Hey guys, this is my second attempt at a matte painting. My first attempt was a terrible disaster but a great learning expierence.

This is a photo I took up in Rocky Mountain National Park at a loch called Loch Andrews.

I need some help finding out the perspective and what it is that looks iffy on it. In my opinion the edge where the mountains meet the sky looks too sharp but im not sure what would fix it as far as color correction or just blurring the mask. Also the dock on the left hand side looks pretty off and I think it is due to the lack of a shadow and probably the perspective being off. I dont know how to find my vanishining point in a shot like this so any help is welcome.

hey Luke, well I have some comments , you're right about the sharp edge on your mountains and no color correction will fix thtat, you have to actually blur it alitthe bit ( just the edges )
after that, the image doesn't tell me anything , no focal point, nothing interesting to see, the values make it look so dark , not many contrast or depth , your far lights should have reflections and highlights over the lake, the left foreground persons are too dark and some how blury and sharp in some edges, the sky and the mountains does not fit , you need to work on integration there, maybe a clearer sky and more blueish , at the beggining we all want to see our works finished as soon as possible, but being a good artist take a lot of time and practice,I would sugges that you study some tutorials here and not just the technical part but the artistic part which is the most important thing to develope, learn some of the basic visual composition rules, color theory, a hint of photography and practice a lot, before doing one matte p. do rough line sketches to define the visual composition then color it to define the mood and after all that start the real matte painting, this will take you days and months but you will see the excelent result you will have.

Thanks, do you have any suggestions as to how i should modify what I have started? I'mnot sure what to put as a focal point. Perhaps a castle or something in the middle behind the cabin?

Hey Luke,

Good progress so far. A few points to begin with, light up the top of the peer and add a little illumination to the people. As for a focal point, perhaps a small town on the distant shore where the lights are. In fact you could remove the peer and it could look as though the two people are on a boat heading toward the town. Also flip it over, the eye usually reads better from left to right, like with a book, text etc, at the moment our focal reads from the people towards the lights. I'd also be tempted to inhance the lights in the sky, just a touch maybe to one side, its seems a little flat at the mo.

Thats all for now :)

Dave.
