CGTalk - texturing a bird

hi,does anyone know how to accomplish the feather effect from "for the birds"? I know it was geometry but I'd like to have something similar just using color and bump.It won't be the same,I know! but i'd like to be as close as possible!
anyone with expirience with birds and feathers?

well the problem with using a just a color and bump is that when you get close the bird... it becomes evident that those feathers are fake... this is even more accentuated if that bird ever opens its wings.

I beleive someone in the lightwave forum created a bird with actual geometry. you might want to do a search. Also, get some reference for bird feathers and the overall texture.
