View Full Version : Character : The Last Blade Crusader
dominicqwek 05-09-2003, 06:04 PM Hi guys, i've been working on this character for some time and i've decided to post it up. Im not done with it yet, as you can see from the title "The Last Blade Crusader", something crucial is missing, that is , the blade of course... :)
At the same time, im working on some textures. Will post an update as soon as possible!

Ok here's a smooth version as requested. I'm more or less done with the rig, except facial expressions. Currently looking into textures and lighting style. Keep the comments coming! Tks.

like what you did with vert #2388 ,but could make the pants look more like pants.
ad more stuff eg (quiver , dagger , {the sword you mentioned} , some hair , veins on hands and neck )
alltogether your busy with a nice charackter just a pitty that it looks like the barbarian from "blade of glory"

teckniel- tks for the comments!
DarkVark-the navel and nipples will be texture mapped. Yeah i know what u mean..the pants look fluffy, i guess its a design flaw? i like it that way :)
yes i do agree vert #2388 look more like pants, what about vert #5379? :D
you know what? I prefer the low poly to the smoothed.
Great posing. Keep it up!

Great stuff dom! I really like those boots. I have to agree with M@ about the lowpoly version...I think it stands up by itself as a wonderful peice of art...wire frame and all...I really like the chukyness of that first picture. Nice character and pose dom..You have plans to texture him?

fetus23 - yes i do plan to texture him. in fact im in the midst of doing that. Hey, i love the piece u submitted for the LOTR challenge, wonderful textures. Are you in for the next one?
Maximus Groff - Yeah the boots look simple.Who did those concept art? They look very unreal ( as in unreal the game) I wouldnt dare to rig those man, it'll kill me! :scream:

Maximus Groff: Great idea to send him spinefinger's concept art of his boots, I think if you run with the Bishop style it will add some nice contrast to the clothing, and Yes those pants do loook a bit Fluffy. And what this guy has like a .4% body fat!!!!! Nice job!!!!

koinu- would love to model those boots. Wonderful concepts, i'll try them for next model perhaps..

Is your textures part of a bundle texture cd (3d total) ?
How is your workflow ?
koinu
05-11-2003, 10:06 PM
dom, I am having a problem with the neck muscles, they shouldn't be that pronounced. lift your arms up and see for your self. Looking good other than that

S_3D_A- tks for the comments!
Maximus Groff - can i call u max or something? you nick is awfully long! (haha just kidding) Im not sure whether they're from 3dtotal textures.. basically the textures i used are dled from the net, as they're free, they dont come with bump maps and the resolution isnt high enough, resulting in too much tiling.
I've seen some of the tuts at 3dtotal. i Must say the tex cd is well worth the money.
What workflow are u talking about? At the moment i'm still working on the textures. In between i'd switch to modelling. The sword's done, once its texture is up i'll post an update.
koinu- tks for the comments. I wanted an exaggeration in my characters. Its pretty much a design flaw cos i realised halfway thru modeling that my char was neither realistic nor exaggerated.
KWAK- Tks a lot m8.

05-12-2003, 09:11 AM
Hey this is really going well. Looking good
Personally I think the mesh has more impact than the smoothed version... maybe its the muscles has more defination. After textures, it tends to look abit 'gammish' ..or maybe its just me.
Anyway keep up the good work!
koinu
05-12-2003, 10:27 AM
N/P dom, exaggeration will draw an audience into the character, like Jerry from Pixar's Jerry's game... And PLEASE don't use ready made textures, develope your texturing skillz...PLEASE... otay. dom...... keep it up...

polymorph-tks for the comments!
plasticbag- hmmm..lol..seems like more ppl prefer to unsmoothened version. haha.. Tks for the comments.:D
koinu- tks for the advice, well none of the textures are used fresh from the oven, all of them were heavily treated, mixed and match in pshop till im satisfied with them. :D
great so far.. really like the tex on the rusted plated armor there! cool! using layered shader?
dominicqwek
05-12-2003, 06:06 PM
zvan- nope. no layered shader ( or rather composite mat cos i use max) the texture maps were done in pshop. glad u like it! :D
argh..i'll give an update..swear..work work...

