lospeed 03-21-2008, 09:00 PM Hello everyone,
I'm pretty new to photoshop and this is the first time i drew a portrait,
http://aycu02.webshots.com/image/45481/2004262569932025178_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2004262569932025178)
This is how i worked:
1) I made a rough sketch
2) I brushed big parts with a hard brush
3) Using smudge and blur i softened the image a bit
4) I took a soft, small brush and painted more details
5) *step 3)*
6) a pixelated-brush and smudge to draw some hairlines
Please add critique, comments, suggestions, tips and etc... so I can improve my work.

I looks proportionally and value wise good but I would recommend that you disable the "spacing" check box for you smudge brush in phothoshop. (You'll find it in the "Brushes" window (shortcut F5) then "brush tip shape" tab. You'll get much smoother smoothing results this way in phothoshop.
After that, to make it look really good I'd recommend to work it over with a harder brush with low opacity setting, preferably having the opacity driven by pressures sensitivity. Use the "Alt" to pick nearby colors and then with repetitive light strokes smooth out the transitions between colors, keep picking colors (Alt) during the process to adjust to the right smoothing color.

So if i understand well,
i need to bring more colors in my portrait (more darkning and lightning of the colors) to improve the reality of the painting ?

I'm one of those people who abhor the smudge tool, spacing on or off. At best, it is useful as a "mini-liquify" tool at a small brush size, for limited pixel pushing around.
If you are attempting to smooth/blend colors, I find it MUCH more effective to make a selection of those areas you are wishing to blend, and use one of the Blur Filters, either Gaussian, Smart Blur, or Surface Blur, depending on the effect, and amount of smoothing you are going for.
Smudge Tool BAD.

This is a first update, i'm following the hair tutorial (great tutorial), and i've lightened and smoothed the face a bit.
Now i'm going to start at the part to create details in the hair. (the hair is a bit to yellowish i think, but i gonna try to fix that a bit in the details part.)

Another update, i created more detail by making the strands which make the hair much more realistic, i was also able to fix the colour a bit more.

The hair tutorial is amazing, now i finally know after some other, +- bad tutorials, how to create nice, good looking, realistic hair.
I gonna try to bring some more darker strands in the hair to make it look more realistic and some 'points' which come out of the hair.
The only things that are left are softening the face (and bring some more color in it) and thinking of a background or a way to present it etc...

Ok,
I think i'm done with the hair, here are 3 more updates
I also made the eyelashes a bit more detailed, coloured the lips and eyes more, and lightened the face a bit:
1)
http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5001/75108738qh0.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
In the first image I made the little points come out of the "hairborder" + I added some more "volume" in the hair by bringing some locks in front of the other.
2)
http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/650/96197622xw7.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
In this update i smoothened the and I coloured the eyes a bit more (you can see some white, light spots in her eyes and I made the lips a bit more coloured.
3)
http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5209/43766693yi2.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
In the third image I finally found the right color for the hair. Something between blond and brown... (most blond)

i think the hair longer looks cooler:)

Did you use a bigger brush to make the long strands ?
because it really looks nice
i like the effect, it looks cool for something 'cartoonish-painting', Ii hope you know what i mean, I can't find the right word at the moment. For this image I'm actually looking for the as realistic as possible way to make hair for this image.
This is another update, i darkened a bit around the hair to create some shadoweffect and i tried to make the hair look a bit longer, but as I said before, i like your effect (great effect joeian), but it's not the one I'm looking for for this picture. And you were right that the hair could be a bit longer (not that much):

i think if the hair is too short, it looks like grass lol

well, after watching the image (some steps ago), i thought the same,
but just bringing some locks coming out of the hair or making some locks which overlap the face can do very much, i didn't thought of that first.
I think i'm done with the hair now, i like it the way it is now and i think i gonna keep it like this.
Now i can go on to smoothen the face and thinking of some kind of way to present the portrait.
btw, do you maybe have some steps about how to create the hair of this pic:
http://aycu37.webshots.com/image/46036/2005489625359950973_rs.jpg
??? i don't know how to start at it

So, correct me if i'm wrong:
you make some strands with a spackled brush
then you make a lock of shorter strands with the same brush (and a bit lighter tips)
and then you place the shorter ones above the longer ones
btw, you use a tablet to draw ?
since you have so smooth lines and atm i don't have a tablet yet :P

I'll try to find some pictures how I can explain what kind of skin I try to get.
Sorry for double posting
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=133&t=610801
this is really the kind of skin type I'm looking for: soft, smooth, with some kind of gland.
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=133&t=610326 (a bit like the previous one)

I love the colours which are worked out in these skins (face)

Hello everyone,
this will be i guess the final update for this portrait for now.
i will start something totally different. Working in this portrait made able to draw pretty nice hair and a human face. But it also learned me another, personal lesson (nvm).
In this update: i made another haircut, the previous update had, how must i say, too much hair... and i tried to create some gloss on the lips. Some other details are less worked out than the previous update, since i restarted from the face.
I've learned alot from Joeian, thanks for this help and suggestions.
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/7879/84013799dd2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I guess it's time to start with another subject.
C&C is still welcome.
