Here is a first Idea that I had.
It's a depiction of a first date gone wrong, but in space.
and a galactic tow ship has come to the rescue.

Great idea! Excellent looking work, I dig your style!

03-23-2008, 10:28 AM
Nice ship design but one thing. Is your ship teeing up for a game of golf lol Hahaha.
though that would be a cool idea if ur going for a toon type project.
KOryH
03-23-2008, 07:53 PM
Ha,
Nope not golf this time.
It's just a big ship towing a much smaller one.
I'll be doing some more designs to show this off better.
And Yes it will be a little toony.
but just a little.

Here is a quick first pass at some character design.
It is almost guarantied that this will change, but it's fun to see how these things evolve.
the idea is there but this pass may be a bit too cartoony. I don't want to do realism, but I don't want to go too cute either.
stay tuned for more.
RoGreg
03-24-2008, 03:00 PM
hi,
lovely characters.
I hope you don't change them too much towards realism.
I really like the cartoony feel.
But that's just personal preference. Reminds me somehow of the Jetsons.
good luck to you
KOryH
03-24-2008, 04:14 PM
thanks gregor,
I wanted that jetsons feel so I am glad you picked up on that. I will refine the style a bit
but I will keep the toony feel. Once it goes in to 3D a lot will happen to make it look real so the more fun the designs are now the better the 3D will look. I hope.
stay tuned for the alien

well, I should have been asleep, but did this instead.
Here is a quick test to try and get some of the personality from the drawing into 3D. close? maybe textures and a body would help.
this could be fun to do.

Here is an in progress shot of the guy character. This is the base mesh that I will use to pose the figure and use for compositions and what not. I will also take this mesh into z-brush and detail it out.
I am still working on the alien. I have a couple of directions I would like to try.
I'll be sure to share some drawings soon.

OK here is some more work on the guy character.
I think I'll move on to the girl before doing the final detail pass on this guy.
so I can start to see them together.
I did some more alien sketches in my sketch book. i think I found something I like. Now I just have to paint him up and show it to you.

frk- thanks I'll have an alien soon... I hope. I keep changing my mind about what it should look like.
Baron- Thanks mate! That's kind praise from someone who knows color like you.
this character is one a date with the girl. He borrowed his dads rocket car and promptly
smashed in to an asteroid. they called a tow truck and the scene I am depicting
is when they picked up.
Let's hope this isn't the end of the relationship. Although the girl doesn't seem like the type
to give second chances.
It's just as hard being a teenager in space as it is on earth.

the girl model is turning out OK. But the porportions are hard to nail down in 3D.She is a tricky one. I'll post something soon. right now she has club feet and no hands. Not too
cute. I'll spare you all from seeing her in such a state.
i love your style. i really out of words to describe this but i know its going to be awesome. :wip:

absolutely fabulouso dude! :bounce: :p its amazing how you manage to keep the 3d characters close to the 2d concepts, normally there's always a slight or massive change to the 3d character..
a small tip .. how about adding a little or more gloss to the suits? :) your models 'pop' really well! waiting to see more my friend! u rock! :buttrock:

Your modeling is fantastic, but I can tell you I'm not crazy about the hair on this girl. It looks like a helmet.
KOryH
04-12-2008, 06:47 AM
yup.
100% helmet hair.
I totally agree. what looks interesting in a drawing won't always look good in 3D.
I will work on integration. I am hoping some zbrush magic will help.
I do have a back up plan too.
can you say " I am V'ger"
YEAH! i agree with nwiz25...! im alway amazed by this skill...the characters are very close to the 2d!!the girl model rocks! the expressions rockS a LOt!! HornlessUnicorn- cool. I hope I cn give you plenty to look at.

Goro- I should be doing a final layout pass soon. I almost have all the elements done.
then I will start composing and finalize the models based on the final layout.
mdavid- fom one illustrator to another. thanks!
Multiductus- I was definatly going for more atmosphere than realism. but believe it or not there is a LOT LESS stars in my painting than in the reference I found.
maybe we modern city folk aren't used to seeing so many stars?

