I have been using Cinema 4D for now over 3 1/2 years and never understood this:
I know the ways to get around it but would mainly like to know how to handle this.

The pics should explain it all. This problem is quite frustrating when low-poly game modeling. I frequently find myself having to either cut the entire model in half, then mirroring, then welding or I have to delete sections of polygons just to recreate them. The third pic explains why the four sided poly's are split the way they do and its because when triangled the triangles don't work symmetrically. BUT WHY!!! Why can't the freakin Triangle function work symmetrically to the Y axis? Is there some sort of plugin that can automatically fix this or do I have to settle with this annoying limitation in C4D?

I've also noticed this problem in LW but atleast LW makes the triangles Symmetrical so I don't get odd sided models.

Here is the problem seen in an model I created and as you can see, the entire model has polygonal issues.:thumbsdow

Notice how on the back of the creature where it should be symmetrical I get non-symmetrical triangulating, if thats a word

This is that model BTW;) But the entire object throughout has the problems and in pic 4 you can see how all the way up to the neck its badly un-symetrical all over everywhere in the model.

SpinPoly 2.0 will let you change the axis of division.

Hm, $8 isn't a bad price at all and is worth that price but I'm so broke at the moment:banghead:

But its good to here that there is hope for this problem and I'll probably make it my first C4D investment.

hmm how can it be your first investment if you have been using it for 3 years?

maybe your next would be best.

Spinpoly is fine, nevertheless this effect is really strange.
Astonishing, that I didnīt recognize until now.
Should be reported to Maxon, I think.

try SwapDiagonals by Takuya Imamura. its a free
download. click the both polygons, run the plugin
and you are through, hopefully :)

here the plugin:

Bah, I didn't say it that way. I use Cinema 4D at my multimedia school and I own it at home. I meant it was my first investment TOWARD Cinema as I have simply only been using free plugins and have never bought a plugin before. See I stated it as "My first C4D investement" if you read correctly. ;)

Stab in the dark here but try de activating snap settings, zeroing your object axis and on the model as well then whack your model in half, chuck in Sym object and see if the mesh is then ok :hmm:...dont know if it will work or not.

"Should be reported to Maxon, I think."

It's not a bug. Seems to me this is just the way polys are created. As I understand it all polygon meshes are made up of tris, some or all of which are joined up to become quads. All the tris have to "point" in one direction or another so whichever way they point, you'll get this effect on two of the four corners of the shape.

"That's just the way it is" - Bruce Hornsby And The Range.

The best bet is to do half the object and use a symmetry on it. I might be completely wrong though.
