Well! I have a habit of biting off more than I can chew, so I'm going to attempt to complete a trailer for the Uplift movie.
Definately going with a Michael Bayified version, that would more than likely get fans up in arms in terms of design choices, but would still come off looking cool. ;)

Concepts coming, and as soon as its completed, the storyboards will be up!

Good luck everyone!

The Streaker...
Heavily influenced by the Matrix hovercrafts, I want the streaker to have an almost aquatic shape...but be very 'slapped together'.
It has to look like it could operate underwater, aswell as in space.
The side engines flare outwards a little, and will swivel like a rudder directing the ship in both outer space, and under the oceans.

The Streaker...
Just playing around with a way to get a basic feel for the interior.

I will be modeling the bridge, medical lab, and a corridor. They will all have the same basic feel to them, so I will be modeling several different sections that I can duplicate around and build up the basic shapes of the rooms.

I hope to have the medical lab roughed out by tomorrow. Hopefully Ill be able to reach a nice balance between 'sterile', and 'industrial'. Going to be a balancing act!

Great start. Remember that a good deal of the ship can be flooded to allow the neo-dolphin crew to operate when the ship lands, so those exposed wires might not make total sense. A neat idea would be to have bunches of wires in clear plastic sheaths or something... I really like the cobbled-together technology look, though. It will really help to distinguish the human technology from that of the Galactics.

There will be an alien body on the table, with the holographic representation of its internals and such. I think that all good sci-fi needs a medical facility with holographic stuff. ;)
The doctor will be live action.
There are still quite a few devices that need to be added...computer screens, surgical robot arms that come from the roof, pipes and 'dodads'.

Thanks for the crits mate. ;)
My idea for the neo dolphins is that they were uplifted by splicing them with human DNA, and as such are bipedal in nature (although they still have a very aquatic quality about them...just need to scan the concept!).
Main reason for this is that I have no idea how I would film my actors in zero gravity interacting with the neodolphin crew.

The corridors will have two levels...one above water, and the other below, so that the neodolphins can operate in both environments. I love the wire in plastic sheaths idea!

The Neodolphin...

I figured that given todays technology, if we wanted to 'uplift' a species to our level of sentience, we would splice in a good portion of human DNA.
My idea for the neodolphins is that they have a large percentage of 'us' in them...also, to work harmoniously with humans, it stands to reason that we would engineer them to be bipedal in nature.
Being born in either water, or a semi weightless environment (on a spaceship), their muscles would develop differently...i figure that things are easier to lift/move around, so the arms wouldn't necessarily be well built. The fingers merely 'evolved' from the dolphins flippers (a dolphins bones in its flippers look remarkably like a human hand!). The vertebrae by the neck remain fused, as with quite a few larger aquatic animals, thus giving it a slightly hunched over look.

In my storyboards, I noticed that you never see the neodolphins from the waist down. Im hoping to add in a shot showing them swimming outside the streaker-but thats only if I have enough time.

I was watching an 80's B-Movie called Intruders while I sketched this...more than likely there is quite a large influence of 'Greys' in there-but hell...greys rock. :D

great start on the modeling!
only crit so far - and maybe you are still working on it - is to give the light and equipment hanging over the bed some more detail and making them look far more advanced.

but we are still in an early stage

so good luck

Pyke

Nothingness-

The medical lab definately still needs more detail and alot more work, specificaly in the equipment that will be hanging above the bed. Im researching old dental tools for the inspiration of the drills and scalples, and other medical equipment...going to be rather fun!

Still need an idea for the look of the alien body...im tempted to go with a standard looking alien...but im thinking instead of going with something more bio-mechanical. Its literally only a 3 second shot in the trailer-so I dont want to get to bogged down in the details...

With regards to the general design, im a firm believer in the fact that when makers have to much money-they ruin films. I want to try and keep the style of the sets and such grounded in reality..in that a set builder could actually build it-using preexisting items.
Im thinking of the production design as someone who perhaps doesnt have alot of money to spend on post production, and needs to recycle as much as possible.

Dironik

Thank you so much mate. :D It comes from dealing with difficult clients, and having the ability to pull answers from thin air to justify choices that I just think are cool at the time (Im an interior designer by trade.). :)
Also love the direction you are going with in your movie!

Still LOTS of detailing to do!

