A quick heads up, this one is for the more novice animators that may be frequenting here. We (CG Academy) have a new DVD on Animation in 3dsmax due for release later this week (we are due to take stock on the 26th March).
The DVD covers the fundamentals of animating in 3dsmax. The approach is to teach the core principles of animation, which in this case are the non-character animation specific principles i.e. mass and weight, timing and spacing, overlapping action and so on. Along the way the GUI elements needed to learn these principles, and put them into practice is taught by the instructor.
The second DVD in this series will move on to teach the character specific skills, and will expand on the principles taught in the first DVD. We wanted to make the first DVD as applicable as possible to all 3dsmax animators out there. So the goal in this first DVD was to teach you how to simply make things move realistically.
This will make it of great use to those that need to animate anything really, not just characters. And of course this also lays the foundation for character animation. So the basic breakdown here is to teach you how to make "things" move reaslistically firstly, and then move on to give those "things" some life and intelligence when you need too...
The tutor for this series is Simon Thistlethwaite, who is a character animator at a top London FX studio. Simon recently completed work on the BAFTA and Oscar winning FX work in The Golden Compass. He was one of the animators that worked on the (very well received) polar bear FX shots for the movie.
He has also worked on the award winning Walking With Monsters and also series one of Primeval (both TV projects) as a character animator. He is currently beavering away on another major hollywood film project due for release this summer.
Anyway, check out the products page here. Its a really great DVD (imho) and at over eight hours of tutorship from an industry pro represents absolutely killer value for money.
