View Full Version : How to acheive this effect?

I found this background a while ago and was wondering how these materials may have been made and lighted:

I have modeled my version already, but my materials look like crap. I'm using 3ds Max 9 with Mental Ray and 1 MR Area Spot inside an inverted sphere. Help appreciated!!!

It looks like there are 3 materials here. A black shiny pottery type material, a red carpaint material with an outdoor enviornment map and a glowing material. If you're using mentalray, maybe try the carpaint shader with a sky based map in the environment slot, and for the black shellaced material create an arch design material that's black and has almost no roughness, and again, provide it an appropriate environment map.

Look like there's two lighting in scene... A HDRI and a direct/target light with projector map targeting from specific object like sphere.