I wanted it to look like both human and neodolphins had worked on the design of the streaker, so gave it some slightly smoother lines than I had originally anticipated, combined with the harder edges of the human technology.

The engines can detach if needed, to avoid..well..engines blowing up. ;) They are also 'added on' to give the streaker the idea that it has only recently been retrofitted with engines capable of light speed (sub light? pick your scifi cliche!) space flight.

The underside is going to have landing gear, and a lamp to load up supplies on. There is going to be a quick 'harbor' sequence showing the streaker with its landing gear unfolded, partially submerged in water....why water? I have no idea. Fun. :D

Started on the neodolphin...trying something new. I took a previous skeleton I had, and modified it to fit into the concept idea for the dolphin, using it as a base to wrap the skin around.

I agree with ivanisavich: I hate to see the elaborate bones hidden. On the other hand, you might opt to making your alien more anatomically correct (I mean some of its muscles between its arms and chest seem missing, for instance) and muscular, perhaps...

The streaker in a drydock, being fitted out for its journey.
This has most of the major CG Elements in it. Im going to sneak into a construction site down the road from me with my hardhat and a tripod, and try to steal the background plate.

Ive always loved that part in Lost In Space where the helmet grows over the one guys head. Just awesomeness and coolness....so naturally I want that in my trailer. ;)

Having not read the book, I'm not entirely certain if there are scenes with a marine force..or at least militarized forces on board the streaker-but hell, if Peter Jackson can have elves at Helms Deep, I'm having kick ass marines!

The costume was pretty basic...leather jacket, a mutilated black t shirt, cap, and some other stuff strapped to my arms. The gun is an Airsoft gun I bought at a flea market, with the magazine removed.
The full plate is pretty clean, but I think I'm going to reshoot it with a lot less ambient lighting.
My HD cam performs horribly in low light conditions...so its going to take some tweaking.

Whats going to happen is the marine is going to turn around, about 45 degrees from where he is standing now...while this happens, his combat helmet will unfold over his face (ala Lost In Space). The entire shot is roughly 75 - 100 frames, including the 10 frame or so fade in and out.
I'm still designing the combat helmet...its so tempting to go with something like the Deep Eyes in Final Fantasy...but I really want something different.

Thanks so much for taking the time to take a look at my thread! ;)
I agree that he definately needs some muscles and tendons under his arm...Ill be working on him tonight, so ill add in some parts where he looks a little...beefier.

ivanisavich

Thanks mate. :) I must say your anim is coming together nicely!
Making his skin translucent would be awesome, except then I would have to model the rest of his organs. I was watching Total Recal last night, and think that perhaps I should have some sort of scene where the neodolphin walks past a scanner....or something. Just trying to think how a cool scene like that could fit into the story...
Perhaps in the medical lab, when they are looking at the alien body, the neodolphin could either walk past a scanner, or when he moves close to the skeleton being scanned, the scanner also scans through him?

you could maybe add some more sort of yellowish fatty deposit type colour to your petrified alien, or even some frissled hair or skin, something to break up the uniformity of the current skin., sorta like this:

I took the comments above, and embellished quite a bit more. Did some tweaking of the textures to make him (her?) look a little more...grotesque, and dead.
The yellow fatty deposits definitely help sell the 'ew' factor. :D

Adding in hair, i thickened them up, and made it feel a little more like sinew than hair...i wanted it feel that it could be an abnormal growth, or something natural, just the way this aliens physiology would work. In reality, I see it as some sort of space born parasite that has attached to the body and is slowly covering it.

The growths on its back are swellings of gas pockets under its skin...I want to give the feeling that this body is extremely delicate..that it could literally 'pop' if handled to harshly. That is why the 'autopsy' is done without actually touching the body, and entirely on a holographic display.

That first charred body looks way better. In that last one you're really losing the sense that it was at one time a living thing.

axiomatic
04-11-2008, 06:39 AM
I disagree with killer-instinct93 but i think his concern is worth keeping in mind when you integrate the alien into the scene. I think the medical scene will have a real sense of mystery too it (playing on all the x-files type mythology in film/tv) and you might want to have 2-3 quick cuts in your trailer - assuming you can shuffle around some frames.

