Just to say that is incredible honor to be in such company.
I did get the award (architectural still) - but I wish I could've been present in Copenhagen to meet all these fantastic and talented people. THAT'S what makes this art really alive. So much enthusiasm and talent!!

Rock on everybody!!!

(well I guess they did get to see my blurry face on the screen :) Well anyway - it's friday nite here in Los Angeles and I think I'm going to get myself 12-packs in multiplies. Now who's gonna drive me home?

hum.... this is so elitist ....

im only saying that because of this (extracted from the web) :
"The International 3D Awards is the largest independent, global awards for the 3D industry."

independent.... :thumbsdow dont c that...

thought that this awards (student !!!)
were for everyone see what place u can get... globally...

i mean, in 2003 "Bay Raitt" gets #1 and im number #xxx....

so frustrating.... :annoyed:

Im wondering if exists a worldwide 3D Award where everyone
who can participate and gets a place, like im the #53 in the
world - voted by a group (not a person) of the related industry.

just MHO... love all the nominee´s - but thought this was
a competition (and feedback of your work) for everyone...

Haha. My goodness, you so don't get it.
We're an independent award in that we are a non-profit organisation owned and run by the committee, which is made up of 3D professionals worldwide. i.e., we're not owned by any organisation, event or company. The awards is completely run by industry people.

As for being elitist, isn't that the point of having an awards? We're celebrating the achievements and the best 3D for the year. That's the whole point.

second place winner is the first loser maximus ;)

the point of having awards is to award the best , not to award #1567'th winner. I dont see the "elitism" in that , if anything it should push everyone to work harder and do better stuff for the next one.

Thanks to whoever posted that link to TIM TOM! I'd never seen or heard of it before...just got done watching it. That is SO GREAT!...so different and creative. Love the references to and tone of nostalgic early animation. Soundtrack fits great too. Kinda has a Pixar short film quality to it, but with a quirky twist.

Anyone have any more info on who made it, and the making of it? Looks like it's a French site...you can say what you will about those wacky French (oh nooo...! :p ), but they're always coming up with amazing art.

Anyway, if you couldn't tell...I highly recommend watching it! CONGRATS TO TIM TOM!!!

Now...where's images/movies of all those other winners and nominees? :) There'll be no hangovers...or sleeping....allowed until the masses wishes are fulfilled!!!! :D

Proton and I didn't go to bed because we had to leave at five in the morning (ha! Sleep is for show newbies!) but we still left the hotel late because we were in slow motion mode where it takes five minutes to put on each shoe. So we took a cab to the airport and asked the guy to go fast - he drove most of the way at 220 kmh (over 136 mph)! Proton should have got home around 4 AM this morning, but I am somewhat concerned for his safety - he still had a 45-minute drive once he reached San Antonio...

The awards rocked for sure! First getting fed and boozed up and then getting showed the coolest and prettiest art 3D has to effer was just blisfull. Of course everyone awaited the grand finale of the the movie VFX. But I cheered a bit extra when Blizzard won for best cinematic :D!

The awards were very fun to watch and the best winner comment of the evening must have been Jason Schleifers when WETA Digital won the award for best motion picture VFX. Not sure if its a total quote but something like it.

"Man this is so cool. My nipples are getting hard"

See you all next year!!!

The International 3D Awards is a fantastic opportunity for us all (professionals and students) to see the best work being produced around the world by our friends and collegues.

Congrats to everyone who was nominted and won. Brilliant work all around. Sorry I wasn't there to drink you all under the table myself. But I had to work on next year's entry.

Cheers, Markus

Nisus -
I just checked out your site -- even though you did not win in the Architectural Viz Animation category... your team's work is really great!!

Since I'm with Discreet - (we make 3ds max...) I have to ask.. what 3D animation package you use??

We're seeing a big increase here in the US with Architectural houses using Autodesk VIZ and starting to move to 3ds max when they want extra animation & bipeds (character studio).