Looks great, Kory! Terrific design on him. The tentacles feel a bit light compared to the upper body. I'm not saying the lower half should ahve the same weight as the upper half, but some thicker tentacles to match the arms a little more might be worth trying (unless he's going to be completely hidden by the vehicle?) Anyhow, great work so far. Good luck with the rest...!

So much, Iīd love to see more.
How about widening the framing a bit
to make the guy look even more lost
and give some feeling along the line of:
"The galaxy. Huge. One rock, but you hit it"
"Suddenly there was this whole asteroid belt
out of nowhere"
"So you took my car through the black hole?,
you wait ītil your mother is back!"
"But Dad!"

Hey Kory,
I like your style! Always a big fan of the retro look and combined with a cartoony feel is unique. I love the dude's suit with the exaggerated feet, the car, and the tow truck driver. The girl is cool to but I liked the other look better. I see where you are going with her though and I agree it could work but something about her look, to me, is a bit much.Actually I think it's the hair maybe just the color against the planet in the background. You have a lot of interesting elements brought together in a clever way. I can't wait to see the final piece.
Good luck!

I will be burning the midnight oil as they say.
Should be fun!!

Any way, the girl is great much better she fits right in I think.
Were you not going to have the towship somewhat in the shot?
Because I think it would be cool. I don't know maybe it would be a bit much.
I just realy liked the towship concept though wanted to see it in the final image.
Thats all I have to add other than hurry hurry don't be late!!!
And Good Luck!!!

Thanks Multiductus I like the 2D too.
It is in my confort zone.
For me the 3d is way harder to do, that's why I like it.
I actually like the way he 3D characters were turning out.
It's too bad I abandoned them.
Maybe they will resurface somewhere else.
I think they could pass for some background characters for a short film
I am working on. some images here (http://korysdiner.homestead.com/RETRO_port.html)

He was a astro-geek and she was a shapely spacley how did they end up here?
For the answer we have to go back to last Thursday LPC(local planetary calender).
She was about to fail out of cosmic algebra so our reluctant nerd let her cheat off his holocube with one condition... a date. A bit bold? Perhaps, But she was the cutest girl in school and it was his only shot.
She agreed to a dinner and a movie, but NO physical stuff and absolutely no nerd talk. He agreed.
The big night came and he borrowed Dads car, picked up little miss space hottie and off they went. Now I don't need to tell you that late model Titan x7's have loose handling at speeds greater than .27 Lsp, But someone should have reminded our young rocket geek. At .35 Lsp the Sector 7 Asteroid Beltway practicaly jumped out at him. Two screams, both of wich were rather girly,
and one crash later, all hopes of cosmic romance had been trashed. Almost just as bad for our never-gonna-get-it nerd was that Dads car was totaled. Within three minutes a Centarian tow truck driver was getting ready to haul Dads prized possession away and the angry space vixen vowed never to cheat off a nerd again. Within five minutes she was posting a full holo of the episode on her MyFaceinSpace page. Within eight minutes she already had 1,120,000 views and his Dad was on the way.
Worst day cycle ever? Wait till Monday back at Lunar High.

Congrats on getting this done, Kory! It may not be the method you started out with but you still got the point across (and I really like how her hair came out in the 2D version.) And good to hear you're still working on RetroActive, too... can't wait to finally see that!

OZ- yeah somehow I managed to get it done. May be I'll do an animation someday,
But not too soon.
Paul4wood- I'm glad you dig the story. I always try to have a fun story for my stuff. It makes it easier to get lost in the art.
I am also glad you checked out my Retro stuff. Hearing people say they like what I am doing on it keeps me going. "It will be finished." It is sorta like a mantra for me.

Most of what I was going to say has already been said so I won't repeat things here. Oh what the heck, yes I will...
Your drawing style and use of colour is superb. I love your work. Filled with humour and magic and fun. I love the polish and professionalism of your work too. I was enjoying your 3D version - it had a sense of sparkle and volume which makes 3D so much fun, but like the others have already said, your 2D result lost none of the clarity and humour and succeeds beautifully.
And your story is just wonderful