With that in mind you can aim for an initial "what is that gross thing?" response, then in the following cuts you could hint at it's more human/bipedal similarities ... audience might even think "whats this about ancient human remains on other planets?!?" - you'd be aiming for people to see the similarities after being revolted, great human-alien interaction there at an audience level :) Finally you could cut to reveal it is an alien (emotive threat/suspense) and that the aliens been killed by this spore type virus thing, adds to the emotional connection i think :)

So yeah, i think it will be good with the extra bits as long as you use them to illicit an emotive response.

As for the texture, i like the think hairs, they're sorta gross. I think maybe veins and SSS on the sacks could be good? A type of looking-through-your-eyelid feel.

Again, wonderful work, it's nice to think we might be helping :)

Not very interesting. ;)

The streaker will be comped in, whizzing through the clouds. Its a short shot (75 frames).

Made by using a matte painting of clouds, camera mapping, particle flow, and some creative placement of background plates.

The clouds and all of the hard surface stuff looks great, but I don't think how the alien fits in... There is something about the mouth that really bothers me... he looks like a Tim Burton -style character... And I guess he could fit in if you have a Burton-esque type of scenery. And the texture... it looks great but - my apologies - but he looks like a baked cookie! No offense intended, just observing... It might look better when he's animated... He just looks kinda - dry, despite the specularity on the surface.

The clouds are actually pretty easy to do, and render times are about 40 seconds with nothing else in the scene.
Basically I googled for a whole lot of cloud images, and created a matte painting by just pasting them together. You could just use a raw photo you have found or taken.

I used Jonas Ussing's fantastic cloud tutorial to help me in setting up the PFlow (http://www.duck.dk/). (http://www.duck.dk/)
Only, instead of using just a white colour as the diffuse texture, I used MAX's camera mapping, and projected the matte painting over the 20000 particles that the PFlow had created. Because of the irregular nature of the clouds, you dont really notice and overlaps, and because its just flat particles with no lighting (the lighting obviously 'baked' into the painting), it renders out at about 40 seconds a frame.

There are limitations, such as you cant really go past the borders of the original image, and you may need to do some creative compositing with your alpha maps-but cos this was only for one shot of about 75 frames, it works fantastically.

liveman,

Thanks for taking the time to look at my thread! You are correct about the mouth...its the distinct lack of lips! I was showing him to a few people yesterday, and they all said 'but how does he speak?'. Ill be extenting it a little to show his dolphinesk 'beak', and add in a few blendshapes exposing his teeth a little.
In regards to the spec, do you thikn if I add in a few veins and such under his skin, itll solve the 'baked cookie' feel?

I do have an animation of him moving around, which ill upload as soon as I get a chance (work is calling!)

Thanks again guys. More coming shortly! I have completed the full animatic, just need to tweak it and upload it tonight or tomorrow.
Also, I have the two opening shots currently rendering on our little farm here, so hopefully by tomorrow afternoon Ill have something to upload.

Yeah, about the look, Maybe the veins should be longer and thiner, so you can realy see them... They should make some sense in corelation with the head... Maybe you should think about the underlying structure of his organism, then you might get a better idea on how he should look on the surface...

The discovery of the derelict ships, that leads to the universes aliens chasing down our band of hero's.

Still WIP. There will be A LOT more debris, as well as a few more ships in the shot, mainly in the background. In the book, i believe it is an entire fleet that is discovered.

Also going to have a small layer of the captains skiff flying through the field.

Our classic 'trailer wording' is going to have blurred shots of medical equipment in the background, hopefully alluding to the genetic creation of the Neodolphins, and the human way of 'uplifting' a species.

I have done 5 of these shots, (2 still to render), and will be flipping two of them, and speeding them up a little to get 7 altogether for the wording. Still looking for a decent font..

One of the final shots has the marine (played by yours truly!) turning around, and having a helmet fold and clip over his face. Pyke
05-25-2008, 01:11 PM
Thanks man. :D

Im going to make a compilation of all the completed shots and upload them tomorrow, as soon as I figure out this damned CGUploader thing...
I also need to put up the Animatic aswell!

The gun is a toy I bought at a fleamarket. It had a scope that you put on the top, and a magazine that you could detach.
I took out the magazine, and covered the hole with black card, and stuck the scop on the bottom of the gun, underneath...nothing very fancy, and having the shot so contrasted really helps remove any detail that may show its a toy. ;)

Ill upload a few pics of the props tomorrow aswell. Got another handgun which is going to have a few CG Elements to it.

Tonight Im finishing all the wording shots, the derelict space scene, a streaker/alien ship chase, and hopefully getting out two more marine action shots.
I want to get all the hard bodied stuff out by wednesday, so that I can finish the alien stuff (the medical exam, a few shots of the neodolphines, and a few shots of the 'bad aliens...which I havent even started yet!), in the next week.

16 days left....I dunno where the time went!

icedeyes

This looks amazing... Especially the streaker in the clouds and the shot with the marine...

Only one thing that bugs me in the final shot is that if you have a lightwrap on yourself, its a little bit more subtle than it has to... If that light was just behind you i think the side of your head would be a bit more iluminated... Might be just me though...

Again, great work,
Have fun,
George

All shots are rendered at 1280 * 720...im hoping that the final one that the judges get will look quite a bit better. :D When im done, ill have the final in full res for download, if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the crits man...really appreciate it! Ill try to adjust the lighting as far as i can. It was my first greenscreen shoot.....in my bathroom, with very general light. The next batch im going to experiment with setting up the light a little better.

Awesome! Love the fly-by shots at the end (right before and after the soldier shot)...and the tracking for that eyepiece seems spot on! I've never done head tracking before...but you nailed it :D

And yea...the flv is pretty harsh eh. Thing that sucks is the final version has to be submitted at 640x480 (that's also why yours is horizontally squashed).....you'd think that in 2008 we'd have AT LEAST the possibility to submit the final in HD :/

Pyke
05-26-2008, 11:49 AM
Thanks for the tracking comment mate. It was my first time tracking a head...I did it frame by frame, with a low res proxy of my own head. Its defintely not easy, and I have ALOT more respect for the poor sods who had to track in Robert Downy Jr for Ironman. :D

Yeah-Im gonna have to re-render it and letterbox it.

Im hoping that the judges maybe download the HD's if they are available. Maybe we can have an option to link to an HD version hosted by ourselves, to not completely destroy the servers?

I just used one of those free compressors....is there a way to keep the artifacting down when converting to an FLV? Its honestly a horrible HORRIBLE format. I suppose it makes it easier for the judges to check them out.

adib
05-26-2008, 11:52 AM
Hi, I think you can do a better quality, check the option of flv convertor.By default is not good but you can change the bit rate, and you l see a better quality.

The music is by Chris haigh ( http://www.cphproductions.co.uk/ ), an AWSOME composer.

Please note that there are still a few filler shots in there (taken from games, and other movie trailers), that will be replaced with the finished comps.

The previs was put together from game trailers, movies, screengrabs...basically to get a good feel for the flow of the action.

Hey mate so I'm a bit confused....was that all your work? Or is it pieced together from different sources to sort of outline the action (you mentioned game trailers and stuff)? Because it was pretty epic!

Pyke
06-16-2008, 05:19 PM
Hey Tyson-

Na-none of that was mine. :D I knew I was going to make a trailer, so I went to my 'cool shorts and trailers' directory, and cut up the sequences I thought looked similar to what I had in my head, saved them as smaller cuts, and then pieced them together to make the previs. I save them basically as things like 'ALIEN SHOT 1, ALIEN SHOT 2, FLYBY 1, FLY BY 2, FLY BY 3, HUMAN CLOSEUP 1, etc. ' So nothing specific...just a freefrom edit to get the flow of the action into something I could see.

Basically from then on it was a case of replacing those 'stolen' (borrowed?) clips, with ones that I'd blocked out. The actual previs stage consisted of about 4 or 5 animations, each one slightly more refined than the previous. So like, once I had all my greenscreen stuff shot, I replaced those stolen shots with the green screen ones.

I did it like this, cos it was alot easier to reorder things, and see something concrete without having to render/draw and scan anything at all. If I didnt like a certain sequence, I just tossed it out, and scoured my trailer directory for another.

I think my first pass even had some of your work in it!

Im doing a similar thing with my next short project...basically cutting up certain scenes from movies that I really love, and splcing my own dialog and stuff to get the timing correct, before I start any modeling/filming/drawing. Its not the best way to do it-but its quite a fun experience, and its very very fast.
