Title: Vulcan
Name: Caleb Ashmore
Country: Canada
Software: Maya, ZBrush

This is a copy of Guillaume Coustou's "vulcan". I know its not perfect, but I'm going to consider it finished for now. there will always be endless tweaking but its time to move onto a new idea :)
However I'm definitely open to any critique.

Cheers

Great work! The only two things I don't like so much are his nose (I think the bridge of the nose should be a little higher and wider) and I don't see the detail of the iris and pupil in the eyes. Without those the eyes look empty IMO. Also, in the original his right foot rests on the ground, but in yours you left out that part so he's just dangling his feet from the pedestal. I think that adding that ground piece would help anchor him. But you did a great job with all the other details!

thanks for the replys guys. And thank you for the critiques on the face. I agree about the nose, thanks for bringing that to my attention. i always seem to gimp up noses, lol.

as for wires. I made a human base mesh that i re-use for my sculptures. its low rez enough that theres definitely no similarities between my sculptures. the topology isnt perfect, but i like it because it subdivides to 5.8 million polies which is the highest my computer can handle before blowing up.

Caleb this is incredible, i know you and your perfectionist self but to the rest of us this image is pretty perfect. Most of the images you show me are still WIP or simple sculpts that pretty much display modeling. This is one of the rare images of yours ive seen where you add an atmosphere around your model and let me tell you it doubles the impact and appeal easily.
with dynamic lighting & a simple yet effective background with a great sense of composition.

This is a whole new level for your work and I never want to see any of your work without this level of finish ever again.
this is nuts!

definately deserves front page, congrats.

Well, another sculpture from Louvre, as I wrote in thread Corneille's Polyphemus some time ago I must "hardly" criticise anatomy, because thi peace is only about anatomy and demonstration of modeling skills. The most problematic areas are shoulders, forearms, knees and part where which connect pectoral, deltoids and biceps, this error is on his left hand. I didnīt want to draw on your pictures, so my critics is only verbal. I am a bit surprised that lots of people just neglect all these mistakes in anatomy.

Anyway, this is nice model and sculpt, but in my opinion not on frontpage.
Only my two cents:)

Hope I didnīt sound harsh or rude, wish you best luck and keep it up:)

Anyway, this is nice model and sculpt, but in my opinion not on frontpage. One would think that now that you are no longer "overlooked" as an artist, you would allow other artists to pass your rigorous judgment to be allowed on the frontpage ;) - that said, of course we know that only your works deserve the spotlight, whilst, even some of the mods debated about whether it should have received it. ;)

It's amazing how an artist's attitude can color peoples' outlook on their work, and similarly, their votes regarding CGChoice.

Critique is one thing, and of course is accepted, but there is a line where it becomes obvious that 'someone' has a problem only because they aren't receiving their 'due' recognition. Just food for thought.

/discussion for me

Claybub, you're most welcome. I hope you make improvements and continue to kick all of our asses. :)

Rebeccak- I only wrote my critics about his anatomy, nothing more, nothing less, only my two cents, final opinion is on every artist here. I donīt know why you make a demon from me, or evil monster, this forum is for opinions of every artist, if you want to say, that these threads are only for positive comments, please write it to rules thread and i donīt write anything.

Well, about my frontpage of Batman, if you want to say, that you or some of your friends put my image on the fronpage only for silencing me, because I wrote critics to Polyphemus sculpt with other users here and then criticise moderators for frontpage images and cgawards politics, please donīt do it again, beacuse this is really strange behavior from you and moderators. I have whole private messages between us, and exactly know what I writo, I didnīt wrote anything about my frontpages, i only criticise moderators.

No surprise if I will receive a ban or if I will not get frontpage anymore, and why? because i criticise two pictures (I am on cgtalk almost three years, and criticised maybe only three images, Polyphemus and Vulcan in last two weeks), thanks for your unfair behavior Rebeccak, because you know what I wrote you in private messages, If everybody could see our corespondation, nobody wouldnīt turst you, that I am an envious overlooked artist, thanks for that, because I canīt show our private messages.

Could I get your permission to show our private messgages, so everybody can see, that I am not as bad as you wrote?

Here are my 2 super secret pm's to you:

No worries, just think next time of the artist's feelings.

Cheers,

No problem, no doubt not everyone agrees on what should and should not be posted, but were you to have your work fp'd and then derided as "not worthy", even if you are directing your critique to the admins, it's going to make the artist feel like crap. Just food for thought, however, I understand your feelings.

Nice work. The only thing that stuck out to me really was the left shoulder(his left), it feels a bit flat to me. I may be way off base there as i'm no anatomy expert. I really like the lighting, mind giving us a breakdown of your light setup? Congrats on the frontpage.

Rod Seffen
04-03-2008, 11:56 PM
It's not your best work. The hands and feet are well observed, but the head is pretty badly constructed. The nose, eyes, ears and hair are all below par and don't do the original justice.
Also, the shader doesn't work as either marble, clay, stone, or skin, but just CG-ish plastic ,and the lighting does hold up wither, with that burn-out on his side and the general flatness of the shaded areas.
I wondered why you didn't do a render of the horse and rider model you made a while back and show that, because it's much better work than this copy.

Beyond anatomy, what I really like about this piece is the emotive, evocative quality the lighting adds and the overall passion that I can sense in claybub's work more so than in many other CG pieces that I see here.

To convey a sense of passion via 3D sculpting is a skill I don't think many modeler's possess. However having followed claybub's work for a while I can see that emotive quality in almost every single piece. There's very little CG art to which I have an emotional response, and claybub's work is an exception. There is more to CG than technical skill, as there is more to art than technical ability. When an artist lends something of themselves to their work successfully while also demonstrating technical ability, I think that work is well worth rewarding. :)

In other words, just because something is realistic, doesn't mean it's artistic in the eyes of some beholders. And of course, ALL art is subjective, so we're of course all entitled to our opinions. :)

Beyond that, it certainly stands out from your average fairy / spider pr0n we unfortunately see here so often. ;)

Come on Rebecca, this is a copy, not an original, so he cannot get the credit for any emotion or passion the pose coveys, that's just an inevitable result of doing a reasonably accurate copy.

It does, but I'd like to see more orginal digital sculptures in the classical style, rather than all these average copies.
You may try to pull me up on the fact that I've done two copies myself, but they were both for workshops here on CG Talk, not though personal choice.

Hehe, this is bizarre, when I first saw it, and still looking at it now...it looks like David Dixon from the 1981 The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy TV series. But it probably doesn’t look like David Dixon if we were to go into it in more depth...probably got a completely different nose….but the eyes and mouth are uncanny.

Nice lighting and colour, and of course, extremely good modelling.

Dude mMUCH GRATER ARTIST than u or any of us here HAVE DONE copys in the past for years (i would like to se ur hands in marble or something :)
I have posted a critique on ur Vermeer Painting in general it is a good model but it dosent have to do nothing with Vermeer and it is like Rebeccak said a good program knowledge but very bad perception u didnt said a word and on that reproduction i found TONS of mistakes if u want i can upload it to u (u said u practised perception but u have like 60 crucial mistakes) like i said i can upload it to u if u want
So leave alone Rebeccak and Claybub

Claybub grate work keep it up man and sorry but i had to say something to that ppl

Stop being so childish.
Copies are useful as learning exercises, but they do not add anything to the sum total of art in the world, even when they are masterful copies, and certainly not any digital copy I've ever seen (including my own).
However, I would draw a distinction between reproducing a marble sculpture in a digital version, which is basically a direct 1:1 cloning, and transcribing a painting to a 3d scene. The latter requires a lot more interpretation and a lot more input on the part of the 3d artist, and does constitute a new work rather than a direct clone, since the mediums are so completely different.
Yes, my works have mistakes, so does yours, so does Michaelangelo's. Everyone's does. That doesn't mean we should all keep silent and not strive to improve things.
It's easier to see flaws in the work of others than in your own, and that's the fundamental purpose of criticism, and I welcome anyone critiquing my works when I show them.

Hello Caleb. This is the french tracking guy from Quebec! (Sanctuary)

Glad to see that one of your work is getting that attention. It is super. Expecially the hands and feet. I do agree with the critisms about the shoulders and the head, not being well construct. But as you said, its time to move on to the next subject and improve. It's still way better than I can do.

I agree with the non-accuracy of the shader and the light, and I love it. It makes it looks more like a painting than an actual modeling. It is flat, but that gives it a great soft mood. I like it a lot. Keep on the good work!!!

If you have some constructive advice to give.. why don't you enlighten us?

If the head is badly constructed... in what way and how could it be better?

If the nose, eyes, ears and hair are all below par... how could they be changed to be better?

I'm not even disagreeing with your opinion... just on how you state them with no advice to go along with them. With out that.. it just comes out as bashing, so what's the point? Just to tear down the person and their work?

These are the types of comments of why for every person who does post their work here at CGTALK, there are probably 100 people who never will. It's not all about praise... we all can and want to improve and want constructive critisim. The key word their being "constructive".

That's beautiful. Simply beautiful. I was hoping it was your original piece though. But I realize there is much to be learned through the process of replication as well.

This piece made me think that much contemporary 3D art really deserves to be put on the same pedestal that we put classical art on. So many people tend to focus on the technical aspects of CG that sometimes the artistic element takes a back seat. But when someone becomes a true master of their medium, viewers will see their piece for the art, and not think about how it was technically accomplished. This piece had me focused on the artistic aspect, until I read that it was a copy of an existing work, at which point it felt more like a technical achievement to me.
