is there any way to apply one material to many pieces of geometry all at once. select all the meshes and tell them all to use the same material or some such thing.

select all your meshes... and in the hypergraph right-click and choose assign...

dunno how i could've missed that... knew it had to be something simply overlooked in the hypershade.
