Hello Everyone! Nice to go into after hours madness with you again!!

Well, I read the text about the theme and I think if humans are to uplift a species that should be geckos (octopuses are more fit, but they could be too dangerous if they revolted). So, I just started drawing a nice gex girl and that's it. I just don't know what kind of scene I did, looks like an airport and she's showing you the way, mmmmh... I could start from that.
As for the human part of it I'm too lazy to think bout' it now so maybe soon...
Anyway, I wanna doodle things a bit before I start thinking about it too seriously, Last time I felt bad because I skipped that part and started the challenge with a single concept and never went back, This is, I think a really good opportunity for a crazy idea to surface, and I'm gonna give it it's due time.

I'll love to hear of all of you, have fun and take it easy so we'll survive for the next one :D

Woo.

Handlebar, So nice to see you, I said this is just one of many doodles but I'm growing fond of her, I better start drawing some ugly brute alien so I don't get stuck with her right away :D

Hi! I'm trying hard to catch with all things going on now, This is a second concept that I happen to sorta like. Please let me know what you think of it, It' is a shame I wouldn't find a good place for the gexgirl in this one but, eh... we'll see.

This is a pretty much everyday scene of interplanetary commerce: the delivering of cargo, which is always a good chance to greet the ol' pals.
I'm not too good with aliens so mine are based in cranes, I guess that's a good way to start, and they will evolve a lot still, so suggestions are all welcome...

That's a really nice idea. I like it a lot. Perhaps the composition could be extended, made wider, towards the left a little bit. But I know this is only really early anyway. I like that outfit the giant alien is wearing. Great stuff

Hi Gabriel,:wavey:

I love this mood for concepts in aliens different and yet very well balanced in appeal! I like those big aliens and their friends hanging out as regular day routines! as for the female alien I think she can be there in one table sharing café morning news! with the neighbors haha!

Hey there Everyone! I'm so Happy to see you again! I will have to gear up for this challenge, dang things keep getting in the way and I only have +10:00 p.m.'s to work on it. I think I can fit the uplifty geckos in the image, I guess they could be very useful if they can climb up those big crates and ships, and I could place the gexgirl right besides the balcony family, as an assistant of sorts, I will post that tomorrow plus the redraw of the aliens, to better land their anatomy, stay tuned!!

mdavid: I will definitely extend the canvas to panoramic and see what happens !! Thanks for the tip buddy!

Jack Zhang: Glad you liked both because I'll try to fuse em' into one as much as possible, the gecko girl would look great modeled in such style! :D

maxspider3000: Thanks For the words Yusuf, I will work hard on it, stay around! :)

Marco, Pal!!: so glad to see you! Your words are so kind! I'm really happy to work besides you again!!

Pearlyking: I hope I live up to the expectations :D Best luck to you pal! I really liked last time's suicidal toast! I could swear I posted sometime but I don't see it... weird...

Slav: So great to see you around again! Don't be a stranger buddy, I really appreciate your input.

beelow: Thanks Pal! the gexgirl has many supporters and I will try to please them even if she makes just a small cameo there... Good Luck and good times to you too :)

scala: Eric my friend, this wouldn't be the same if you are not around :D I'm a big idiot and haven't visit you yet, I'm in shame... still on time to catch up. best luck buddy!

bouboul: Hehe, It feels so good to see the fellas gather... keep in touch and best luck pal!!

elmasfeo: Checking my posts I suddenly stopped and said: ' Hey!! I know that foot!! !! yes it's the real one!!' Fernado, I'm really glad to see you took the time to visit! I hope I'll hear more of you! thanks a lot! I'll try my best...

Axel: I leave you for the last as a way to honor you pal hehehe, naaah really, I'm glad to see you around and to know you're joining too, you're getting better everytime and it'll be terrific to see your process again, don't forget to point at the lousy spots, and be sure I'll bother you with clothes issues whenever I need it hehehehe......

Not much , but hey!, the point of this all is to show the real process as it happens no matter how uneventful :D

I'm working on a more 'natural' pose for biggie here, and over that I will work the detail. I was thinking of drawing the whole skeleton first but it ended up being a big distraction, and I still plan to sleep sometime everyday, so for now I think this will work well, if you see something ugly about my drawing (except the subject himself, we're not here to judge anybody) let me know, I'm a little insecure about it still...

04-15-2008, 08:27 PM
hey my honored friend! haha LOL:lightbulb:wavey:!!

I think the skeleton idea it's good but as far as I see the neck and the anatomy's language, I thought he was more like a flexible snake like neck, and his body a bit more close to the alien part of wrinkle flesh and odd movement, since they are so big maybe they don’t move that much and that’s why the are so big? Or maybe not? hahaha...the big hand are very important, and the gesture looks good, but why this gesture? is he going to pick up the boy? Or just to say hi, and later on… squash him hahaha? this are the question that your sketch does to my way to see it so far... And I am sure the vintage 50's colors will look great in this composition...the light green it’s a must .... Or maybe not....?

Hey, Gabriel, good to see you here again. Interesting concept! Have you ever player (or seen) the game "Shadows of the Colossus?" It's a terrific game, but they also have building sized-creatures in it. Could be worth checking out for inspiration, they do their beasts really well (and as I said, it's a great game!) Good luck with everything!

Hey Gabriel, first sorry for not to be more often here :D Ok the DW is over and are not more excuses... hahahahahahaha. Seriously, really cool approach, I liked a lot the giant alien design, great!! Buena Gabriel! I'm loving the scale of it. I just saw the mom at the coffeehouse, so at ease with her children playing with the giant. It reinforces the concept of peaceful giants, very inteligent. Keep it up.

This is what I wish will be definitive linework. Say hello the gecko gal again, I think it makes scene for the scene and the line of work to have many wall-crawling employees, you'll see them in the next post climbing big crates and such.

I see there's some confusion over the action between the kid and the main alien. Well, I really hope it's clearer in this close up AXEL. hehehe :D
Well I meant it to be some sort of High-five greeting, the open palm kind didn't work well because the big guy might look menacing, and the kid like merely touching the alien like he would do at the petting zoo. I think the fist greeting looks cool but I'm not sure it reads well. Obviously the alien can only give his knuckle, and that complicates the layout, not to mention It can always be mistaken for the alien trying to squish the kid, AXEL. hehehe :D
Oh, help me please with that part!! it is very tricky and I would like to get it right before diving into color, All your suggestions are most belovedly welcome.
Joy to you.

Aaah! I get it now! hahaha!:argh: No he is a good guy now! I am not reading second intentions anymore! His and the boy's hand it's doing all the action of a good friend behaviour, and then again like they mentioned before the mom been there with the café add a better reinsurance to the whole picture! ;)
The Gecko girl is back! yay! She’s not having any café! Why that's racist! haha just kidding my friend! It’s good to se different actions in the same set! Adds better value! :lightbulb

So I will say its line art already! And keep it up with color choices already! aaaah! Why is she wearing a rope is it that morning, or to emphasize the laziness of humans, and how we abuse others best? (Gecko girl it’s already dress up) that’s why I say so haha!:wip:

Hi Gabriel! Good start on the entry! At first, I didn't know that was a knuckle from a rather HUGE alien. I thought it was a head of some sort of alien creature. I've been trying to understand the features, searching for its eyes, nose and mouth. I thought the round thing at the top centre is the eye. But after reading your description, I understand it to be the hand. But yeah, its too huge. I would have love it if you make it a head instead of the hand. More emotional impact and better communication this way. But its too early to tell here.

All the best and I'll be keeping tabs on your entry!

Hey Gabriel, cool update my friend!! :D and like a lot the gecko girl on the scene!! ( and she have a great expresion) really cool touch for your concept. On the closeup the alien hand design looks awesome. Maybe the boy need to show his face and show he enjoy and love that "littles" aliens :D And can you put some crates with "Tequila" label ?? :D Again, great work !! Cheers my friend!! ( muy chido Gabriel, vas muy bien !! )

It's real fun to watch your new thread develop. I love your beautifully drawn characters and environment. As for making the giant look like he's being friendly and not about to squash the boy, well that is tricky, yes. The only suggestion I can make (and I'm not 100% sure this would work) would be to have the alien almost perfectly matching the boy's body pose (as much as its enormous alien anatomy would let it). That might help people see it more as a high-five between both of them, and also provide a bit of comedy to the scene. Currently, because of the giant alien's pose it does not look like a high-five and I think that's what's causing the confusion.

But like I said, I am not 100% sure that would work and don't want to waste your time

Hi!
tell me please if you like the new frame, I think the wide canvas is good for the scale of the image, but I'm fraid' the the highfive scene will get lost with all those big things passing on. of course I can use colors to bring that up, and I'm already on that.
you will also see some of the minor actions taking place over the crates, they're not important at all, but I wanted to show stuff going on in that area.
Thanks to everyone! I'm glad to hear of you everytime!

The people.
the geckos are all as asistants because what I read from the uplifted species having to pay tribute to the humans for a while but I'm thinking of ignoring that so the geckos won't feel bad about it, i don't wanna get all politically incorrect here.....

Wow!! I'm really thankful for all the comments I receive, even more because I haven't post that often, just when I think no one is givin' squat abut me anymore some nice comment comes in.

DaVee: Glad you like the scale difference, I was dying in despair when that very simple concept came to me. I was lucky :)

laurentino: Cheers my good pal, glad to see you here, I worked the gexgirl's way in to the pic again, well, a tiny version of her. I like her too.

andreas-V: Thanks a lot, I really glad the hand works for you. let me know if you think the high five idea is clear enough. :)

AxelAlonso: Vintage colors? mmmm yeah I have to try it. my first color doodle was totally random. Yeah I miss some agree on it too.... and oh your social issue.... as I said above I planed them to be assistants to humans because of the book reference, but I think I will add some more equal opportunities for them too :D Oh and the lazy mom looked just sweet there and is my only way to set the time of the day at this point.

walrus: Hi Mike good to see you! Yes I have checked the colossus game but never played it (damn PS roasted days before I could get it) I'm gonna try to play some tricks to imply great proportions and distances like they did. and some big shadow blocks maybe...

Ferx: Thanks Fer, If one thing I regret is not having the guts to make em' even bigger :D Cheers busy! and I still consider the contents of the crates... that'd be cool!! and yes, I know about the face, what to do there?.. I'm too lazy to turn the whole pose around now :D

GaeasHerald: Hehehe. muchas gracias. que bueno verte aqui! I wanted to show that the kids are not just being imprudent or something. the mom served well as the definitive testament of the alien's good soul. Y' know moms :D

jeromoo: oh sorry I had you going through that! now I hope you see the whole pic and tell me if it gets clearer for you :D I added a face to face contact like the one you describe in the other side of the canvas....

mdavid: Oh man. I see your point! trouble is if that big guy rises his arm it will fill even a wider canvas :D :D I promise you I'll try that in a thumbnail to see how it works.

scala: Thanks for the visit and the comment buddy! Colors are coming real soon.

SaphireS: So glad, thank you! I think the widescreen looks better too. I'll do my best to have it done in time :)

Fetus23: So good you liked the little actions, I hope I find the time to add more, but the deadline is getting thigh for me, we'll see... Tanks!

But as of now I'm gonna redo the whole alien head. I just find it weirder everytime... the new one will be still weird but hopefully work better.

Thank you very much.

The new updates are fantastic. I love the wide canvas and geckos climbing the walls. The funny thing is, since you widened the canvas and added the new stuff, I now think the high-five thing is working just fine. (I understand what you mean about the problems of changing the pose of the giant.)

I think the pose of the boy is so well-drawn and so clearly a high-five that the message does get through and somehow the new wider canvas seems to help. Also, I think there is now obviously so many other delightful interactions between humans and other species that the high-five feature is perhaps no longer required to be so noticeable anyway. I'm not expressing myself well here, but to sum up I will say these new updates have changed things a lot and give me a really good idea of what you were aiming for. And it's really good

SteevieWoo
04-20-2008, 02:35 AM
oh that's funny! I thought it would be a problem for the high five to have more things going on than before, You make me feel relieved *whew*

I'll still try to work color so the hi five gets the atention, but this is a good poit on my struggle.

Ferx added that the Kid's obscured face could be a problem, I'll try to draw him facing the viewer, but some how I don't think it will fit well, I'll let you know :)

Nothing final at all, but I start to see a palette there, even if many colors are in the wrong place, once I get them right I will add a general shadow layer and start with the issue of the huge shadows the aliens would project, that keeps me a little nervous :D
I didn't find time to redraw the head today, but that can be done some other time before the real painting step starts. stay tunned.
Thanks and good night...

I had to edit the post to add that the right side alien has some kind of tool hanging from his hip (he should have a belt too), That's not a gun, but all of sudden it appeared tome it was a gun. When did that happen??

Hey Gabriel, really great updates my friend!! The gecko workers are amazing!! :D The gecko carrying the wire is simply a fantastic touch!! cool!! hahahahahaha  . The first pass on color works really well, like a lot the purple and blue value on the main cargo ship. Only one observation, I think the background transporter ( on purple too :) ) is a bit out of perspective in relation with the general perspective on your image ( a minor detail :)) Again, superb work Gabriel!! and cant wait to see the shadows on action :D Cheers!!

IS THAT A GUN?:curious: Haha just kidding! It looks like a tool belt or something alike, that this friendly alien should have use! But it doesn’t look like he is violent or anything like that, if anything reminds me for his body language to a turtle and a giraffe behaviour.

About the geckos and the idea of helping as you mentioned to be able to do that concept form the book, I think it’s great! I really like to see the society going on so strongly well balanced, and for the humans I like the relaxed attitude they show! I am a bit not too crazy about the uniforms from the big aliens though, but I think they offer some constant concept to the whole idea. So keep them if that’s the mood to be happy with it!:surprised

As for the colors…hmmmm I like the blocking of them but I think the yellows are going to mix with the morning shades and the pale blues? Then again it’s a new world’s mornings so could be different? …and I think you will do great on the shadows just cast them were you want them to be, and then develop that crazy sun light! hahaha!:scream:

Ok I am going back to work!:banghead:

It’s looking fantastic my friend!:wavey:

Hey Gabriel, I think the warmer colors work really well, great! I think the transporter behind the alien on first plane ( the transporter with the gecko workers :D) need some cooler tones ( the ship, no the craters in it :D), only a comemnt :) The image is really great, I like alot the composition on it  Again awesome work my friend !! Cheers!!

mdavid
04-23-2008, 02:22 PM
I agree with Fernando that some cooler tones might work better on the transporter - at the moment I keep seeing it as something confusing with the foreground. But apart from that very small issue, the overall image is coming along brilliantly. It's a real fun scene with a lot of great stuff going on in it

Pearlyking: thanks pal! I really apreciate you like it, I'll be glad to hear more of you.

Octostatue: Haha Don't worry I will probably do a nice gexgirl pinup by the end of this madness, Thanks!

Mark: thank you for all your comments and the enthusiasm, that keeps me going! I'll check those details and jump into painting really soon :)

Axel: Hahahaha :D Thanks buddy I will keep the sunshine very earth like, no big deal, and the shadows will help to get things right, as you see they don't wear as much as uniforms, just some sort of utility clothes, to keep away from a regime impression.

Jaba153: Thakns for the comments! I like that you find it muy bonito :D that's the message.

Fer: You're right , I have to chage that one maybe to more of a green, that area is giving me some trouble, thanks a lot for pointing that!! I owe you some crates too :D

very fluid, great sense of movement,
you might move the alien on the left into the canvas a little more, the negative space between him (or her:)) and the transport craft seem a little awkward.

beautiful style!

Hey thanks for the tip! that's one of the zones where I didn't care enough to fill with anything, I will try what you suggested instead ;)
About the fluidity, My first idea was drawing them to look like they were stretched from a ball of silly putty, wavy and rubbery, I'm glad you like it!

Very cool indeed. I like the way you have stylised the characters, and the subdued colour palette.

Whew, I'm still trying, I will have some busy days, so the only way this is gonna get done is using some of the tricks I use at work, I just duplicated my flat color layers and made em' darker and more blue, then I started to erase to discover the light areas to get this cell shaded look, later I will colorize the linework so it doesn't make the flat colors dirty and I will flatten it all to use as a base for the real painting, I hope I will find the right mood to finish it in the next 10 days.
I still have to change the main cargo ship perspective but I will do it once I feel more confident with the deadline.
Thanks again for all your comments! Jeff and Slav,It's always a pleasure to see you take the time to visit!! I'm really thankful guys!

Hi My Friend! I like the explanation in how to get fast the cell shading work! Experience it’s always good to share! Thanks for that! :wise:

Now about the shadows! I really like the line work, and how the shapes are showing, the light source looks good to me, still afraid that the boy looks a bit 2 little for that big hand, so maybe would be nice to cast a god ray light, not very strong though but in a more smooth way, and as for the gecko girl she may need a bit more of contrast from the big alien’s shirt so she wont look as a print from his shirt lol! Well that’s pretty much all I could saw that might need some thinking, other than this looks pretty solid and well balanced the rest!:D

good work Gabriel, this is looking very good :bounce:

maybe, if i had to crit something, i would say that the left arm of the main alien (our right) looks a bit strange to me, like out of perspective or I dont know... but hey, if he's made out of rubber (or similar), why not? hehe

I'll be waiting to see your progress when you start with the real painting :) this is going to be great!

Hi! I'm starting to paint now and this is what I got so far. as you see it's rough , but I'm still trying to find the right feel for the whole image, I'd like to leave the colors a little blocky, and as a matter of fact I'm chiseling the edges on the aliens some more since I can do whatever I want with them, I'll have to see how it works on the other beings, but I'm pretty sure I'll keep with it.

Thanks for the nice words!! that makes my day any day :D

:bounce:That’s so kuhl my friend! Really like the colors so far even if its a bit blocky yet, well I think its doing right to do the bone palette since they do seem to match well that description, and they look more ancient and big as tree could be taking ages to grow that huge...se add history to them to! haha... Although not to crazy abut his costumes yet,:curious: like I said so before, but I am sure you will turn them in an easy fix! The yellow in him, I do like it!:wise:

Hey Gabriel, looks really nice your first blocking pass on the alien, like the texture and volume sensation on the hand , really cool. I think yo can go with no much tone shades on your image to put a "toon style" touch on your image :D (como molesto con eso :D) Again, great work my friend! Cheers !!

LAAAAAAAAATE greetings from me everyone! I'm so sorry to have dropped out that way, but work lately was just insane, everyone sending little bits of work, all urgent, then some more, then some more, It was really tough, I got tired of deadlines, and as much as I like the challenge feel, I knew I would have to rush like heck to finish my pic, and It would never end up as good as it should, I see great things for this idea and I'm really glad to know many of you dug the concept too. so The best I could do to meet those expectations was to give it it's due time.

I'll move the picture to WIP forums (I hope that's O.K. with rules and all). Once I get a little spare time I will commit myself to work on it in a regular way so it doesn't drag for ever. :D

I didn't have time to look around and leave some words this time, and I really want to apologize for that, I saw some great works going and I'm looking forward catching up with all of them. I hope I'll see you guys next time and anytime in between!

Best wishes and thank you very much everyone!!.

(Me want a new wallpaper!!) :D
