Some designs for the alien and human. The alien would be a war veteran, while the human is a young officer who obviously not a war material, eager to prove himself but was strucked down. The relationship is that of a mentor-student war buddies

Very interesting start.

The second alien design is way cool, although I can't say I'm really fond of the eyebrow. :)

"Hang in there..."
The alien veteran had carried the wounded reckless young warrior to a safe pod. The war is still waging outside, but here he should be safe. Maybe.

Second scene concept. In this one, the boy had already died and the war is over. The alien veteran mourned over him, while in the background their other team mates approached them, crossing the now deserted battlefield

Hi everyone, this is my first ever CGChallenge (a hell of a nervousy here). I've seen previous challenges and there's a lot to live up to. Everyone's entry are gorgeous ^^
I want to make something rather simple, so there will be more focus on the relationship, and more time to finish it. The ones I uploaded here are still brainstorming

Maph, thanks for the reply ^^, I haven't found the right alien face yet, though the big, hunched figure with long neck on the concept scene already fits my imagination.

Anubis3D

Hey Pegahoul!

I really liked the first concept, with them in the pod. I think that angle is far more dramatic. But both of them are really nice, and so it is the alien concept.

Keep going man

Looks really good. I also like the overhead pod view. It gives an interesting view down onto the battlefield below. I'm not sure about the samurai sword. Seems anachronistic (although it's a nice shape in the composition).

with your first concept i feel the head with out teh masking would be the best one to convey emotion, thats my favourite head design there..

fine composition studies with th eother concepts..top down looks nice..this is going to sound a lil of the beat but i feel the aliens arms, are too human :D. haha..It would be cool to see a little playaround with the musculature..

anyways graet work so far

I'm making this concept when I thought alien-human-war thingy is a bit cliched. Inspired by Tarzan, the relationship is that of "mother and adoptive child". Much simpler to make and conveys more emotion (I hope).
A) is straightforward focus on relationship with no background
B) is the same as A but with city background. She's sitting on the balcony
C) is the scene where she found the abandoned human baby

Hello everyone, thanks for the replies ^^.

Anubis3D, I agree, it's my first choice since it's dramatic.
nickjsky, I'm thinking of a futuristic katana, like a light saber? So it won't look anachronistic.
LightSovereign, thanks! The unmasked alien is indeed more friendly. I made the masked one to make it look though but maybe it turned out scary. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll rememer that.
Cyberone, thank you, but I think I'll pick the first one if I'm going to use this concept.

Okay so now I have two themes which I like both. I have asked my friends about it too. Half like the first concept coz it's dramatic and cool, while the other half like the 2nd coz it's less cliched (alien-human-war is already too many) and speaks more emotion.

I agree with their reasoning. That's what I felt too. So now... what? (scratch head)
Want to make the 1st, coz it's really cool, but will I make it with only a couple of hours everyday after work? So many things to draw for a war scene, and I'm not exactly science fiction material. With that in mind, I'm most definitely going to pick the "mother-child" thing.
Even that, Is it A, B or C? I like them all (idiot... :D )

Suggestions? Opinions?
I think I'm gonna take a break while thinking over this (wait... that's not a break -_-)

Instead of picking from existing ones, I made a new one. Great, now I'm officially confused.
This one is a play on mother alien - baby human thing, but with additional elements. I want the alien semi octopus coz you need a lot of hand taking care of the baby. I also want her to look rich. The maid hidden in the shadow is human, looking longingly at the baby... who is she? dun dun... (plot thickens) ^^

Character design for the last concept, which I've decided to be the one to paint.
The alien queen costume was roughly inspired by Elizabeth I's dress.
The maid... haven't decided what her hair look like, but she's once a pretty woman, but emotional and physical stress robbed the beauty out of her. (I don't know how stressed she will look like though)

A separate artwork unsatisfyingly finished just before I read about this challenge. Talk about coincidence ^^! Now I can use this as a base look for the queen, although there will be some alterations, but it'll give the idea of what I'm aiming for.
I'll move on to WIP now

Arranging composition. Once it got to the computer, the one I sketch in pencil doesn't really work... Still kinda empty here.. and the maid's position is forced...

Out of 3 compo sketch, I like this one the most. A bit centric, but the dynamic pose of the tentacles should cover it and the background, round window to show the alien city/world should make it beautiful.
The minus part is I have to get rid of the maid and her story with it.

Side view. I imagine this one in dusk. The maid was replaced by woman in hood in the corner, she just handed the baby to granny alien.
I love the scenery in this pic, the problem is the tentacles which won't look good from the side, but those can be easily removed...
I'll detail the sketches quickly and see where to go from here.

