Tell the way for both NURBS and polygon sphere please.

Before you create it set it in the options....

How about polygon?

create the sphere, select half of the faces, delete them, select one edge on the outside and use the fill hole tool.

Select half the polys then delete....
I thought it had options also but doesnt...

Every NEW NURBS sphere has a shape node (duplicates usually do not) where you can set the sweep of the sphere. (180š would be half.)

For polys, just create a sphere with an even number of spaces along the direction you wish to "cut", and select half the faces and delete. If you have an odd number of faces along the axis you want to cut the poly on, then it won't divide evenly.

So how to select half of the sphere easily? Because there's no Isoparm in ploy.

Look from the top view and marque select which half you wish to delete in poly mode.

For polygons, right-click on the object, choose "face," drag over half the faces, then Edit Polygons>Extract.

(But check your settings before you start working this way: make sure that Polygons>Tool Options>Keep Faces Together is on, and that Separate Extracted Faces is checked at the top of the Extract options box.)

For NURBS, right-click on the object, choose "Isoparm" click the iso you want to cut along, then Edit NURBS>Detach Surfaces.

Being a lurker, I use Rhino to model and am looking at moving to either C4D or Maya mainly for the render engine (Rhino's isn't that good) and in part because of animation. I have downloaded the PLE version and am playing with it, bonus points to Maya for having a working "trial" version. !!

Reading this thread sure makes Maya look much harder to split a sphere than in Rhino. In Rhino, one just creates the sphere, then a cutting plane and use the cutting plane to split the sphere.. there you have it .. two sphere halves.

While I have it out on the chopping block  to be honest .. how does Maya compare to Rhino (or C4D) for "ease" of NURBS modeling or just modeling in general ?

thanks,
bob

Many of the methods posted on this thread are simply for users who want more control for various situations. I don't believe that modeling in Maya would be harder than C4D or Rhino, though I haven't tried Rhino. maya NURBS options are excellent indeed.
It's all a matter of learning the program's workflow (as w/ any software) After that it just comes naturally.
If Maya seems more difficult than the 2 packages you mentioned, I would imagine it's just 'cause of the open-ended flow that's intrinsic to Maya's design.
If yer just doing architectual design then you might not need all this, but if you want character tools or particles that you can devote years to, then maya is certainly a good contender. For the price, I have yet to find a better suite of tools
(& the hell with paying $1600 for C4D XL)
that's my conclusion at this point anyway

Thanks greek_fire. So if I am reading between the lines correctly.. then I have more control over polys and such with Maya than I do in Rhino. :)

I hope none to offense to my question.. I just took Hong Konger's question at face value. oh well, having a blonde moment -- and I am a blonde too. :hmm:
