Would it be diffucult to write a script that relaxes/smooths subd UVs? I've programed a little bit before but never in mel. I take it it's not as simple as grabbing the poly relax script and chaning references to poly UVs to subD Uvs?

convert the subd to poly and smooth the UV and copy the uv to subd (u need a smooth poly UV script or maya 5) ok its a wa but it works :)

I could do that but then I couldn't UV map for the higher tessellation levels the resulting uv map would be stretched in odd areas which I couldn't control from the base mesh.

yes u are right but if u go for a very high with the smooth poly UV the stretching is very low in the subd - i think it not perfect and a subd smooth UV script was the best thing but i think this was not so easy :)
