Welcome back to CG Society, Saber!

Can't tell you anything specific about tornadoes, sorry it is a kind of subject I never tried, but I'm a great fan of the 'reference is good' school of thought, so, in my opinion, you are on the right track: paint a subject you like and study it throughly one aspect at a time.

...at some point you'll likely feel more or less sick at the thought of painting one more tornado pic, don't give in to the feeling, that's when you are on th cusp, just before things start to fall in the right place (boy, don't I know!).