Pearlyking, glad someone agree ^^ I was worried the compo was rather centric.
Headtrip thank you very much, the dress scares me ^^. I hope I can pull it off.
Hi JoPu, thank you ^^, I'll look up your thread later.
Thank you so much guys, it's been hard for me this week. Your supports really mean a lot.

Ah.. question. does the Queen look better milking the baby like the latest pic (is the bottle even visible?) or just holding it away. Because the Queen's hand, the bottle and the baby's reaching hand overlap each others

Thank you

This is getting silly. I can't seem to find the right background. Everytime I stroke the brush, I got new ideas. I'll just begin coloring the alien and baby next. At least the lighting is decided, so then I can just add up whatever stupid background my indecisive mind come up with.

I'd go for the backgound with the planets in the sky - I think it's both more attractive and more readable. The interior feels cluttered by comparison, and steals from the foreground.

It's coming along nicely and i'm looking forward to seeing more.

2 hours of color adjustment and all I got is a bronze baby and a candy colored queen? I was pretty annoyed yesterday. It supposed to be more earthy, realistic look. But when I look at it again today, I thought "hey, that kinda cute" ^^. Let's try again and see what happen next...

Pegahoul
04-09-2008, 12:26 PM
GaeasHerald, thanks, I agree.
Teapot-7, thank you for the suggestion. I felt all composition forced, maybe it's because the queen's position is too straight, too centric, nothing dramatic. But I'll work it up.
Tranchefeux, thank you very much! I'll try not to dissapoint ^^

I tried using earthy color (and the colors I imagined it to be), but it ended up too hot like a dusk in a desert. So I think I'm going to use this one instead. Rather plain, but with a baby on board I prefer cuter, cooler colors. (I'll tweak it more, this is still the base colors)

LightSovereign

The first colour pass is my favourite..Its only because there seems to be more variety in colour shape and texture, not neccessarily richer, but I just seem to get more out of the piece, i find your splatters of digi paint more interesting than the ocean blue look..hmm, yea the better sky for sure..anyways..its all progressing very nicely..

LightSovereign, true, true, but I just don't like the way the sky too pale and the gown pink ^^ (red is more royalty), nothing's definite yet though, I'm still searching till I get it right. Maybe a combination of both.
Thank you for the suggestion!

Neubius, thank you!

Andy, oh good, you're here too! Cgtalk award? Cool! Lemme guess, witchfinder, right? ^^
Well, actually I was going for an alien queen adopting a human baby. Though nanny is nice ^^. I'll put more emphasis on her royalty with the dress and the servants behind her.

Tired on working multiple files. If the initial goal is simple and emotional, which one should be used? (I think I know, but I like 2nd opinion)

Back to one of the original concept. More simpler, and just focus with the 2 main characters.

Hm... you have so many variations it's really difficult to say which one is better. In this case I'd say I prefer the left one (with the blue sky) because you'd have a contrast to the very warm tones in the front. The frame looks great. Can't wait to see more.

Nice concept and work on it so far! As for the color scheme, myself, I'm torn: I like the yellow backdrop because it's warmer and alien at the same time. Blue is too terrestrial and conventional... but your warm-colorted alien pops really well against that blue backdrop! (Which you knew because you designed the color scheme knowing the sky would be blue!) If you want to use the yellow, you might need to do a lot more work with the other colors and values to make it all hang together. I don't actually like the big frame. It feels too forced, an art-deco frame put around an otherwise realistic approch to depicting this alien and the baby. But that's just my take on it... Good luck!

LightSovereign
04-15-2008, 02:48 AM
Junction 2 option 2..The one with the yellow sky..Unconventional colours i found really appealing..the emotional factors will be decided by your lighting i think..and yellow i felt had more possibilities..For me, The yellow sky is the one..

Wonderful concept and beautifully executed! As for choice...I don't know. I think they both work but will harmonise better when some of the environment's colour if reflected in the skin and garments of the alien. This looks like a great album cover to me. (Madonna? Mothers of Invention?)

Hi everyone, thank you for your suggestions! Sorry for the long reply. Lost connection.

nwiz25, Jaba153, thank you, glad there's someone aside me with same opinion on yellow ^^

Multiductus, thank you. Yes, the main purpose of the frame is to focus on the characters

HornlessUnicorn, aheh... it is difficult ^^ thanks for the suggestion!

mmbenya, JoPu, thank you ^^

walrus, that's exactly my dilema. Reason why I chose blue because yellow will make it too hot (alien's already red), but lue is just too plain. I still prefer yellow though... so I'll find a way. About the art deco window, It's still a subject to change. I want to focus on the background color first. Thank you

I've picked yellow (yaaay ^^) for the reason best described if you look at her head.
Anyway, the main problem was to find out what's the best background color, since the lighting affect the objects, and I want to start detailing characters. It's about time.

