View Full Version : thinking of converting from lightwave to maya
thiaml 05-09-2003, 11:52 PM i am a lightwave artist based in melbourne, australia. is there any maya artist who lives in melbourne tell me how many studios uses maya for production. the reason i'm asking is there is a lack of studios using lightwave and for that reason i am thinking of switching to an app that is more widely used (maya/max)
i have tried to learn maya a while back and given up on it because of it's complexity. can i ask anyone who has successfully switched across for any tips and advice on making the transition.

I made the switch from LW, but I mainly come from a MAX background. Because of that I found it a very smooth transition. Maya just makes sense... You can do it :)

can i ask why you would switch from max to maya. from where i'm from, melbourne, australia, max is so widely used even the biggest production house uses it (iloura) which i find quite surprising.
can i ask what's the differences between maya and max. i know most game studios uses max and maya for broadcast and film.

I'm in the gaming industry myself, and use Max at work. I learned 3D on Max. I own LW and Maya for home use, and no longer use my copy of LW, due to getting Maya...
Mainly, Maya works with nodes, while Max doesn't. Everything in Maya is a node, pretty much. Other than that, the differences are mostly in the way the programs are organized, and provide different tools to accomplish many of the same tasks... I'm sure if you search the forums you can find this topic discussed in depth...
