View Full Version : Another topic for anti alias with selection tool.

First of all, everyone please looks closely at the first image.

The border is very soft. When I use selection tool, I checked anti-alias with feather is zero. I fill in the selection with Alt + backspace at the first time and the result is the image above.


Now, please look closely at the second image.

I keep the selection and fill it again and the border looks very sharp. Could anyone please explain why the sharp border appears at the second time. It still happens if I use paint brush to paint over it with selection tool is running.

The basic problem is that "antialiased" pixels are actually transparent. If you
layer two of the same "antialiased" object together, the opacity of the edge will be compounded and will start to look jagged.

Try this: make a new layer, get a paint brush with 0% hardness and 100% opacity, and paint a stroke. Then duplicate the layer. The stroke looks thicker. If you duplicate the layer over and over it will end up looking like a really solid, hard brush stroke. It's the same effect with antialiasing.

To keep the softer effect in your case, you need to make a layer mask out of the circle and then you can paint all you want on the masked layer without it getting jagged. Masks are a big topic that I don't want to explain in a post but I'm sure you can learn about them using google, and maybe photoshop help.
