When exactly does your computer get chunky?
Are you having trouble with rendering it, or just moving around in your scene?
If its moving around in the scene, you could do a few different things:
Hide some of the heavier objects while your not working on them. (to hide: right click > hide selected)
Display your geometry as a box. (to display as box : right click > proprieties > check display as box)
Put an optimize modifier on them for a while to reduce their polycount.
If its rendering your having a problem with:
Check your render settings, make sure your final gather isnt doing a retarted number of bounces or your not using more than about 150 FG rays.
Check your AA settings.
Theres some other things you can do, but until we know more about exactly where your geting slowed down, try those.
-Hope this helps
