I’m back for another challenge! I didn’t quite finish the journey begins and I skipped the last couple all together, but I’m determined to finish this time. I've never done a fully finished and polished digital painting, and I figure this is the perfect time to start (and having a deadline means I'll be more likely to finish the piece!). My Idea for the contest is scene with "space hobos" camping around a fire. I thought this would be a good opportunity to show a diverse group with an interesting variety of clothing, gear and foods. I also think the campfire will be a great light source, and provide a centre of interest in the centre of the composition. In the background there will be a space-port with all types of flying ships so it’s clear that this is a futurist scene. I'm still planning out the groupings and expressions on the characters. I'd like keep the scene interesting by telling little stories and insert a few jokes. My main idea for a back story is that they crash landed, and now they have to get to the distant city on foot. Perhaps they’re arguing over who’s fault it is or how they will get there. I’ll post some more detailed sketches of the characters soon. Alexi

Here is the first of the detailed character drawings. The costumes are fairly generic because I’m more interested the gestures and expressions of the characters at this point. I may have them all in the same uniforms to show that they are all from the same crew. (If I go with the idea that they crash landed). Or I may stick to the idea that they are simply a collection of space hobos, sharing some hobo stew. I could throw in some space bindles and space boots with holes in them for added humor. Alexi.

I really like this idea. It seems like a scene at night to me. What are your thoughts on time of day? If they're boozing it up, it might be funny to add in some guy that's sick or something...dazed eyes and a little bit of puke running down his chin. Just a thought.

Here is a rough idea for the city in the background. I wanted it to seem like they where next to a freeway so I added the long line of spaceships flying past the characters. These also help to show the vast scale of the city.

Especially the one with the spaceships in the air. Good dynamic feeling to that. Nice off axis tilt. Looking forward to seeing more.

Here are a couple sketches of the human characters in the group. I'm going to keep them in a cartoony style becasue I think it can be much more expressive. Next I'll combine all of my detailed character drawings into one image and work on the composition. One that is done I can finalize the designs and get painting as soon as possible.

These are wonderful character sketches...imbued with nice lines and a lot of personality. I'm always jealous of prolific sketchers. I would only benefit from doing more pre-vis work, but I feel sort of keenly aware of the deadline this time around, and have had to dive right in (3d entry). Im afraid it will show in my entry.
I look forward to seeing your painting, its off to a great start!

This is a composite of all the character sketches I've done so far. I added a fire with a few pots and various alien food and ingredients. I figured this would be a good opportunity to add some interesting details, and show a mixing of human and alien cultures. I'm doing more sketches for the alien heads in hopes of finding some more unique designs. I'll post those soon.

yap, really nice and clean sketches.
I like this idea. Personally I' keep them as hobos, it just seems like each could have more diverse backstories that way, plus you can play more around with different pallettes instead of one uniform.
How are you planning on telling the story that they want to reach the distant city? I think that just placing it in the background isn't enough, especially since they're all gathering for some chow and seemingly not in much of a rush. Maybe one of them could hold out a thumb or a "looking for ride" sign towards the highway to indicate they are planning on moving on?
Nice stuff, great sketches

Thanks for the feedback, I like the idea of adding a sign so its obvious that they are trying to get to the city. I think I'll go with "space hobo" idea from now on, just so there is more variety with the characters.

Here are a few more sketches of the human character. I tried some designs with him as a grifter, an old captain-like guy, and as a grizzled space marine type. There is a range of cartoony and realistic looking heads, but I think I'll stick with the cartoony style.

These are some costume ideas for the human female character. I'm sticking with the idea that they are all space hobos and drifters, so the designs have to be unique (from eachother)and suggest something about the characters story. I imagine her as a Han Solo type character, so her costume is full of artifacts from her travels but is simple and ready for action.

This is a page of rough alien sketches. I'm thinking of changing the design of two or three of the alien characters (everyone except the mother and kids) to make them less humanoid and more interesting. The guy holding the sign could be inserted behind the characters to help get the idea across that they are trying to get to the city in the background.

Here is a colour sketch of the background (without the characters or background spaceships). The light source in the center will be a camp fire. I used some wood and rock textures to add some detail and hide the sloppy brushstrokes. I’ll get rid of the back outlines in the final image, and I'll paint the star field in the background rather then using a photo reference.

I cleaned up the pen sketches and tweaked the character designs a bit to give them more variety. These are both pencil drawings that I'll combine and revise in photoshop. I've decided to make them all different species, and to keep them in a cartoony (and more comical) style.

I've done some drawings of additional characters that I may try and fit into the painting to help fill in some of the dead space in the composition. I don't want the image to get too busy, but the more varieties of aliens I can include the more interesting the scene will become.

I've finally finished the new character and costume designs. I've decided to focus on showing a diverse group of human and alien species getting together and sharing a meal. The idea is that they are all poor travelers, each giving what small amounts of food they have to create a stew. For a bit of humor, some of the alien characters are having trouble handling human alcohol.

I've put all the character sketches together and placed them on top of my background colour sketch. I'm still not sure about the two characters outside the main group, I may lose them to keep the composition clean and simple. The spaceships in the background are also really rough, but over all I like the way the image is looking. Now I can start adding colour to the characters and get this painting going! (note: I know this image is low-rez, but if you click on my blog link you can see a higher quality version of it.)

