Title: Worlds Collide
Name: Ognian Bonev
Country: Bulgaria
Software: 3ds max, mental ray, Photoshop

A mechanical Harvester unit caught in a deadly battle with one of the guardians of the realm.

My idea here was to represent the first (and deadly) encounter between two different and opposing species : a mechanical self-reproducible race which invades habitats to harvest all the resources in presence and an Ent-like forest creatures protecting their land (cliché story , I know ;))

Modeled & rendered in 3ds max / mental ray, textures, part of the post fx and additional corrections made in Photoshop.

cool concept and great realization. the background is amazing, as is the harvester. the "guardian of the realm" is a little puzzling (blue tentacles coming out of a tree?) but still, great piece.

Sick!!! Great image. I looks like some of the depth was lost in the final comp, but not sure that is a bad thing, I just really liked the crispness of the robot and leaves in the progress shot. But, whatever, looks fantastic. Cheers

My first thought about the image was no way, that's not 3d... then I saw your break down and holy crap... it is 3d. Is the background 3d as well or did you paint that in with Photoshop?

Great job and congrats on the front page.

Very nice composition, the colour scheme works very well and the foreground and background compliment each other.

The model is very impressive, I assumed there would be a load of z-brushing involved, but the wireframe proved me wrong :)

Thanks one more time guys.

aphextweak – yes , the background is 2D / matte painting

Borilius - thanks mate J

Seandinwiddie - as for the foliage I usually use several planes with alpha to form different
“patches” of vegetation and then distributing them over the scene. Something like that :

Your image is arresting and beautiful. You've captured the struggle between good and evil with a very deft hand. I love the moss, fog and water that give realism to this purely fantasy world. It makes me believe that somewhere this could really be going on.

todd4cgi
04-03-2008, 06:23 PM
the "guardian of the realm" is a little puzzling (blue tentacles coming out of a tree?)

Why are you looking for Earth-like characteristics in what is clearly a science fiction/fantasy based scene? Since when do we dictate the parameters science fiction-fantasy artists need to adhere to? I'm confused by your comments.

ARTig
04-04-2008, 09:50 AM
Cliché story, but: perfekt realisation. And I think you found a new perspektive about that theme.
