An old idea of mine. I think Solaris describes the way how the human race and an alien consciousness will communicate. By a reflection of the inner visions of man materialized in the outer world. So I want to visualize the planetary, alien ocean, a man contemplating and the materialisation of his inner vision. Maybe I will render some dolphins and whales swimming through the ocean waves. In short I want to enhance my image from the past.

Experiment with the modeling and texturing of the Solaris ocean. An important element of the scene. I want it to be colorful and beautiful. Done in Vue Pro: a detailed render.Preview quality.

Creating a space habitat in Vue Pro from metablobs and boolean objects. Many of them will be floating above the Ocean. Surrounding the planet is an earthlike atmosphere, so old-style zeppelins are the means of transportation between the habitats...
I want to model some objects in Softimage XSI, but I am new to the program and still trying to understand the complexities of the application. Later perhaps.

Hey Jan! Looks good. If you need any help with XSI e-mail me. It's very freindly. Amazing results with little frustration. You can find alot of shaders, and textures right out of the box. And it's a joy to model with. Other than that good work, and have fun.

Thank you for your comment and encouragement. I never worked with such a high-end application. At first sight it looks overwhelming, but I will remember your offer. Thanks again

I set myself a new task. I want to assemble all objects and characters into Softimage XSI and learn how to output the final image with the mental ray renderer. This means an intense study of the XSI host application and the capabilities of the render engine. I hope I'll manage and be surprised along the way. I want to learn something new... So let's begin

Struggling with an until now unknown application, called Softimage XSI. Pfff...
Here is a beginning of the middleground element of the final image: a window in one of the habitats floating above the alien ocean. The main character will be looking through it at the ocean background scene. The foreground will be the scene inside the vessel. So the cameraview shall be wide-angled and the imageformat shall also be widescreen. To capture all of the elements of fore-, middle- and background together. The image shows just a beginning of an idea...

Spent some time on the main human male character in Poser. Tweaked his personality and expression by morphing his head and posing his figure. His skin was optimized in the material room by adding some extra shading effects to the texture map. His clothing is a mixture of archaic tunic and modern spacesuit, both also enhanced materially.
I hope that his appearance remains intact when transferring him into XSI or Vue...By the way: he, Jason, is contemplating...

Wow! That's definately coming along. Can't wait to see it all come together. Looks like your getting the hang of xsi as well. Best of luck.

Thank you. Yes, the great challenge for me is to get it all together in XSI. I have to say i find it a very difficult program to understand. The one that is like it, Cinema 4D, is much more intuitive. The main reason to go on with it is the promise of a license and the expectation of a beautiful render by mental ray. Until now I had to struggle with the interface and the many, many sidewindows of properties in multiperspective ways. Very confusing. But I'll go on. Let me take a look now at how you are progressing...

This is the third main character in the scene. For now I have decided to assemble the project in Vue, because XSI is an obstacle. I need more time to become comfortable with the program and its deep but counterintuitive workflow. But if I have time left I will try to render the scene out with mental ray, eventually...

Not at all satisfied. But this is the triangle of the scene: man contemplating towards innocent and wise animal of water, attacked from behind by the dark anima in his soul. Maybe this is over my head. The atmosphere has to be just right...

It will like this then. Not as spectacular as I hoped. I have still a lot to learn. Composited in Photoshop of renders from Vue with characters and elements modelled or edited in Poser, XSI and Vue. A lot of Postwork in Photoshop. Without the possibility of multipass and per object alpha channel rendering it will take some time to render out and assemble all the different elements of foreground, middle- and background. And all that at a gigantic resolution. But I like the experimental and strangely different look of the scene. Now for the final stage of the project.

Here it is. Not completely satisfied, but surprised by the new kind of compositing of multiple, individual renders. I like the coloring though. Interpretation is free. An old idea of mine.