I see really strong line work, character expression and interaction. The idea is great, I love it. Once you get the block in of the characters and the fire-lighting, the painting part will really start moving. I'm excited to see your progress! One thing I noticed is the mother on the left edge with her children (mom-dad, hey its an alien). Her form is very vertical and symetrical, which seems a bit stiff compared to the other characters, and changes the flow directing the eye. Unless she gives that change to guide our eye up to the city on the cliff, or become a focal point, I wouldn't mind her looking back into the group a little. Again, I am excited to see it this far with the effort you have put into it, and can't wait to see the finish. Anyone who has camped out, will be drawn into this one!

I've started to fill in the characters by blocking in flat areas of colour. I'll paint in the shadows on a separate grey-scale layer, as well as adding in more textures and detail. Eventually all the black outlines will be painted out of the characters and backgound. The resolution is really bad in this image, so I posted a bigger version on my art blog (see link below)

Here is a rough colour sketch of two of the alien characters. I did a black and white shading layer and multiplied it over a colour fill layer. It gives a general idea of the ligthing (which comes from the camp fire below). I'm going to do a few more characters before I start to tighten up the painting and remove the black outlines.

This is really fun! There are a lot of great characters and interactions going on. I especially like the 2 characters you poseted last, very cool! Compositionally, it's a bit hard to know where to focus on: Everything right now has equal importance and value so the eye wanders all over never really alighting anywhere. I especially feel that the guy in the lower right pulls the eye away from the main part of the image, and pulls you out of the picture. Good luck with the rest of it!

I've made some progress on a few more of the characters. I did a black and white value sketch, over top a flat colour layer. Now that I have them all together with a light source I can start blocking in lighting and shadows. I'm still working on the sketch of the alien family, and I'm going to charge a few of the other characters so it seems like they are looking at each other.

I changed the head of the mother alien character so she is more engaged with the rest of the group (and less symetrical). I'm going to start tighening up the main group next, and adding proper lighting and shadow effects. With only 25 days left in the contest I might have to lose the two outside characters. I may leave some of the ink outlines showing, depending on how fast the painting goes.

Oh lovely scene, it lools so warm and peacefull, wich contrast with the somewhat rough enviroment of a stone cliff, I like that....
I feel the next steps will be really exiting and crucial, right now some areas are alittle off with the lightsource, the guy standing right in front of the fire, by contrast, could look darker and outlined by the light.
The big projected shadows, like the one from the alien rising his finger are a great detail and help a lot for the mood, great work!!:applause:

I enjoy looking at your sketches very much. As for the colorings, may I suggest stronger, warmer and vibrant tones around the fireside and reflected areas. The shadows a cooler shade.
If you ask me, I wouldn't want to have a picnic in that spot. Its too scary and dangerous. What if the child or the baby falls off?!!

Fantastic work. I love your colour choices, they make the picture very balanced. The characters are also fabulous. If you were going for "diverse", I think you have it in spades. Great work.

Here is the latest version of the painting. I've painted out the outlines in the background and made the city a lot darker. I'm going to add lights on the city, as well as space craft flying above the characters. I still have a lot of work to do on the foreground tree roots and the cliff, and I need to work on the lighting a bit more so everything lives in the same space. I'll post some details soon, because you can't see very much in a 150kb image.

Thanks to everyone who has left a comment, here is a detail of the foreground section of the painting. I've adjusted the drunk guy in the bottom corner and painted out more of the pen outlines. I'm still working on the lighting and shadows though, I think there should be some more light and dark contrast.

There's nothing like sitting around the campfire with some good alien friends, haha! Love the concept and the illustration style. Good work.

I've started to paint up the background city. I started with a bunch of city skyline photographs and photo-shopped them into place over my drawing. I'm still painting over these photos so the city fits with the style of the rest of the image. Also, I noticed the cliff and forest next to the city are too bight, so the values will have to be adjusted.

I've made some more progress on the painting, here is a close up of one of the characters. I've still got to tighten up certain areas so the painting looks more uniform.

Here is another detail of the characters. They are about 90 percent finished at this point, and they just need a bit of work to hide the brush strokes and harmonize the lighting.

Excellent piece of work! I hadn't seen this until now.
I really liked your character design and "feel" of the piece, to me it has a real Disney flavour, especially with the humour, character and style.
Awesome.:arteest:

I had some time to work on the side characters, so they are back in the scene. This guy with the sign is just about finished, I just need to tweak the lighting a bit. WIth just four days left I have to add in the space ships and paint some kind of background.

Here a close up of the background I have been working on for the bottom corner of the painting. I wanted something that showed how high up the characters where, but was not distracting from the rest of the scene. I put together a couple mountain photos and painted over them (shifting to night colours and adding the clouds). I also painted in a small city in the valley to emphasize the scale.

I'm just about finished the painting. I added the space traffic in the top left corner, and some texture to the cliffs and rocks. I'll just do some more clean up on the characters and maybe add some wood textures to the trees.

This is the final image i'm going to submit for the contest. It could use a little bit more work but time is up (and I'm at that point where I'm sick of the painting). Thanks to everyone who left comments on my thread, I got a lot of helpful suggestions.

Whoops. .this image is a repeat post, but I forgot to enter it as the "final post" milestone. My basic idea was to show a group "space hobos" gathered around a fire, sharing whatever foods they had to create a feast of stew and cheap whine. The characters have set up next to a freeway-style lane of spacecraft, in hopes of catching a ride into the city in the distant background. I tried to show some humorous situations and lots of interaction between the human and alien characters. I wanted to keep the painting in a cartoony style, so I used simplified character designs and bight, saturated colours. The image was painting in photoshop, with a bit of photo reference for the background city and forest.

O wow! Lots of interacting going on here. Good job. I always like paintings with emotion and story. The cast shadow on one of the blue guys has a lot of cinematic life. Looks like this image came straight out of an animation. Good job again!
