Chrike 03-22-2008, 09:25 PM Hi there :)
I will go for the plates 1 and 5; not 100% about the third one yet... and for a kind of sci-fi approach.
I have a question about the compositing; would be great if someone could help me out here cause i kinda canīt think about a proper solution at the moment:
Usually I mask/matte out the elements i wanna keep and make the rest of the image transparent;
letīs say in the example below I matte out the buildings and replace the sky.
Then I could just paint below the building layer so that I do not paint in the buildings themselves. Except I wanna do that obviously.
However the footage is kinda shakey and I couldnt fully stabilize it in After Effects so I cannot just go and use this method, can I? Cause the area is moving continuously and hence the matte needs to be adjusted frame by frame.
How do you approach that? Do you rotoscope that and track the movement?
Thanks!
Chris

great concepts here, I like a lot the sense of scale you have here, about your question what I would do, is try to stabilize best as I can , maybe try another software, if that doesn't work I would try to use a match moving software so I can use that 3D info to work with some 3d geometry and use the 3d blocks as matte masks and rotoscoping is a pain in the ass I know, but it has always worked as well.

Hey Christian great start! really liking the concepts here.
I was able to get my plates stabilized quite easily. If you have Aftereffects here is a LINK (http://www.videocopilot.net/basic/) that David posted in my thread. Its the 5th one down. It worked great, thou I had to do a about 3 stabilization passes to get the best effect.
I know what you mean about painting behind the plate layer and I ran into that problem myself lastnight. But what I did was create a layer mask for the plate once I had the sky/buildings removed that I didnt want. Then copied that mask to all my bg concept layers. Seemed to work alright.
I look forward to your progress!
Cheers

hey there James and Matellis!
Thanks a lot guys for the help and comments, really appreciated.
Didnīt even know that you can stabilize multiple times :D however the image gets quite cropped;
you probably pick out the frame with the most cropping and extend it in photoshop, right?
To be honest I kinda feel like changing the whole mood of the footage / concepts but Iīm not really sure yet what kind of color correction layers can be exported from photoshop to after effects. Will experiment a bit more with that as I really want it to be moving in the end :)
Thanks again guys,
Chris

I am not sure if you can stabilize the shot multiple times in the same project file. What I did was track it , render out at the highest quality (quicktime). And then start a new project file and add that movie to it and stablilized it again and so on. And then like you said, I selected the frame with the most cropping and then used that in photoshop. thou a couple of my plates have cars passing on the right and left of the frame so I am still a bit sketchy about what I will be doing with that.
Cheers!

Love what you are doing, I too have the same problem so I followed matts advice. There is going to be a lot of rotoscoping on my matte also. I keep reminding myself that its worth it.
I am experimenting like mad. I will sit down tomorrow and flesh it out. I like the blocky skyscrapers on the horizon good colour palette also.
Cheers for sharing

hey matellis thanks again for the advice!
finally I ended up extending the image on each side to get rid of the cropping through the stabilization; itīs still a liiittle bit shaky, however, I guess thatīs ok. Will need some tracking and rotoscoping later on anyways :)
thanks a lot Rich!
I think youīll be just fine in the end! I assume (or hope lol) that roto work in After Effects is kinda similar to doing it in Shake and there itīs pretty straight forward fortunately; nevertheless quite tedious :D
Hereīs the third plate Iīm going to use. Totally different color palette this time

There will be kind of a little story going on.. something like: life is worth living in the suburbs (which will be shown in the first image), however thereīs sth going on deep inside the city no one really wants to have anything to do with (second image; need to find a way to combine both influences, suburbian and city)... until it ends up inside the city close to the huge futuristic work facilities.
cheers guys,

Uh!!! thought i'd posted on this one .. amazing concepts, love the depth and scale. Always amazes me what people can do with plates that seem so uninteresting to begin with.
Hope you continue with this one

Seriously, the perspective gives me nightmares :D

interesting, love how you worked the road, great idea :)
At the moment i can feel the background begining to get a little flat and 2d, perhaps the lower wall needs a little more perspective. Also in the first one, you had somekind of stuble curved sky rail thing in the air/background, this held interesting composition would have been nice to see this element developed further.

hey Matt and hamburgerlar! cheers guys :)
and thanks again Dave for the input! how would u proceed about getting more perspective in the front part?
Initially I matched the perspective of this huge wall to the perspective of the entrance to the tunnel. However, this kinda gave the impression that the wall and the street on top go down hill; thatīs why I corrected the ceiling line of the entrance and then matched the wall again. Does that make sense? :D
Do you talk about working with atmospheric or linear perspective btw?
cheers,
chris
