He's off and he's running and given us an update showing a cool concept. The idea is good and the close, intimate composition looks ideal. As for me, I'd be terrified of illustrating figures that close to the 'camera' but I know you'll do something really special with this. Good luck buddy

That's another really cool composition. Fantastic stuff buddy. That comment I made about the first composition was not meant to be a criticism of it. It was more a case of admiring the fact that you're able to handle that kind of work so well.
The new composition works on a level of revealing more of the characters. I really like those little alien details like the spiny thing on the back of his neck. The second composition lacks some of the intimacy of the first composition though.
I really don't know which one I like the best. They are both excellent
heyyy here's my friend nwiz25 !!! Glad to see you in bro :D Best of luck buddy, I am looking forward to see more of your art, but for now ... huhuh

Nekomouse ~ thanks a lot for your kind words my friend :) there'll be another post to choose between two compostions .. lets see which one takes it ;)
Russel-Nash ~ thanks a lot bro! i'll be visiting your post in a while .. just by looking at the thumbnail image .. me went  cheers n good luck to you too!
Thaldir ~ thanks a lot bro! do have a look at the latest post and choose the one that works the best ... coz i really want to frame the emotion well with this piece :)
mdavid ~ hey bro! hehe .. me actually is very confused as to how to get this one right .. coz somehow i did like the earlier one with the ' up close and personal ' thing goin on .. but then again .. with the second one ... the alien identity 'reveal' said a lot about their relationship .. coz she is human and he is alien in all ways .. well .. me posting two of them to see which one works .. ;) cheers bro! choose the best one for me! :p
bouboul ~ yooooooooo dude!! awesome to see you here man! missed ya a lot! well ... let the show begin! this is gonna be great! good luck to you as well!

wheee Mister Nev, I was worried we wouldn't have you around this time but now you're on! just cool.
Mmmmh.. I think the framming of your pic will deppend of how much of a setting you'll need or want to show, if that's not really important then I'd vote for A, but thinking again you can start with B and crop it later on when you're sure you won't need so much of a background. I had to expand my canvas last time when I was halfway done and it was a friggin' hassle, Please don't let that happen to you:sad:.
Good times buddy...
mdavid
03-30-2008, 11:12 PM
I like 'A' best too. It has more intimacy and is somehow a more sensitive framing of the scene. And 'A' still has plenty of opportunity to convey the alien aspect of the figure on the right

Hello,
Very interesting looking idea for a pic. Like somebody spoke earlier: it has that intimate look of a real drama.
But we have to wait for more updates. I'd like to see more, no doubt.
As for A/B dilemma I vote for A! Close up makes it look even more eye-catching.
PS Thx for your words of encouragement on my thread.
Good luck, mate!

more soon my friends :p

04-14-2008, 02:36 AM
Hi Neville, nice stuff. Definitely fooled me into thinking it was 3D. I would recommend against total blackness in your finished piece. Instead of showing some background setting, you can try adding interesting effects like in the poster "My Blueberry Nights" for example: http://www.filmtakip.com/filmres/or/MY-BLUEBERRY-NIGHTS.jpg
I'm waiting to see the girl. :) All the best and keep it up!

brrrhmmm ~ that is so true buddy ... in fact .. the time contraint is already a major challenge in itself, as for me .. work pressure, tiredness, sometimes the thought of completing a little bit of the entry doesn't even hit me :( .. all my energy gets drained at work :( i really have to hand it to the other artists who have already come this far with their colour pass and some have even completed their entry on time :O wow!
thanks for dropping by my friend! really glad to see you here :)
AxelAlonso ~ a big hello my dear friend!! :bounce: missed ya a lot! .. as for the features n lighting .. a very helpful reference image that i found a few weeks back lifted a big load off my shoulders .. the only thing i had to do was replace the human features of the male character with alien features which further came from a 'dolphin' .. ( the gills n fins ) everything else is already set, only downside is the reference image is not big enough to analyse details, i'll have to come up with my own set of details when working on the high res version ... plus i'll have to think of a good colour palette or leave it as an old photograph .. lots of ideas comin up .. so in short ... 40% of my work is cut out for me .. the rest is still an important chunk for me to execute well .. i hope :(
MartinNielsen ~ hey bro! i just visited your thread .. and boy was i dazzled! .. plus teased too :( :( :( ... lol ... best wishes to you bro! take care! :p
Ivy00 ~ me always ready to help my dear friend! .. in fact, the tools i use in order to get those lines n shades are :
eraser .. playing with opacity settings for this tool, i can control how much i want a specific area to be erased, whether it's 100% or 50% .. this helps me shade better
pen tool .. those sharp lines are created using the pen tool, followed by the eraser to get rid of certain areas..
smudge tool .. finally, i use this tool to 'disperse' some areas inside out .. a fine e.g is an 'area shadow' .. how it stretches from sharp to blurry ;)
hope it was of help :p .. let me know if you get stuck ;)
thanks for dropping by! best wishes to you!
Ivy00
04-16-2008, 01:02 AM
Thank you Neville, I use eraser the same way, such a wonderful little tool. It is that darn pen tool in Photoshop that I get so frustrated with. One of these days I will master it.
Hey Neville, great my friend!! Is incredible to see how your brushes develop in a totally magic way the forms and details on your painting  . Really cool control on the lighting and shadows. The expression for him is awesome!! :D Great work my friend!! All the best!! :)

GaeasHerald ~ hey dude!! great to see you here! hehehe .. yup, this is not 3d .. but i have to owe to my reference image that helped me shade it the way i wanted to... the extra alien details were the only tricky parts, coz they have to match up to the scene's lighting, as for his cheeks .. that's just to show that they're actually a little sunken and not bloated up, compared to the reference photo, i've exaggerated that feature a little bit more ... thanks for visiting my friend! :p
Neubius ~ thanks a lot bro! thats makes me a lot better! coz i was wondering that i won't be colourizing it in a certain way ... instead aim for a classic 'sepia' tone look .. kind of like an old photograph ... i hope i get to do that in time  lets see how it turns out ..
OZ ~ bless you buddy! thanks a bunch!

It's going really well Neville, the dark enviroment and the soft shadows mix good. Maybe some of the details are too sharp, like the edges of the gills and the fold of the armpit, but nothing big... just wanted to contribute something.:D I know you'll do just fine

MartinNielsen ~ hey bro! :bounce: colours are goin to be a surprise .. i'm aiming for a classic old look .. sepia ;) ... it all goes with the story :p hope it all turns out fine :S
Donglu-LittleFish ~ warm greetings to you my friend! :p very happy to see you here :p .. as for this piece .. i owe it all to the reference image that catapulted me to take it to a much higher level ...
soft, sharp strokes, more smudging, lots of exaggerated features; long eyebrows and eyelashes etc .. are the extras that i've added that are not present in the reference image .. i felt it needed that touch to really show what they shared ... on the other hand, there are lot of other things are left which will complete the story ..
but then again, time is running out  ..
thanks for dropping by dear! best wishes to you!

This is amazing Neville. I'm still speechless about this being a 2D image. Thinking of the deadline and the colours, maybe you can just make a B&W image. The sepia tone idea is great also; I reckon the colors will not matter as much as good texturing and lighting. Just my point of view...
Can't wait to see the final image!

I love the faces and their eyes it's just made with lots of emotion and value. Almost like a wedding picture were loves existing with out boundaries! Really nice to see all your excellent taste in art and life made with this professionalism!
One comment her skull shape might look a bit to small in the back, but maybe it’s because the light won’t hit there? And also could be that I am used to see bumpier skull shapes? Although I thought was better to point it out my friend! It’s great to see all this work!:applause:

Really great detail and very fine work! :) Amazing work, my Friend:) ! (Do you use the alpha channel for the boarder or rim?)
I have to agree with Axel about the females skull shape - it looks a bit small as if a part is missing. I asume that you'll add hair later on? Then it wont be a problem I think.
Keep up the great work! Can't wait to see your colours!

thanks a million, for your enouragement and suggestions! me was really hoping to see you all here and point out a few things :) ... hehe .. yup, i had a big hunch when posting the wip image, that if i left the head that way,it'll be disturbing, but actually it's temporary .. i already have/had a clear picture in mind as to what should be there instead of hair ( which is present in the reference image ) .. in fact, i'm very tempted right now to give away the story but i think i'll keep it till the end ;) now the plot thickens :D .. reading all your comments, it's a great push for me to go further and finish this piece before time runs out ..
there are many parts which are absolutely tricky coz i have to match the lighting that is in the reference image, but i think i'll be able to pull it off ;) let's see how it goes ...
as to whether i've used an alpha channel .. nope :p i use lots n lots of layers, burn tool, transparency blend modes, and really big blobs of black to blend the characters in .. for that i mostly use the eraser to gradually fade the edges so that it doesn't appear patchy :)
scala ~ i totally agree with you :) ... once i'm done, i'll get cracking on the animated gif :p ..
i thank you all for your valuable input, but most of all .. your encouragement!
it's a blessing!

This is just gorgeous, Neville! The expressions on both faces, the tenderness between them, and as usual, your trademark meticulous attention to rendering that makes your 2D work look utterly 3D. I like her expression, and while I don't know your whole story yet - you're being so secretive! - I can sense from the last exchanges that it's something both tender and happy and sad at the same time... maybe just some oh-so-subtle wrinkles on her forehead will add a very subtle feeling of sadness and wistfulness to her face without making her smile any less? But it's not fair for me to comment without knowing whatemotions you're trying to elicit yourself. Anyhow, it's looking super, keep going! Get to color soon, you don't have much time left! :)
good luck!

Neville, your technics are awesome!!! Just can't imagine how you can achieve this kind of rendering using only 2D tools. Great subtle details and facial expression on the girl.
I can see and feel this story unfolding itself slowly...She frowns gently, yet she is smiling...melancholic for the not far separation, yet happy for this last moment of tenderness...she is not asking for more as she knows that she will hold this memory within for her life time...
You are not only talented technically, but also a great story teller! :applause:

i thank you all so very much! again i'll mention that, major credit goes to the single reference image i found that had the emotional connection i was looking for, the idea of using the reference image and adding extra details came from, none other than ... expose 5 coverart done by Jussi Lehtiniemi ...
http://kryptoreye.cgsociety.org/gallery/421347/
.. i was totally amazed how he binded the actual image painting with the forest itself, all so seamlessly .. that gave me headstart with this piece ...
the story had to be thought of even with the reference image in order to take it to a different route altogether ...
another challenge was to paint the entire image at 3k resolution while the actual size was 500 pixels in height :| ... making the minute details a little hard to get around with :( ..
all in all ... it was fun and frustating the same time in order to match the lighting with the rest of the piece ... but i'm happy no matter what :)
stay tuned for next updates my friends! :p

ok guys :) .... more specular details, shadows and first sepia color wash! ... still a few things left .. i gave into temptation and added the color :p ( was thinking of doing it toward the final )
hope it looks fine .. this is what i had in mind right from the start .. choosing the sepia color was not easy, as there were many many shades n tones out there ... finally i found another cool photograph that had a very classy color tone .. ;) the rest is now :p
cheers my friends!

by far the best of any of the "alien and human love" pictures...
yay!!
are you going to add more textures? or leave it sort and smoky?

Thanks for sharing your specular process, Neville. So when you say you gave in and added sepia - does that mean you're not planning on adding any more color than that? Interesting. Very classis looking. In that case, what elsae is left for you to do aside from signing it?

