View Full Version : Step keying in Max and Maya?
blenderhead 03-26-2008, 04:06 PM I find the 'in-betweening' the computer does between my keys really distracting...how can turn this off in 3DS Max and Maya so I can block out my animation in peace? :) Is it done through the curve editors?

In Maya, go to "Window" -> "Settings/Preferences" -> "Preferences". Then go to the Animation tab and set your Default in tangent to Linear, and your Default out tangent to "Stepped".
That should go the trick!

In Maya you can also do it in the Graph Editor. There are buttons at the top of the window that change the selected frames to stepped, spline, flat, etc.

For Max change the "Default In/Out Tangents for New Keys" to step. It is to the right of the "Set Key" button.

One more question (didn't know if the edit would bump the thread so sorry for the double post)
In Maya you can zoom in and translate through the timeline in the main viewport, how can I do this in Max? I think I've seen this before but can't remember how.

How do I revert back to the computer inbetweening? I select all the keys and hit 'linear' again, both from the curve editor and the button beside the timeline and nothing works?

Changing the default out tangent in the Preferences windows only applies to keys set after you make that change. To change the keys already set, like you're trying to do, go into the graph editor, select the keys you want and hit the button at the top of the window for whatever out tangent you need.

Tried that already, no change. Any other ideas?

If I understand you correctly, that you're trying to go from stepped curves back to spline curves, then the method already mentioned is the correct way. Something isn't right if it's not working. Are you sure you're selecting the object/character, then selecting all the keys in the graph editor, then selecting the spline curves button?

Yup I'm sure...hmmm. Hope I haven't lost a load of animation...

It sounds like you are doing the right thing. One of the reasons it may not be working is because some of the controls you animated may be custom attributes. By default, selecting all of your keys and hitting linear will not change the keys that are using custom attributes.
In order to fix this you can either find the custom attribute in the graph editor and keep expanding it until the keys for your controls show up, then select the keys and change them (they will be a darker greenish color in the graph editor)
or..
you can pick up a useful script by Brad Noble.. which apparently he recently took off of his site. So PM me with an email or something and I can send it to you.
Brad's script will change any keys you have selected to whatever in/out tangents you need just by selecting them and hitting the button. The great part about it is that it works for custom attributes, and the current tangent utility he has on his site apparently does not. I know that the version I have works because I use it all the time so let me know if you want it and I can send it.
hopefully this helps
