View Full Version : Lady of the Dark Wood -work in progress
Del-riz 03-25-2008, 08:44 PM Here's a new painting I just started. My inpiration for this is my wife. She's gone through some challenging times lately. I don't know where she gets her courage and will to fight. Not only is she an inspiration to me but more so for our children. Long-story-short, I wanted to dedicate my next painting to her and attempt to capture her beauty and courage with a themed piece entitled 'Lady of the Dark Wood' - 'cause sometimes her days can be a dark mysterious forest.
This tradional sketch was created with several photos of my wife and researched reference for the amour and medieval wear. It's a mix of norse textile and jewelry fashion and 15th century plated armory design with it's gilded borders and decorative accents... I know it's an interesting mix. Keep in mind, this is fantasy!
I quickly overlayed an overall temperature tone in Photoshop and plan on selecting a palette of colours for the next step... stay tuned.
I hope you like it so far? Your comments are welcome.

Hi,
I think this is a very nice drawing so far. The front arm and hand look a bit awkward anatomy-wise however. I think the forshortening's a little off but I really can't tell how exactly. Maybe the wrist next to the hand should be a bit thicker?

The nose looks disproportionately large for the face, especially for a woman...Good piece, overall. It will be interesting to see it shaded and colored.

Thanks for your comments. I'm now making these adjustments and it's looking alot better. As for the nose, I'll shorten it a bit even though it 'is' my wife's nose.

these are rough adjustments for now. It will come together once I start blocking in the darks and mid tones.
Any thoughts?

Hi, I really like it, even the nose :)
But especially the shading on the face, if you can keep it this "natural" fantastic. (BTW I don't really know how to descripe it better then natural, has something to do with not being pixel perfect I guess)
Does that stone in the back symbolize something? I think you need a little more detail there since that is the focus of this piece.
Also I think the colours on the closest hand are a little pale and light, considering the black around it. Remember that the biggest contrasts are closest due to atmosphere depth
As a last recommendation. have some branches that reflect a little light in the foreground... it really is a hole in the black now, which is fine for graphical work but not that great for a painting where you need to convince depth more.
Lots of promise, like to see this finished!

Thanks for your comments matsman!
This posting was simply to show where I was with my progress... it's by no means finished. The intention was to post up the stages I work in. In the last post, I painted in all my darkest colours and tackled the face first. The next step is (like you said) to paint in more depth and detail. The stone in the background is actually a cloaked visitor who has just entered the 'Dark Forest' and has caught the attention of this female warrior.
stay tuned...
