I am wondering if anyone has experience importing IGES files
into MAYA. I have heard IGES is troublesome. I am wondering how well this works for bringing in CAD files for redering.

Thanks

Yeah i have imported alot iges stuff into maya.

The version 5 iges importer is much better you can now actually import iges files from CATIA with no problems :) but 4.5 its not possible unless you use something like cadfix to clean it up.

Imports from solidedge and UG seem to be ok from what i have seen so far.

The biggest pain when import iges files is organising your scence and grouping everything but once thats done your away.

When you import stuff the realtime display in maya has very low tessalation compared to CAD type programs so expect to see your models looking very ruff until you render them.

Well thats good news. Knowing that the IGES file of an asssembly will be one solid chunk I assume that in order to perform a function like exploded animation I would have to bring in parts as separte IGES files and then somehow re-assemble them in Maya.
