Hahaha ! I was looking for your first post thumbnail and you've already posted a new one! I like the doggie alien, he really has some weird bones, that's cool!
The second one is good too, it has some great oportunities for dramatic lighthing, any of them could make a great picture.
I'm really glad to see you join the challenge again. I hope you'll have a great time!!

i did some sketches for the aliens pets.
but i realized that this scene is out of the context .... i'll read something about the Uplift Universe and then i will think in another idea.

Great expressions & characters, the pet alien is great! The human-alien relationship of dog / human (alien-pet/human) works brilliantly at conveying a great emotional connection, -the pet alien expression(s) are really fun, Great! I'll be watching your work  .

GaeasHerald, joshpurple - thanks a lot guys. I was thinking in another scene, something about The Uplift War, to make something more connected with David Brin's work, but you made me change my mind. I'll keep the pet story. :)

i really don't know what kind of design i'll do for this alien pet.
i was thinking in something ugly ... a scary visual, something that you look at it and fear it .... but actually there is no reason to fear.
what do you think guys??

HI!
I agree with you, the weirdest looking could be the better for the pet, and I'n pretty sure you can make an F-ugly monster look adorable if only you give him a warm doggie stare, you're going for small eyes in your sketches and that can work too, but maybe bigger eyes would help to better show the pet's real personality, so you can do the rest of the body as weird and scary as you want and keep the concept clear...
Going real good:thumbsup:

today i started to draw in my lunch time ... just to relax.
and i did this! =)
i'm still wondering about this alien but i tried something with bigger eyes .... i'll try that now Gabriel, maybe it works better =)

i found a funny picture of a puppy and i found an inspiration with it. =)
i changed the body's shape ... the other sketch i made looked like a bug! ... i decided to make a stronger body.
i didn't decide about the guy's face ... for now, this is the one!

BrunoCornelsen, joshpurple - thanks a lot guys. but now i started this one with the pet and i think it will be a great challenge to me. I mean, i'm not used to draw or paint creatures like that, and it's a good opportunity to learn and get some practice with a new thing. =)

hi everyone!
i just wanted to show something.
i don't know why but i started this painting with a very light grey. And i had something bottering me about this.
So i decided to start it again.... with a dark grey.
i didn't finish yet but i think it's so much better now ... it seems that the creature is more palpable, i don't know! what do you think?
anyway
i just wanted to show you that!
for me ... i'll always start with dark tones from now.
=)

Well it's just a matter of what king of lighting you want, both look good but the seccond one is better because the more contrast you add in this stage the better it will translate in color, and if you find the shadows too heavy you can always put them down a bit. anyway, starting dark always gives your work a 'feel' that you don't get right any otherwise. and it's fun too.
It's going great, the shapes of his forehead good!

ahmetekn - thanks a lot buddy! :)
Gabriel - there is a while that i paint from dark to light! but i thought in a sun illumination, something like that, and i started with this light tone. But i think, even if you want a scene with a lot of light, it's better (and easier) to put this light than start with this light. And you're right, its fun to see your drawing getting shape by lights =)
I'm waiting for your update, i'm curious to see those giants painted :)

Hey Filipe, hahahah really nice work, like your idea and the alien pet design looks awesome my friend  Nice values on the pet (use shadows and lights to render the skin texture on the alien pet too :) ) and cool eyes!! great expression!!:D Again really nice work!! and looking forward for more updates!! Cheers my friend!!

Ferx - thanks a lot buddy! i'm glad you like. i'm still trying to finish this pet properly ... but i'm really worried about the time. Today i received an email warning me about the deadline and i thought: "oh my god, time goes too fast ... and i still have so much to do". :argh:
again .... thanks for your words ... this is a great motivation to try hard to finish my entry =)

Hi Filipe,
The concepts of the Alien pet are so excellent and full of humour cuteness and good appealing potential! I really like the last shape were his body it’s a bit larger and his head a bit more small. I agree about that aliens shouldn't been scary at all! We have more reason to believe in happiness than in fear; this is in earth as from other worlds to as well :scream:

Thanks Axel ... i really appreciate your words.
you are totally right .... fear don't take us anywhere ... it's true that fear can save us from some bad things, but it blocks us to a lot of good things =)
.........................
about the new process i took
i made this gif before merge the layers!
i really thought it better!

Hey Filipe, really cool values, nice to see how the layers work on the flat grey  . Think you need a a bit more darker shadows on the bottom part of the alien, but now looks really cool my friend!! Really nice job!! Keep the good work!! Cheers my friend

You're doing great Filipe! the animation is a nice touch, thanks! and I think all the wrinkles and muscles are coming out just well, maybe his spine a little bent to the screen left, just that.
You're also geting his expression right for the concept, he's a charming guy.
Keep going with it, I know the time is thigh this time but you're in the right track, you just got to floor it now :D

Hi Filipe, I love his face its like looking at a big sweet dog! And the spine looks good for my sight haha...
about the master his position looks a bit stiff maybe could be that I don’t see the hips leaning backward as they should. Although it’s a little detail I think....other than that your values are showing great already!
laurentino
05-15-2008, 03:41 AM
Hi Axel!
i understand what you mean about the hips ... thanks for the tip!

Hey Filipe! So sad you couldn't finish on time I like it already as it is! And let wait for the color once you get the time to do it so! I remember those ugly stressed times I did my grad show last year and boy time was the easiest thing to go by like water in a rainy day!:wise:
So I hope all the projects for your demo reel are going good! And hope you can show some of them later in here! I hope to hear or see from you soon ! Enjoy life!
Take Care my friend! Axel:wavey:
