View Full Version : Anatomy Thread of Venuscia
Venuscia 03-23-2008, 08:09 PM Hi everyone,
Being my very first post here on the board and in this section I thought a little background info would help.
I discovered this section on Anatomy, Master Copy and Studies and was tempted in trying my hand out at drawing again after 3 years. I have no educational background with art and drawing and have mainly been self taught from reading the various Anatomy books and of course the famous 'Drawing with the Right Side of your Brain'. Although my first image is not on the actual Anatomy Lessons Series: Body Part 1 - The Head - I was drawn to it through the Art Database when looking through the various images. I hope this can count towards one head for my hopeful attempt at managing to do 50 heads in a month, studies and work willing :)
I usually do all my sketch work and art on paper but for my first head study image I decided to try my hand out at Corel Painter X and seem to be happy with my first attempt although it took me a little longer to complete it than I thought. I have done a little photomanipulation a few years back but have wanted to be able to bring my traditional work in digital form which I put on the side lines after getting married. Hopefully, now that I have the inspiration to take it all up again I look forward to updating this Anatomy Sketchbook as often as possible and look forward to any advice, critics and comments.
For my first Head Study, I have used Leonardo Da Vinci's Old Man Head Study.

Hi,
RThomson : Thanks for the comment and I realized it too this morning that the chin was a little off. :) oops
MiguelS : Thanks Miguel, the shading has been a real challenge for me using the tablet. I just hope with lots more practice it will get a little easier :)
NR43 : Hi....Here comes the next head study.....

Head Study Number 2 of 50 :)
Wasn't exactly happy with the shading this time around as my tablet and hand wouldn't agree to work together :D

Hi there,
Very nice head studies! I especially like the first one because you have more variations in the line weight which I think make it stand out nicely.

Roja : Hi there. Thanks so much for visiting my anatomy thread and the kind words. I think I still need to tweak around with the touch sensitivity settings to be able to get my line weight worked out but I think with practice, I'll hopefully figure that out :)

Ok here is another head study from the Master Series. Botticelli's Dante Head. I decided to try my hand out with the chalk medium in Corel Painter. Haven't got it just right but will keep trying out the different settings on the future pieces.

I think this one lacks some of the depth like you've done in the other ones, still it looks good.
Keep it up.

MiguelS : I have to agree with you I wasn't exactly satisfied with the depth on this piece. I think I still have to learn and play around alot more with the blends and shades when coming to colour pieces. Hopefully with a lot more practice I will get the hang of it :) Thanks for your comment.

Ok, haven't updated with some head studies since I have had a nasty bout of the flu but that didn't stop me from doing some sketches and studies :D on paper...so here they are...
The quality isn't too great of the images since my scanner refused to co-operate today so have uploaded what I could with the camera. Maybe when the scanner starts working again I can redo the uploads here.

@ Deepam - Hi Deepam!! Thanks so much for visiting my thread. I am definately hooked onto the studies at the moment and it is great studying facial features. Keep going with your studies and I hope to do a few more eye studies and then move onto lips and ears. Then hopefully some more full head studies.

Nice head studies, great bunch of noses you've drawn there! :) Eyes look good too, just watch the shape of the iris, and centering the pupil -
Good work, I'll be sure to keep checking in!

@ ceruleanvii - Thanks so much for the comments. I agree I definately have to work on centering the pupil and the shape of iris. That's the main reason I have been doing so many Eye Studies... Hopefully with the studies I am working on now the improvement will show :) Hoping to update again in a few days!

Hi Sheeba, very good work on the head studies. And some very intersting anatomy studies. As for the eye studies: try to draw them as a sphere, and the eyelids should follow that sphere very tightly. It is a very geometrical approach. Hope this helps! Keep going

@ batte812 - Thanks so much for the advice, will definately try to keep it in mind for my future eye studies.
Here is another head Study, this time from Da Vinci's Face of a Woman. Not too happy with the mouth though..... :D

nice studies you've got here, I like those noses too. The pose of the last head is a difficult one to get down. You could try redrawing it, without the stuff she's wearing on her head.
