reynard: Thanks Christopher for dropping by. The facial style of the character is something I found during the strange behavior challenge. Glad that you like it.

Playmobil: Thanks Francesco. Good luck to you too.

grafixsuz: Thanks Wayne for your comment. Hope you like the rest of the progress.

js3d: Thank you John.

hornlessunicorn: Thanks Dimitrij. I really enjoy your "Minotaur's Leisure"

SweD: Hey Cyril, it's an honor to have you here. Have you joint the current challenge yet?

joshpurple: Thanks Josh. Glad you enjoy it so far.

nochuss: Hey Steven. Thank you for saving my boots!

DaVee: David, you and Steven saved my design. I was kinda doubting about it. Since both of you gave positive comment, I decided to keep it.

JuanManuel: Thank you Juan. Good luck to you too.

SandySims: Hehe, thanks Sandy. It's my 4th time entering the cgchallenge now so I kinda know my way around. I need to save more time on modeling and spend more time on the environment and final retouch.

Dann_O: Hey Daniel, the character will be complete tonight. Hope you enjoy the rest of the progress.

thebest: Antone! It's been a long while. How you doing so far. Entering this challenge or not?

grooshka: shh.... Don't let PIXAR hears it! They will put me behind the bars! :P joking. Good luck with your entry as well mate.

Ohhh thank you Jack  it praise my ego :scream: .
I don't really know at this time if i enter the challenge or not. My schedule is a bit full, archi works and animation in preparation.
Moreover, this subject isn't really for me i guess. It is too focused on characters, and i'm not a great character modeler. and....it not inspire me. off-days. :/
On the other hand, it's always a pleasure and a personnal motivation to compete with you all.
I'll take some days to think about it. ;)

Your last upload is really great, returning on the main subject. i really like the design of the high heel.
i see that we'll have 3 weeks of pure character modeling, i already enjoy it.
i'vn't see a pitch of your global idea (i think), no ? could it be possible to know more about it ? ^^

You've got a nice start here with your first character. Keep up the good work!

Btw, the back of the boot will intersect with the leg quite strong as soon as you bend her knee (allready happens in your pose). You might consider to adjust the contour there a bit.

somethingofthesort
03-27-2008, 06:05 PM
I like your style on the human character. A few minor things I see is what other people have already commented on. The pose needs a little work, the right hip seems like you could bring it in a bit and of course the intersecting boot (i'm sure it'll be fixed when you skin it). Also, It seems like the head is floating, maybe you could hint towards a neck going down into the suit. Other than that, it looks great!! I'll keep following your thread.

JackZhang
03-27-2008, 08:38 PM
SDIMIS the best Maph: Thank you guys.

Cyberone: Thanks Simon. I love your giant panda. Good luck with your entry!

SweD: Your comments are very appreciated here, Cyril. I will try my best not to let you down.

JuanManuel: Hey Juan, the wireframes are posted as you requested.

Playmobil: Thank you Francesco. I decide to take two extra nights to fix some areas to get a better cartoony body and reskin it later.

digitaldecoy: What a great pleasure to have you here Daniel! I love your work in Expose 5 soooo much. Way too cute. I will fix the mesh of the boots tonight so they don't create much problem when she bends her knees.

somethingofthesort: Wayne, you are absolutly right. she has no neck now :P I will put it on tonight. I won't worry about this pose very much. This is just a quick turn table one, more or less for testing skinning result. I will repose her with her neo-chimp together after both characters are complete, with weapons etc. Give me another two nights, I will refine her.

Day 08 note:

I took some advice of a senior and re-shaped Tiffany a little bit. Basically increased the arm and leg length, give a bit cartoon feeling to the legs as well. I also added neck.

weighting is 75% complete. Tomorrow I shall complete her with weapon.

I am 1 day behind the schedule.

I finished the weighting. There are a few area in term of proportion have minor issue, I tried to fix them without affecting the weighting, but it didn't work.

HI JackZhang,
Great work so far.
Just something I noticed : the chimp reminds me a lot of an other chimp that was made in this short film -> Burning safari (http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=X0UmVrKC9hA) made in the Goblin school in france, which was also inspired by gorillaz monkeys. Is that why you have a squared style on this character. I would suggest you to go back to your womens style in the shape of the chimp, like grafixsuz mentionned.
Good luck in this challenge !

Nice job on all of the characters so far. I really like your style and the models are coming along great so far. My main crit would be going backa couple of characters to Tiffany. She was lookign really cute and interesting... until you covered up her eyes. Eyes are the window of the soul, and she has a lot less when we can't see her eyes. I thought she was much more rlatable when her eyes weren't hidden by goggles. But aside from that, just looking forward to seeing what sort o scenario and scene you place them all in. Good luck!

