Hi,

don't worry about that. Hardware render is a diferent render engine that uses your graphics card to make it faster.

It's kind of strange you know? It's not practical because many times you have to render some things in harsware and other in software and you have to composite them later.
I think this is diferent in Maya 5, though.

I'm also a C4D user (and betatester) and I'm learning Maya (I'm in a Maya course right now). I wouldn't recomend you switch to Maya because there are so many things that are just easier, faster and better in C4D, but Maya is definetely a great tool to add to your toolset so you can choose whatever suits each project better. So, if you have both and are familiar with both... you'll be dangerous!

Well kraal. I found cinema4d easier too understand and price wise its a great fantastic deal with extremely great tools ( have u seen the new boolean plugin? )
I am currently using maya and not touched cinema4d because i felt it was better to enter the industry with maya knowledge instead. But the renders at first are going to be depressing when u use maya (dont know bout metal ray in maya5) but i presonally find cinema4d faster and better at rendering. (no pun intented for maya mental ray users as ive seen tons of good work on maya too) but cinema4d just is easier and the tools are easy to figure out.

But i feel maya has a much better workflow when it comes to modeling and things are produced just faster.

also started with cinema4d....when you first start using maya you will be a bit dissapointed because you don't just hit render and the image will look cool.

but after using it for some time you would never switch back to cinema4d, maybe you will combine them (cinema for rendering) but with mental ray it's not neccessary at all.

mayas modeling and animation tools are sooooo much better compared to cinemas tools.

oh and to the paritcles:
don't know which maya version you are using, but maya differents between software and hardware particles. software particles can be rendered with the standard maya render (and now in vers. 5 also with mental ray) and hardware particles have to be rendered extra. they have to be combined in a compositing package then.

One thing I can't find in Maya which I saw on a demonstration of Cinema 4d 8 on 3dfestival was blending poses for lets say hands. It was extremly awesome and I would've missed that if I switched from Cinema 4d ;)

you can do that in the trax editor, or by using the blendAttr node. This functionality has been in maya since version 3

Yea..People seem to avoid the trax editor for some reason because they think it's just for games and such. It's great for pose to pose animation.

I never understand when people go, I want to do pose to pose animation but I don't want to use the trax editor (seen it in a previous post), I just kinda shake my head, because that's what it is there for, why woudn't you use it? Unless you need to export the animation to some exotic program.

Anyway, my 2 or 3 cents.

how high-end is your high-end home system?

I run maya on a 3d boxx , and it runs flawlessly. dual amd 1.6 , 1 gig ram , quadro 4 900.

running maya on a xp2000+, 1gb ram and a gf2 gts (with softquadro)

works pretty good....just rendering could be faster :)

and painting weights on a model with too many polygons is a headache....