Is the case the same there in Europe?

Congratulations on your nomination and excellent work!!

Hey KevG! Welcome aboard!

Noticed you're a discreet PR man. Perhaps you can do your 'PR Magic' and head into the 3ds max forum and clear the 'beta testing max 6' (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64650) rumour thread floating around.

Thanks man! And welcome again. The beer is in the fridge and the nuts are all over CgT;)

Hi KevG,

Tnx for your kind words about our work ,-)
(Did you find the english version of our site?)

About the software... Don't be surprised: we still use good old 3dsmax3.1 without any commercial plugins for all our projects. (We do have a lot of self-written scripts of course to speed up things)
In our opinion, the tools are not that important as a 500$ pencil won't make better drawings than a 1$ pencil... (blah blah)

I don't think architectural visualisers need much of the biped options. (Yet? we will see). But I understand the move from VIZ to max. Of course VIZ is not going to be updated...

Personally I've never been fond of VIZ because it didn't supply video post and a bunch of other useful tools that max has. (Sub-object animation? right?)
I've never understood the idea of a skimmed/stripped version as the most important tools were not available... (Budget? Not even budget as you pay hard for the missing tools)

Imho the only reason why VIZ was better than max is because VIZ4 had an advanced lighting system, but as max5 has the same there is no use for VIZ4 of course... But can one use it in an advanced workflow? Not yet (IMHO!).

Although not that great in image quality the lighting scripts that I've wrote do compete GI for most jobs as SPEED is very important.
In fact, I don't know ANY GI-renderer that can illuminate a scene in less than 30min with all testing! Scripts will do the job very smoothly... ;-)

There is ONE extremely great tool in VIZ that I would like to see adopted in max of course: applyoffset() !
This remarkable command is extremely important for architectural modelling scripts that it's a big shame it's still not in MAX! I wonder why...

To find out more about architectural visualisation (and my visions), I strongly recommend you visit the forums at cgarchitect.com.
Be sure to say hi as I moderate a few forums up there ,-)

Hello all -

I just had a look at the rumours thread for 3ds max 6 going into BETA ?? It's an impressive wish list and some nice speculations.

Until we have any thing substantial to say... the silver duct tape is firmly over my mouth and wrapped around my fingers.

There was a surplurs of the stuff after the biological warfare scare died down.

As we all know, and must abide by-- Discreet doesn't mention or announce any products "until it's time" ...and I honestly don't know when BETA testing for the 'next big thing' is begining. Only the BETA testers will know, and then, I think they have to sign a confidentiality agreement not to blab.

In the meantime, though, I hope the 3ds max user base is looking at the subscription model and the latest release with Particle Flow.

If you've seen X2 - X-men United, Particle Flow was used (in BETA) on the scene in the Xjet - when they were looking at the holographic projection of the blueprints for the underground dam.

Actually, 3ds max is getting a big up-surge of use for visual effects in film, and architectural firms for Design Visualization.
(a 3ds max artist used 3ds max to create the 3D artwork overlays for next season's Burton Snowboards... it's wicked nice! -- due to be unveiled in July, 2003) I'm working to get pictures, and will share!!

Anyway... we can only provide more information on the next version when we have all the info and data.
When will that be? Stay tuned...

For those that didn't make it to Denmark and asked about getting a glimpse of my film "Eternal Gaze"... good news! I finally got my act together .. and with the generosity of Leonard Teo and CGNetworks hosting, the theatrical trailer for "Eternal Gaze" is finally up on my website.

http://www.eternalgaze.com/coverImage_2_small.jpg

This will be a teaser to an upcoming interview article on CGNetworks.com about the making of this film and also to the Siggraph2003 Electronic Theater where it will be premiering to the CG community in North America for the first time. It's my pleasure to finally have something to share on this most excellent website... as I've been kinda silently browsing for months. Thanks y'all for such excellent threads and posts!

Enjoy!!