I prefer the one in the middle, i like the fluorescent green, it looks more extraterrestrial. I think the one at the top is maybe too much of a "ninja turtle" green. I also prefer the color of the armor on the last one but this is just for the purpose of helping, everything is just really great and well made...im eager to see the end result of all this. Awesome work!

SteevieWoo: Congratulations Gabriel on recieving the choice award for your previous Strange Behavior work. Let's see what you can come up with this time!

AlonChou: Too bad you aren't in this challenge. I really would expect another excellent work. On the other hand, so nice you aren't in this challenge. I have more chance to win. Muahaha

walrus: Michael, you are absolutly right. The glass is only for the turntable. I will remove it once she is in the scene.

Hey Jack, finally got my account working... Great characters so far! Only one thing, (I don't know if it was already said) I think the details on the texture of the metal plated shoulders ( as well on the ''trousers'') are not well defined, they look blured. I think I spotted a little stretching on the top-right side on the region of the left eye. Anyway, I vote for the middle one because there is a little bit more contrast color than the third one, it helps to punch out the different part of this Gubru, and I think the first is kinda deja vue.. but anyway awsome work! If you win this contest I shall split a rice with you! ;)

The Gubru model is looking great, Jack! Love his weapon and his creepy red eyes. I only have one little nit to pick: In Brin's books, the Gubru were birds. To quote from Brin's "Contacting Aliens,""Gubru resemble gangly birds, approximately 1.8 meters tall... They stand, ostrich-like, on three-toed legs. The stork-like beak has an extensible tongue..." Should this put a crimp in your plans? Not at all! Go for the easiest fix: Just don't call them Gubru and call them something else instead. You wouldn't want judging to come down harshly on your entry because you didn't get the Gubru right, but who's to say whether you got the Star Clan of the Tygll'll (or some other alien name) wrong?

Good luck with the rest of the layout, and thanks for the network invite! :)

Donglu-LittleFish One day, one day when I move out of that tinny appartment :P

Ferx: Hey Fernando, thanks for coming. Yah, you are right. It's really barbarian/warrior type. The silhouette of Gubru is inspired by world of warcraft orc warrior. I want to make the Gubru heavy, huge, brutal. Making a contrast with Tiffany and Knuckle.

walrus: I'm gonna change Gubru to Qiang. Hahaha, that's my real chinese name. j/k. Thanks a ton Michael! I'm too lazy to read books :P

CGIPadawan: Giancarlo, I don't have any sketch or pre-viz. You will see the Gubru, Tiffany and Knuckle in action next week. Thanks for following!

Cographicz: Very good point Chris, you are absolutly right. I will make Knuckle closer to Tiffany tonight.

zweiDee: Zing!! brilliant call! I will get a buckle for them! Thanks a ton!

April 17th. 3 days away from ending Phase 2. I am seriously considering making some changes to the schedule.

17th: fix Knuckle
18th: pose Tiffany and Knuckle
19 - 20th: Texturing Tiffany
21 - 22th: Texturing Knuckle.
end of phase 2

23th - 25th: Environment modeling
26th - 28th: Environment texturing

29th -30th: camera position, models layout.
1st - 2th: render layers.
3th - 5th: PS retouch first pass
6th - 8th: PS retouch second pass
9th - 10th: Modeling video
11th: submission

I might shorten the time spending on texturing Tiffany and Knuckle, as well as Environment modeling and texturing.

Nice 3d work, Jack! The helmet on the Gubrus looks almost similar to the little alien soldiers in the Oddworld games, but with more expressions. Personally I feel that the green colour is too strong. Perhaps if you introduce some pale yellow patches with less saturated greens? It will make for a natural skin tone, I think.

Waiting to see further updates!

Hmmm....

I like the scene idea.... Though it does remind me of the hiding scene in War Of The Worlds...
Can't wait to see Knuckle in it... although the filmmaker in me says he'll be in with the girl hiding from the Kun.... :)

Noted lighting and colors aren't final...but that can spell the difference between something like a "Keystone Capers" comedy scene with bumbling Kun Aliens, or a really gritty suspense scene involving heavily armed Kun Aliens.

The Gubru texture turned out really nice! I very much like the look of the last textured pose. It lets the texture stand out and work really good with the cartoony modelling I think. There are a lot of things i dont' like about those models, mesh wise, texturing wise, pose wise, etc. However the time is close now, I need to finish Knuckle and move to final render and ps retouch.

SteevieWoo: Hey buddy, nice progress so far, time's ticking, you got hurry up, or else... :P

Scala: Thanx Eric. An idea of some sort of lava gun poped in my mind while I was texturing. Donglu said the color of the lava is too saturated, takes attention away from the Kuns. I do agree with her. I will desaturate that area when retouching in PS.

