View Full Version : SubD in Unlimited vs Complete
TapioKa 04-19-2002, 02:03 AM Hello all,
Could someone tell me what the difference is between subdivision surfaces in Unlimited vs Complete. Am I understanding correctly that you can do polygon smoothing much like lightwave and Max in Maya complete?
If true, then what are the SubD tools in Maya Unlimited? I found this explanation not all too clear on Alias' website.
Your info is always appreciated.
Thanks,
cyril

In complete you have Polygons and in unlimited you have 'real' Sub-dīs, there is a polyTool cald CPS(connectPolyShape) alot of people use that. havenīt used it myself though,
.
Maya's subd's are hierarchal. Meaning you can go down several layers in the geometry without destroying the layer above it. Also each layer is a child of the layer above it so any changes you do to the higer layers are passed down. Subd's also render out at a much higher level of quality than other surfaces.
And yes you can do poly smoothing in maya complete. Can even smooth poly's with more than 4 points.

Hey Lyr,
Thanks for the info but I have another question.
Poly smoothing is not the same as Sub-d's? Or is it
just an issue of having layered history with unlimited?
Thanks. :-)

Poly's and subd's are not the same in maya. Subd's in maya are a completely different surface type.