Wow Neville! The idea did come along in full detail view! I like so much the serenity and peaceful look in it! Great art my friend!:arteest:

Hey Neville, really cool!! like a lot the mood and felling on your image, awesome. Maybe the shoulder part of her is a bit dark in realtion with the light and shadows on the alien arm and the biceps of him looks a bit flat, only a comment :) Really superb work! Cyberone ~ thanks a million dude! yep .. kinda, i'm trying not to make everything look so evident .. in fact, more subtle .. most of the wrinkles and lumps are pretty faint but still can be seen .. more or less this is the final color tone i'm using
walrus ~ yo mike!! i'm happy you like the specular process :p hehe .. yep, this is it for the coloring, i think this is my first challenge work with a single tone, on the contrary, there are two other artworks in the gallery that don't have any color at all :) still have a bit to do .. will be back soon ;) thanks for dropping by dude! :p

I hope you win!
GO GO GO GO! even more amazing!! A part from the incredible 2d skills (really amazing and superior) what Kill me (in a positive way ;) obviously) is the style.Elegant (extremely) touching (maybe the most important aspect of the image) and in general beautifull. At the moment the image may be a closed work. Is already perfect for me...so i find myself unable to imagine what kind of "extra" touch you can put in. Marvellous.

Hey Neville, please don't stop there. Try to make a quick colour pass and see how it looks like. Show us too.
If you still don't want, please add some interesting skin textures to the couple: the pores, the bumps, the moles, the alien skin patterns (if any). Right now they look too plastic smooth.
How about the dazzling neon-like effects for the post, like the Blueberry Nights poster? Just some suggestions. But if you still can, try to keep going, push yourself further. The contest is almost done, so keep running to the end.

added a film grain layer to get rid of the smooth look .. plus i added specular details for her 'crown' ...
this time i went for a less detail/dirt look as compared to my last entry .. the showstopper ..
... now i'm in pondering stage as to what's next ....

jeromoo ~ hey bro! thanks for the suggestions! ... i'll go with some skin blemishes and moles i think the bump won't be so evident since i've added the film grain layer, most of the effect is gone :( ( although i did try it out ) ... plus for the color, this is what i had in mind .. sepia toning, kind of like an old look ..
as for the alien lover, i was inspired by the dolphin itself in terms of the fins and smooth surface .. the only thing missing is water .. i.e. slippery skin surface .. lets see what i can come up with ;) .. fantastic ideas i must say! :p you rock man! :buttrock:

I was just scrolling through your latest updates and thinking how your peice needed some noise or grain to keep it from being smooth, and I kept scrolling down, and sure enough, you've got it covered!
However, I have to confess, I find the little star-glow on the tear terribly cheesy. Your piece has thus far been wonderfully understated and subtle. You don't need to call so much attention to the tear, it read quite well without it. Heck, with the expression on their faces and the wrinkled you've added in her brow, I don't think you even nead the tear at all. But definitely not the star/lens-flarey thing. Just my opinion, but anyhow, looking good! :)

Aww man..... I mean... man.... dude.... Aw... You did it again.....
Looks great...
And yeah, the tear can be a bit controversial. I'm myself not too sure about.. maybe it's that I feel like it's rollong the wrong way, I picture it following the under eye bag wrinkles and then going down just half way the current position and the little freckle. Just me.
But that's not my pont.. where I was?... Oh yeah!
Awww man!! !!............

ok everyone ... i've still some very little time to make those 'finishing' changes .. please give in your vote and tell me if this is it (i hope ).... i've made a last minute change before i made it to the net cafe.. you will still see most of the alien details but not as much as before, prime focus was made on their expression, i felt somehow the eye would travel all the way to the alien's body and other teeny tiny bits like his back fin & the crown's ending piece and overall miss out on the emotion ...
yep .. couple of things are exaggerated ... i felt the need for dash of fantasy and unrealism would add to the entire piece ...
i'm taking the risk :S .. yet, hoping for the best ... ( what a mix!! :| )
damn .. getting little paranoid now ...
sighhh ...... ok ......

