i'm a frequent visitor and this is my first posting here.

based on the comics Black Widow writen by D. Grayson and illustrated by the amazing J.G. Jones. specifically recreating the cover of issue #1. there's a graphic novel containing all issues if you wanna check it out from your local comics store. quite a good read and the art is just awesome.

all pieces rendered in Brazil and composited in Combustion2. overall, i tried to capture the comics style of the image and the chaos of war depicted in the cover.

hope you enjoy the pic.

cheers,
Rom

Great movie poster!

There something about a girl in tight leather firing an automatic weapon... :p

I just saw this over at the max webboard. I didn't read the text at first and didn't understand why you posted a painting. Then I realized it was cg :)

Great work! How long did the entire thing take you?

discounting the distractions in between, probably about a month. compositing in Combustion2 really sped up things. using the Discreet Color Corrector operator is a godsend. i couldn't have created this image without this tool. check it out if you get a chance.

Nice handling of light and the leather, but i don't like the red hair. Looks like it's thinning and blow-dryer damaged :)

I would try making it thicker and softer... but maybe you want that 'i just fired an automatic weapon' look.

well, the hair was the most challenging part. i used shag and if you've used shag it's like trying to wrestle a tiger. its very hard to control especially trying to do long hair. when Shave is out, i'll check that out and see if its better. hair is on the list to fix on this image when i get a chance.

as they say, nothing is really final. you can always make it better and better.

Nice! Nothing to criticise, as above.

But, i noticed two things: The shells, or whatever this is, the girl has wrapped around her arm, look exactly like those strange potions from Blade I, which blade threw at the vamps to make the burst into pieces.

And: the weapon the other girl's firing looks to me like a HK G36, but ive never seen a version of it with a grenade launcher attached, or is it out and i just missed it?

Would be interested to know. Regards, heipei

Yeah it is a bit of a jerk to work with. It looks like you got curlyness set on. Maybe set that to the straight line in Shag hair. And are you using overall or individual faces thickness settings? Try overall and up it a bit. You can also work with tapering of the strands, make them start off thicker.

heipei, both BLADE and The BLACK WIDOW are Marvel Characters, with the Black Widow being a bit older...it's safe to assume that the artists borrowed from one book to the other which would explain the similarity between Widow's sting charges and Blade's elixir. It helps if you know the characters a little....

Considering how close this is to the actual cover (I have it in my house somewhere) I can accept certain necessary evils like 3d hair that looks cg and weapons that may not be real but stay true to the designs in the comic.

From a strictly artistic standing, I wish Marvel would give the original Widow (the red head) the alternate Widow's hair style. It suits espionage better to wear short hair I think. Nothing would suck more than getting into a close quarters fight and have your opponent use the length of your hair against you. That's the trouble with capes too...

i never connected the two but you're right :)

and yup, its the HK G36 with a borrowed grenade launcher from an M4 type rifle. i was currently doing the G36 then as an exercise for low poly modeling so i just used it to save time.

Wow, The background looks totally like a 2d painting, doesn't look 3d at all, amazing! how much is done with shaders and how much with compositing? can we see wires? also, can we see a grey shaded render? ;)

unfortunately, there's no scene that contains all elements so its kinda hard to do a wire or grey shaded render that shows all. sorry about that. anyway, i attached a wire of the black widow character below. the base background is a sky generated from Dreamscape (a plugin for Max). the billowing smoke are particles systems shaded by Afterburn. Each object were lit, materials assigned and rendered separately and then composited in Combustion*2. i used the Discreet Color Corrector operator on almost everything to make the scene cohesive and have a consistent color palette. w/o it, i wouldn't have been able to create this image.

Ahh, awesome compositing job then... and wow, great knowledge and use of such a wide variety of apps and plugins! :applause:

As a crit, imho I think that everything works together extremely well, except for the shading on the head of the front female character, (despite the compositing, it looks slightly like a blinn shader with a bit of self-illumination/ambient-color or something? or it could just be the highlights that is throwing it off?) but that's the only 3d-ish looking part of the image... everything else is done perfectly ;) I love the way you handled the highlights on the leather, looks so handdrawn too!

(also, thnx for ur compliments, romi ;))