I think, it would be cool to make the perspective a bit more dramatic. Maybe a little fisheye lens distortion would help to emphasize the height of the Gubru. And make sure that Tiffany's finger really sits on her lips. At the moment, you can not definetely tell if she is pointing or doing the 'shh' gesture.

Great work so far! Keep up the good work!

Hi Jack!

My thoughts on this latest WIP:

Perhaps try to seperate the different planes of depth a bit more. But a little haze/fog into the scene to make the silhouettes of the characters read better. Also, don't let it get too dark!

Hi :)

Very impressive work! When I looked at your composition I somehow envisioned the rocks as half-transparent crystalline structures - you could play with the light passing through them. I also could imagine that giving the image some "ambient" colour or atmosphere would unite the composition - I could imagine something going toward the violet range.

Anyway - just some thoughts on my part.

Keep up the great work!:buttrock:

Lambert shading - shadow/highlight pass
Ambient Occlusion - Multiply/Overlay pass

I like the new layout, Jack! However, I'm not sure what you're gaining by keeping Tiffan'ys weapon on her left hand.If she has a weapon, why is she hiding? Plus, you lose whatever expression you could have conveyed with that hand. What if, for example, you ditch the gun and put her right index finger to her lips as you had with soem earlier posts? Just an idea... Good luck!

“No…”

“Never mind. That way, let’s go!”

(Off screen voice, Tiffany.)

Today’s probably not my best day. When we were passing the Deadwind Valley, two Kun scouts showed up from nowhere. Those dirty bastards invaded our planet, capture the earthlings and sell us to other Patron races as slaves. I pulled Knuckle back behind a pile of rocks before they spot us. Knuckle wanted to take the scouts out. I gave him a sign to halt.

We can take them alright. The uplifted Neo-chimps are extremely fast in action, giving the Kun huge headache in short-range combat. But one of earthling’s secret underground shelters is only a mile away from here. Open fire would attracts more enemy and put the shelter in danger. I can not take that risk.

Hiding in the shadows we wait, silently.

I think, your final image turned out quite nice but I have honestly to admit that watching your WIP I was expecting even a bit more. It boils down to two things. First thing is, I don't think that the backgrounds works too well with the 3D elements. It looks very 2D and also very sketchy. Perhaps it would be a better idea to blur it a bit? Second thing is, your characters are obscured by the lighting. There's nearly no chance to see the lovely modelling you did on the foreground figures. The light on the big alien foes is ok but your main characters are hardly visible and that's really a shame because you did a really good job on their modelling.

But I don't want to sound too negative. All in all you've created an atmospheric scene with very nice acting on the characters. Best of luck for your entry!

hey Daniel! Thank you so much for your input! And thank you even more for believing that I could do better!

Oh well, I'm a modeler and that's the only thing I think I'm doing ok is modeling. I don't have enough skill or knowledge or vision for texturing/lighting/composting yet. It's my 3rd in year in industry. I'm aiming to pick up rest of the knowledge little by little within another 3 years.

as for this challenge, no matter what result I will get, I'm happy with it. The day me and donglu submited our finals we were sitting there and go "well, we both did our 100%. We did good".

It's donglu's first time join the challenge and I'm happy she pulled it off. It's my 3rd and I formed certain modeling style during the progress. That's our biggest achivement from this challenge and we are both very happy.

Yet, always aim a bit higher. I will do better next time. Good luck to your entry too!:scream:

Hey Jack,

Really cool work. Brilliant illustrating of the text excerpt.
The body language is all telling what can be read imho.
Nice characters lighting composition, top work imho

My only crit I don't like the "brush painted" look of the final.
I don't know if you really did paint over, or if it's just the shaders you used or what.
But ultimately would have preferred a clean CG look.

Don't like it when 3D stuff is made to look 2D 'cause then it becomes almost
pointless imho? Of course you could extract a good 3 very different paintings from
the final scene, probably?

But ultimately realise that if you wanted to paint it in 2D you could have done it much faster and in the end results could have been similar?
Just a thought hope you don't mind.

Cheers.

Hehe, finally it's over~ Now I can start planning my next work.

To Spin99: As for the the brush painted look, there are many examples:

and much more.

I'd like to humbly make some correction on your saying of "prefer a clean CG look".

1. CG stands for Computer Graphic. Mattepaitning, digital concept art, digital paintings are all part of CG. Therefore "a clean CG look" needs to be redefined or explained in a better way.

2. "when 3D stuff is made to look 2D" Let's start with some basic definition here: 3D = 3 dimensions = x,y,z. 2D = 2 dimensions = x,y. No matter what you do in 3D, as long as you render out an image or a sequence of image, that image will always be 2D. When you submit your final image, the guideline says 3636x2***, that's the information for x and y. there's no z. the only way to see an real 3D is to have a 3D projector like something they imagined in starwars. Therefore "when 3D stuff is made to look 2D" also needs to be explained.