Cool! I think the circular background you have now is the right choice. It's a symmetrical piece, better keep it symmetric. And circles are certainly the dominant shape in the figure, so they're worth repeating. This way it feels almost like an icon painting (with a twist).

Thanks, Minnhagen, but I feel that all of my compo is forced... maybe it's because the figure is so centric and upfront, I always have problem with depth. Here is one attempt

this is an idea I got when I felt that the background took too much attention from the characters, but if this the case, than I have to fix the lighting all over again... not that the lighting in the previous pics are right yet though

Excellent! this is it pegahoul, simple and straight to the point. An indoors setting makes much more sense.

I moved the light down so it's behind the character, more focused.

lighting problem now.

honestly I feel this image is doomed from the start. the composition's forced, too centric, not dynamic, it's just feel too stiff. didn't feel right.

I'll work on this pic till the deadline come but to be honest I've lost the mood on working this a long time ago

I'll take a break and see where this goes

Maybe I did need a break... mood is back now.

I pulled back the camera a bit. Is it better this way or the previous one? (2 pics before this)

I want a "serene, calm, just the two of them" feeling in this one (as opposed to the previous chaotic hell). In a dark-light courtyard garden

Hi Pegahoul, hope you don't mind that I took your image and tried to express my suggestions on it. The baby works fine for me, however the back shape of the head needs more volume. I can see that you want to create an intimate place for the characters, so I tried to tone down the 4 corners of the piece, desaturated and make the colors colder. It makes the eyes focus more on the figures (and your painting will be less "hot" as you said in one of your updates). Don't get discouraged because you have choosen a centric angle, depending on the mood you want to express, it can work well too, look at the classical paintings, lot of painters did want a centric composition. I really like the design of the chair too, I suggest that you try to put some similar design on the wall to echo with it. Good luck and Keep it up! :)

Great update Peter, one comment about the ball (three ball) is little weird (like levitate) about make it more big and the alien mother hold it, just suggestion though. Your update looks better.
Good Luck:thumbsup:

Donglu-LittleFish, no I don't mind. Thanks a lot. It's a great help. I've tried similar approach on the outdoor scene (greenish bluish clouds), but since the indoor one isn't as hot I haven't try it. It does look cooler, though I'm not comfortable using moss green (personal issue ^^). I'll try it later. Thanks!

about centric angle, I'm not discouraged about it, just annoyed coz I prefer a more dramatic perspective and I've been doing a lot centric images lately. (bound to be bored)

and yes, I'm thinking of using the same pattern on the wall. Thank you.

JoPu, yeah, I've been thinking about that too. I'll work it on later though. Wanna finished the certain parts first. Thanks!

nwiz5, now that you mention it, the original colors have some pink, but they disappeared as I painted the shadow XD, I'll put it back again, and make him more plump too. he's too skinny...

schizoides, really? I'll check out yours. Thank you!

Peter this is looking very good - well done! Possibly put some detail in the white cloth of her dress - either highlights or shadows? A slight disjoint between the level of detail in the top half of the pic versus the bottom half. Anyway, nicely done.

I'm gonna begin this with a large groan, coz this pic is going to fall short of my expectation, still I'm going to squeeze it till the last second

lighting's been adjusted. details will be perfected (don't know if there's time for all though)

got rid of that balls coz of weird lighting and no sense of movement. does it look weird now?

Thanks for the luck! ^^

RupertD, pattern done for the white part of the dress. It's been in my to do list but only got there now ^^

I don't know if the red part is good or not. Panic mode here (launching into all kind of curses on myself)

Fetus23, thanks for the suggestion, but I'm afraid there isn't enough time for that. I just want to work on what's already there.

Her majesty's kingdom is crumbling, her people slowly leave to find a better place. Only she and a couple of servants stayed, because it is their home, and they will take care of it, even with no hope of return to the glory of the past

Then one day, something happened. A ship unlike anything her people saw landed in their lands. Within it, an 'alien' baby in a crib, with several belongings not familiar to her.

Her advisor recognized the ancient language used in the recordings inside the plane, and deducted that this baby must've been a last survivor of sort.

The adorable baby brought life to the palace, a new reason for them to live. The queen was especially fond of it, and she spend most of her time taking care of it.

to her, she is her son, a new heir, a blessing from the sky, a sign of good fortune, and probably the new hope for her empire...

---------------------------------------
Wow, that was long. Anyway, that story came to me as I finished this pic, since it strayed pretty far from the original concept.

Photoshop, lots of random image found on the net used for reference, especially for textures, lighting and color.

Special thanks to everyone who had helped me on the WIP, and group hug for my friend at work for helping me choosing the concept. Thanks to my mom for renewing my spirit when I felt I was about to cancel this pic.

There's still much left to be desired. Learned my mistakes. Hope can do better on next challenge.