skin seems a bit too shiny, the rest of the model is textured as though it is dirty, and he obviouslt hasnt shaved for a few days so it would probably be a good idea to make the skin less shiny and add some more dirt to the skin texture
dominicqwek
05-13-2003, 06:54 PM
lordrych- ok tks for the comments. i'll go fix them air pants :)

Dude, I think the pants is going to be a pain in the butt. Maybe you should try Simcloth. I think its the weakest part of the entire model. But good texturing on the model.
Anyway good to know another SAC fella here.
dominicqwek
05-14-2003, 05:17 AM
teckniel- tks for the comments dude.
hand-im trying simcloth3 now, do u know whether i can stack the sc modifiers. so that they can have diff properties(cloth followed by deflector), doesnt make cow sense, so far very bad results.
THeres still too few sac guys here :surprised
pencil-head
05-14-2003, 06:57 AM
i agree with the other guys. the pants need some wrinkles in them. and the skin is a little on the shinny side. put some scares or a tottoo or somthing to dirty up the skin abit
insanepoly
05-14-2003, 07:26 AM
In Simcloth 3, you are supposed to be able to assign different properties to the same cloth. If you intend to use Simcloth, than you have to model the thighs and butt underneath the cloth so that there's something for the cloth to react against.

Blood would be awesome, maybe put him in a more dynamic pose. Maybe holding the sword tward us, or mid swing? Well done the only crit i have is his neck looks like he has lot of stretching there.

fetus23 - tks dude. im getting lazy..haha...i dont think there'll be a background for this guy, im already starting on another model. BUT i WILL add some blood. :D
I dunno abt the bg..we'll see. Tks for the kind comments!
Lordrych - yes blood there will be. I tried a couple of poses..the one u mentioned posed a lot of problems for me.. i was spending way too much time righting the wrongs n i decided to just settle with this pose. the neck was modelled that way..i wanted exaggerated mastoids..guess it ended up a rigging nightmare.
blindsleeper - ok will add some dents to the sword.
MadS - search for hiko here at cgtalk..he's a cg artist who has excellent modelling skills.
S_3D_A - hahaa..now it looks like an FF char?! haha. Tks dude. :D
Mahlikus - tks for the kind comments!
I dont think its healthy to linger on a model for too long you know what i mean? I've been working on this guy for a couple of months in the evenings. Time to move on!

Here's the sword with blood. Did a quick procedural composite texture for it. I dont think it really works..but what the heck.
http://www.dominicqwek.com/images/pose3_nightlite2.jpg
I like this model quite a lot, its got a nice style to it, and the textures hold up really nicely.
The weakest aspect of it is probably, as been stated before, are the boots.
I think the complexity level matches the level of the model, its just that they appear clumsy, and lack any real dynamic shape.
I realize its past the point to do anything about them, but something you might try in the future, if you find you like the shapes of your un-smoothed version vs your sub-d models, try taking some of the edges and just adding a quick bevel, or duplicate the lines surrounding the edge. It goes a long way to preserve the interesting look that poly's will give you. This especially applies to hardbody objects, ie the boots and will help reduce the cartoony look that often happends with Sub-d's.
Great work, its quite nice.

Excellent! Like the pose and like i said earlier impressive texture work. If you dont mind I would like to see the maps you used for say his shoulder pads, would be cool to learn something from your bump and specular maps.
Heard some interesting points about the footwear; If they are like sabatons (somewhat like armor spats that lay atop a leather moccassin) why not try flattening the height a bit or let some of the undershoe show at the bottom by removing the non-segmented middle panel. Still looks great though. :buttrock:

danb - hey man. anything can be changed if needed. I see your point there. Actually i wanted them to look heavy, but i guess things got lost somewhere during the modelling. I'll look at remodelling them. Love your demoreel ..totally dig your stuff. Hope to see more of your stuff here
threedemer - ahh. its the mad cg artist bent on creating an entire world of cg characters! I've attached what you've requested, no worries. i'll flatten the shoes..but having them look like sabatons would take more time:surprised
