View Full Version : Fur+Polys+Me= :(
jonnymac 05-09-2003, 11:54 AM So i have a polygon head in Maya and i want to put fur on it.
Whenever i use fur with NURBS everything works ok. When i use it on POLYS wierd stuff happens. Painting attributes goes especially wonky!
Any suggestions are most welcome!

When you use fur on poly's you have to be very careful with your UVs. I would check these first.

sometimes is good look other ways of made the topology of the fur area trying made it almost like a nurbs patch, specialy the back of the head.

Use an invisible NURBS "jacket" underneath your poly structure. That's what I did with a hedgehog character I made... as long as the NURBS surface is completely transparent and matches the poly structure, it looks fine. I just didn't have time for that animation to bother with the hassles of fur on polygons, when NURBS gives you all the control you need.

The only problem with rigging is that you're going to have to paint weights for both the NURBS objects and your poly character. But, it's not really all that difficult. Just make sure similar areas on both structures have similar weighting, and you're golden! :)

unless he uses wrap deformers for the rigging...

But he would still have to include both structures in the appropriate deformers... that's about the same (if not more tedious) than painting weights using a joint skeleton, if I'm not mistaken.
