View Full Version : The going-ons @ 3D Festival
lildragon 05-08-2003, 02:59 PM Just wanted to stop by and let you all know how everything is going here. The weather and such isn't *too* bad, much like Toronto, Canada is now I guess :). Aside from that the presentations all went well.
First off no video taping was allowed, but myself or Leonard will do some sort of write up on what happened.
The Lord of the Rings day was a blast. After speaking to each of the Weta guys it really sets you on track. Alot of you would've died after seeing the skin shaders used for Gollum. It was INSANE!!! Leigh would've been in heaven :) and of courseJason's rigging examples were awesome! But Bay's new stuff was  I'll definitely have to fill you in on his facial rigging he used for Gollum, very very inspiring stuff. He's also planning on writing a book on the subject, so keep your ears to the ground.
Matt Aitken finished it off with some great VFX shots of the ENTS and the particle system they used. Mindblowing work gah!
Victor's presentation was also stellar, and we got a sneak peak at some exclusive footage from Finding Nemo heh.
The Expo so far is pretty good, it's small but very good.
Expose is taking everyone by storm, some of the pre-selected entries were printed by Dr. Mark Snoswell and they're being swept up in a hurry. Only the speakers here got the entire set (very exclusive stuff that won't be given out again).
So all in all it's fun fun fun, I'll drop some photos in here very soon. Proton will also (when I find him :))
Much more info to come, I'm off to watch the Film Festival intro by Jason S.

lildragon, any Blender representation there at the 3d Festival?
Just curious. Blender users get involved in different 3d events arround the world. Alot of Blender users still use apps like Max as in the case of this Blender Artist shown here-

-Yeah, I'm interested in seeing quotes of Victor's comments at this event.

I was apparently a few meters away from you Lildragon, and I turned around to my group to say I was going to say hi, and poof, you were gone. Literally without a trace. I don't.. quite know how you did that :curious:, but I must attempt to reaquire the lockon and say hi to the people behind the bestest forum ever :)
What a long day though, I'm completly exhausted and I can barely deal with having to go through all of this for two more days :)
Great stuff though.. kinda small expo indeed. Nice auditoriums-setup they've got going I think.

Hey funny thing is Jason was complaining all week about being tired!, But he had some of the best presentations.
I don't have time to reply to everyone, but I'll make it brief.
Gollum's info won't likely be posted anytime soon if ever on the web really. But Bay has interest like I said for writing his book on facial rigging and animation, and he got major support from the audience ;)
We do have footage of the History of 3D evening, as I was taping with Proton's Cam, (thx bud) so you'll see some footage of that. It was a BLAST!! having a star studded lineup like that in one room rarely rarely happens, and wait till you see the pics Leo and myself took ;) The evening had the fullest capacity so far.
Tonight will surely be much bigger as we're currently prepping the awards. I've pretty much finished with the tape cues and such, so we're pretty much done. This will be taped by myself or proton.
There wasn't any representation of Blender sorry.
CGmonkey there's 18 in the set btw ;) like I said only the speakers got that exclusive set :)
Off off I go, I'll post a few more pics, and grab proton's cam card, as it's chocked full of images ;)

If you go just a few hours north of Denmark into Norway or Sweden the sun doesn't set at all for a while in the summer.
After living outside of Scandinavia for years that's what gets to me every time I go home in the summer. Drives me nuts;)

heya Tito... thanks for posting all the pics :) Need to get Jason to post some of his. That night was fun... went to bed at 9am and woke up at 3pm! Then the following night I didn't even bother sleeping... just went straight to the airport at 8:30am and slept the whole way back to LA. :surprised
I think I walked more in the last week than I have in the last year... and now its time for E3 here in LA.
So I've yet to post a pic into one of the boards... I tried to post one as an attachment but it didn't seem to work... anything I need to know?

Thanks for some awesome nights out! I'll definitely try and get my sorry ass over to San Diego... I've had some disturbing reports on the price for a planeticket though... 850-900 USD :argh:

hi guys.. thanx for the night out.. and Alex.. we did not walk for 3 hours to get the Jamican breackfast... we walked for 3 hours just to get some breakfast... next time we know where it is.. heh
I think that there is something wrong with the camera that have taken those pictures from the Australien Bar.. cause im almost white haired.. witch cant be right.. (its only gray.. and not so mutch as it seems to on the pictures)
how about saturday night.. did you go on until the break of dawn?? I fell asleep as soon as i got home.. 48 hours with 1 and ½ hour sleep, thats hard.. and it was actually an accident that i fell asleep.. cause i wanted to see the Animation Workshop show saturday morning.. but nooooo.. ofcause i fell asleep...

Fantastic event!
One thing though. I managed to go through the whole event without seeing any of you guys, my cgTalk friends. Hm, maybe I didn't have faces to combine with the avatars:rolleyes:. Compared to the earlier shows which have been located in the center of Copenhagen, you kind of felt that all just dissappeared when the day was over. We went to several bars and night clubs  without seeing any one from the festival.
Oh, well. Next year I do at least have some faces...
BTW. Thanks Jason and Alex (and all the others) for your excellent seminars!
