View Full Version : New model ... advice needed
modernhorse 05-09-2003, 02:52 PM Hello group -
Behold my first character model (WIP). I'm looking for advice in the following ....
http://www.geocities.com/modernhorse/Models.html
1) Is it too patch heavy? Should I scrap and start again?
2) What problems do you see ahead for me as I wish to animate this character, eventually.
Thanks for any advice.
Cheers!

Hi Doug,
could you post a drawing (don't worry about quality) as it's hard to advise without an idea what the rest of the character would look like and what he/she/it is going to do - speak, blink etc. etc.
I could say looks VERY patch heavy if the face isn't going to do much but then if your eventual aim is speaking etc I haven't helped you if you remove essential patches after my "advice".
Is there a reason the surface is so bumpy?

Thanks for taking the time. Here's a link to the sketches (its all crap I can't draw at all).
As far as speaking - no, he'll be mute. The surface is bumpy because i don't know what I'm doing. And I haven't spent too awfully long smoothing it all out as I got thinking that it was too patch heavy. Cheers!

your sketches link doesn't work but I got there from the original link (you've added a link on that page)
I'm truly sorry to read your comments both on this page and on your site- if you think I came across harsh then I apologise! I can see you are VERY self-deprecating.
How about we work on a model together? I'm away this weekend (catching a choo-choo-train) but would be happy to share any knowledge or modeling techniques if you feel that may help.
You can leave private email using the links below each post. Maybe there should be a co-operative working "sticky thread!"

OK Doug.
let me know what I can do. This thread seems a useful enough place to start.

Doug,
Thought maybe you'd get something out of this tutorial:
http://www.comet-cartoons.com/toons/3ddocs/facialmodeling/modeling.html
It's not A:M specific, but it is spline modelling. If you have just a basic sketch of your character from the front and from the side then you should be able to get results which will be smooth and not to patch heavy. As you can see from the tutorial, you can have as much or as little splinage as necessary. For your character I would think you wouldn't need too much as he'll be a cartoony guy.
Good luck, and keep sharing your work.

It's a little easier to ctrit. a model if we can see the splines.
I can't tell how many patches you have and where they are, as it is.
For your first char. model it's pretty good., I mean I could see ti WAS a chartacter, and that's good!

There was an image showing the splines, just below the one without.

Thank you all for the help so far. My suspicions were correct - way too many patches for what I need. I think I'll start on version 4 with a rotoscope of the sketch. And I'll update this thread when i've gotten that far.
I will check out that Comet tutorial too. Thanks for the interest in this newbie stuff. :p