3. "Don't like it when 3D stuff is made to look 2D 'cause then it becomes almost
pointless imho? " Hehe, in fact I know what you meant by "clean CG look". If I'm correct, you are referring to the type of renders which contains this typical result of specular.

Pointless? well, let's shoot something quick: Appleseed is 3D, but look like 2D. Are you saying what they did is pointless? That they should draw it frame by frame? Many environment shots in Sincity are 3D. Many shots in the film, which contains those 3d elements, have the classic frank miller comic look (2D). Was that pointless as well? Does 3D always has to stay as pixar/disney/ff7 advanced children/when-you-look-at-it-you-know-it-is-3D type of look?

As Zbrush was not created for only making high detailed ugly monsters, 3D has a lot of uses. In my humble opinion, the method of using 3D and showing 3D should not be limited.

Anyway, just a few cents to share with. Thanks a lot for bring this topic up. Lovely discussion I believe.

Hi JackZhang thanks for the reply.
Sorry if got you going, let me also explain I AM a newb and an outsider looking in.
So please don't take my comments seriously.

Please note one thing I was commenting but not trying to detract from your image.
I think it'll be a case of personal taste as well, whether things get rendered to look like they were painted (2D? lol) or not.

1. CG stands for Computer Graphic. Mattepaitning, digital concept art, digital paintings are all part of CG. Therefore "a clean CG look" needs to be redefined or explained in a better way.I was referring to a certain cartoon look that seems somewhat related to the likes of Pixar films. Rendered characters are created in an environment that simulates physical 3D space and this shows in the finished work (3D?)

Therefore "when 3D stuff is made to look 2D" also needs to be explained.Yes people usually refer to 3D as work that was created showing some sort of computer generated simulation of 3D space (x, y and z)

Of course this is probably a layman expression that I'm still quick to adopt.
By 2D work I'm like most people referring to work that doesn't rely on a computer to simulate a physically accurate 3 dimensional space. It might, or not, still try to reproduce it BUT by merely depending on the artist's senses and understanding of what he's looking at or imagining.

3. "Don't like it when 3D stuff is made to look 2D 'cause then it becomes almost
pointless imho? " Hehe, in fact I know what you meant by "clean CG look". If I'm correct, you are referring to the type of renders which contains this typical result of specular.Yes pointless was probably a badly chosen word there. Please realise that I was only expressing a personal opinion. Nothing to do with any rule book.

You know I think that if people can draw and paint (obviously in 2D lol) then I don't see a point in going through the strenous lengthy process of creating a scene with models textures lights and rigs to end up with something that looks like it could have been done in Photoshop. I think you're adding a huge time penalty to doing something like that, and the reason for it just evades me. Of course I'm not you and don't have your professional skill hence possibly do not understand your point of view.

I can imagine it being a big challenge and surely results are even computed to be physically accurate if compared to a painting done in Photoshop. I see many artists doing it, you've linked above even, thanks. But I still don't see the point I'm sorry.

I know I'm nowhere near being capable of producing a photo real image at this stage, not bringing that into the discussion. I just don't like the "fake 2D look", and that is all I was tring to say in my post. And again not to detract on your work or entry, which I still think is brilliant anyway :\

Hello Jack,

Just saw your latest WIP. It really looks like a winner.

A few comments though:

1) We can't see the full acting effect of the actor models. Particularly the girl and the monkey, they are shadowed too heavily for the audience to see if they are being mischievous or afraid.

2) I understand the light source (moon) is behind the actors in our POV, but maybe you can let the light bounce around some more (some NASA footage shows some pretty good illumination even from light in space or light reflected from the moon). I really think the "story behind the picture" can be improved if people can see the acting and life you've put into the models.

I understand there's no more time to fix it. hehehe.... But if you remember a few posts before, I said I was kind of torn about whether it would be a cartoony-comedy scene or a gritty dark suspense scene.

This seems to have a little of both. And because I'm more "PIXAR" than "DARK CITY" you can notch up those two comments to my sunny Pixar disposition. hehee.

Good luck Jack, this is easily one of my favorite projects!

BUt..i admit that i have my personal 5 star piece in there. And is the pose of the chimp..looking again and again at your work i noticed that my eyes falls everytime on that detail....le tell me...that chimp rock a lot and more...the pose...the lights cut on it...great...great great...than...i take a look at the rest of the image one time more...mmm...maybe the best part is the scout expressions....mmm...looking again....no no no ....the lights are the best thing....and so...after lookin',and lookin' and doin' it again...i understand that you image have no 5 star piece...DAMN!
