View Full Version : School project - Head _still strugling
Petrik 05-09-2003, 01:29 AM Well I am still strugling with getting the right method to model a head. This is the first result I am actually semi happy with and just as well.
I chose this as my project for my next assignment. I had the side pic for a long time and getting an assignment to model a creature seemed the perfect time to use it.
I have been trying to create a head for a long time and always spent all my time trying to get the technique worked out. So now that I have a head I can finally start looking at how to get a body for it.
Anyhow hope you all like the result. It's the best I've done so far.

you must be using Lightwave with this level of detail

looking nice so far!!
you have a bit too much polys on the back of the head right now, it risks on becoming a heavy and hardly manageable mesh.
the rest looks fine!
if you're going for head modeling, be sure to get yourself
Edge Tools
Polygon Spin
(search for them on www.flay.com )
keep us updated!

Maybe you could draw on the image to show what you mean. I dont see how I can reduce the number of polygons at the back of the head without killing the rest of the mesh.
Also I had a look for the plugins you mentioned. I found Edge Tool by D Storm but there is no sign of a Polygon Spin. Is this much different from Spin Quad which is standard in Lightwave?

This still needs more work. the back of the head needs to be smoother and the general shape needs to be tweaked. Add more detail with the bandsaw so you keep the topolgy and flow, add some more creases and wrinkles. the nose needs much more detail - add nostrals and the mouth needs lips. Search for more reference on the net, the image you are modelling from is too simple for details, try looking at proper human faces as a basis for the details and then add them in the style of the goblin.
hope this helps, its a good start!!

Do you have a front view template to model this?
If not that would be advisable.

Well as I said I have had this pic for a long time with the view of modeling it some day. The side view was the only drawing of this character (It came from a whole sheet of little sketches someone had done). I drew a very basic front view to help out (see pic).
The back of the head was hard to do because it has that some what flatish shape. I think I'll leave the head as it is right now and if I get time after having completed the body I'll go back and fine tune it before connecting everything.
I will have this character even if it kills me. :bounce:

That front on drawing looks nothing like the side on drawing. As I said before you need more reference.

Well the due date for the assignment is fast aproaching. I have a body for him. Just some ears and maybe a few teeth and then it's on to the texturing nightmare.

Any program is good, as long as you can use it correctly.
Petrik obviously has a long way to go...
(You gotta add more detail, and use cylinders for limbs, with a box for head. Study some anatomy, or have it handy by your side.)