Beautiful! The skin textures and all the extra details really add to their character! The extra contrast you've given to the whole piece is marvelous!
The tear adds a story to the scene. You know, it looks like some kind of intergalactic advertisement promoting a new cologne called "Uplift Universe" : Guaranteed to put a starry tear in your lover's eye! :D

This still looks like it was a 3d render. Amazing, Amazing, Amazing. Maybe I missed the comment, but will it be monochromatic or are you going to color it? I've hesitated ever trying to render a scene in monochromatic first before coloring it because I'm clueless how to accomplish this well.

really good. , great kiss . agree! . i would suggest a simple retouch if time allows you.. her nose and lips can get a lot benefit if you give a bit of photoshop paint to break the nose line and lips in a more "natural" imperfect way. the better the piece the pickier we should get!
good luck in the challenge. !!!

Neville well! I'll say keep it and drink café in my favour! haha! I just love the texture of all the skin it’s so tangible, and yet soft to the eye, like watching your favourite memory of a romance in a far away dream! I love that really you achieved the best I have seen in this approach for to different anatomies and live races of the galaxy! And very difficult yet to show emotion and believed that it’s true!
And don’t get to judgemental with your work, its Fantastic!
Sing that, do some extra little pixel retouch work that only you can see it, and live happy!:lightbulb:beer::lightbulb

my entry is about two distinct species ... who fall in love with each other, but with a bitter end!
furious with their affair and failing to realise any good about a new, lasting relationship between their species, she is banished by her human kind without hesitation!
to inflict more pain, she is stripped of her clothes, shaved of her hair and finally poisoned...all this, in the hope that her alien lover would be disgusted by her appearance and leave their world forever, never to return back ...
but, no ... their love was far too strong for such an act ...
in his arms, one final moment, she's ever grateful for being loved, for completing each other ...
into the darkest regions of the heart...
into a dying sleep, she smiles ...

Neville..Its interesting to see you catch a few artists because you used monochrome only...have to say there sure is no crime in doing so..it gorgeous. Subtle little nuances in detail and tone gives this an almost entirely photorealistic appeal.

my utmost thanks once again for helping me take this piece to a new level ... many thanks especially to Jerome for suggesting skin details and a subtle texture for the alien .. that combined with a noise overlay .. which by the way was very difficult to achieve by my own, coz when i did play around with my own noise values, it didn't work out at all, so i did a little research on getting the right kind of noise without making it look too digital and finally i found a pdf which helped a lot in getting the noise values correctly by selecting the color range of that image ... it worked perfectly! although i did lower the master opacity value in order to balance the image and noise treatment ...
i'll be posting the link soon .. so stay tuned for that .. plus a little walkthrough for this piece .. :p .. it'll take a while, but i'll surely get it done ;) ....
all of you artists helped me get the best out of my work  my love to everyone!
i'm ever grateful!!
take care my friends! ..

buffichar ~ thanks a lot dude! :p as for the expression, as mentioned in my earlier posts, lots of credit goes to this site that i found -
http://www.vivaphotography.com/slideshow/couples1.html
everything was already there for me, the basic lighting, shadows, the mood .. major things that i had to change/paint was the alien lover with different facial features and other alien details e.g the fins and texture ...
Neubius ~ thanks a lot bro! :p

Very, very nice. I love the simplicity and power of the image. The lighting is terrific, too -- it really makes it seem like an intimate moment. I find it interesting that you kept the image black-and-white -- though it gives it an interesting, nostalgic feel. I like it.
Best of luck with the judging!

i-c-m ~ thanks a lot dude! :p i was pretty doubtful myself, wondering how to get the alien look but to still maintain a little 'human' in him ... but, with all the help i got from the artists here, it was worth it! cheers dude!

vmulligan ~ many thanks dude! it was bit of risk to go with a slightly desaturated sepia tone for the image, but somehow with a the 'dusty' look, it blended quite well .. thanks again for dropping by dude! god bless!

Neville congrats on this wonderful piece. Reading through the brief again it really does answer everything in a very elegant way. Is this the winner? (maybe it could have had a little speckle more colour but I am just nit picking) Well done
