CGTalk - Newbie question

Hi all, I have been trying to deselect certain items(edges/vertices) while in component mode without losing my selection but i cant seem to figure it out, basically i am selecting a loop and then trying to remove a selection at the base.

try holding the control button down when dragging, it'll deselect anything you have selected.
