hello Guys... I'm happy to participate this challenge, i haven't participate to cgchallenge for a while...I feel rusty :D

We are a duo for this challenge. Me and Sparkee, a friend of mine wich will handle the drawings/concept arts and the characters creation in 3d . I will handle the environnements,objects,etc... and later the animation and compositing.

So here's some infos about our project :


Uplift Challenge - Nicolas Dehaut (Goul) and Steve Vanhees (Sparkee) participation

"The Meeting"

A cg short-film


Well, first, it will be a little short movie (around 2min long) wich will show the first interaction between some friendly Aliens and the human race...

This have been done a lot of time in the cinema history, sometimes it's turns bad an aliens brun the whole planet, eating babies,etc...and sometimes it turns good, and everybody shaking hands, and give hopes and friendly messages around a cup of coffee.. ;-)
Theses kind of scenarios are often based on the Aliens behaviors, we want to make the opposite : focus on the human behavior in this kind of situation.

Our alien will be sympathic and friendly, but the human ambassador will be a jerky-joker-stupid-fool person...
Then we will show the interaction between them, and the consequences... ^^

We will work our short this way ;)


We already have the guidelines of the scenario, we need to finalize it and make the storyboard before posting it.

We already have some concept sketchs too and some of the models are started, we will post that soon...

well, while waiting for the storyboard, here is some screens of the Alien spaceship... Only the rear side for now :p

(I will fill the holes with details of course, but before, i must finish the global shape) :p

from sparkee: base alien mesh before zbrushing. The neck will be almost invisible.

Hey guys,

Great start. The stylization of the ship looks fantastic. I can't wait to see what you do with the characters.

On the alien concept, it looks like the drawing had an eye that contained an iris and a pupil along. The build, as it is now, seems to have a glassy black eye similar to more traditional alien drawings. I would stick with what you have in the drawing. Since you are going to be playing on emotion in particular in this short, having an eye with expressive qualities will help alot in getting the characters to read.

Are you going to have words in this short or are you going to do everything with pantomime and sound effects?

ankheilw> First, don't worry, we keep the idea of the pupil, it will be a square, or a rectangular one, but it's not yet fixed, we will set it in texture. (here, it's only fast shader to haven't to put a black/grey render picture ;) )

For the voice, the human will only have to laugh (and myabe few sounds more, but no words), and the alien will produce sounds, but nothing really comparable to words (we will probably play with some vocoders for him ;) )

It good to see someone who has figured out that even if a creature is bipedal, the proportions don't have to be human. this guy is cute, and maybe intimidating if done right. Almost all of david's aliens have the potential to be scary to humans, if for no other reason than that the aliens have been around for billions of years longer than humans.

that ship is one of the coolest things i've seen in this challenge so far, personally.

love the contrast between minute details, and large smooth areas. i wish more sci-fi these days had interesting design like this... seems like everything hese days is either super gritty or super sleek & shiny. keep up the good work, look forward to seeing more!
