nice stuff , altho there was somethin i liked about the version with one of the things
coming from above, more exciting i think, could play with canvas dimensions if it would help
with the compostiton with that but anyways, just saying i liked that

Squibbit (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=77730) - Hello there Mr Squibbit. Yep, I know what you mean. I thought it was better initially with the thing coming down from the top but then I thought it made it feel too enclosed. Or something. What I'll do is do a bit more on it and see how it feels. Thanks for the useful feedback :)

Brilliant natural painterly feel..

Changed the colour scheme slightly; I think it makes it less cartoonish. Made a start on the details too. I'll probably leave the little dudes til the end because I've no idea how they should be dressed or how the heck they're holding on there.

Fortunately it's the future so you're not limited by a saddle with straps and buckles. The humans could be attached to the critter with artificial gecko-like adhesion (which is actually currently possible).
I really like the colors and the critters are imaginative. I also like the overall optimistic quality to the picture. Both humans and critters seem to be having fun.

hi buddy! Once again u'll finish ur piece before the contest will even started ;) or r u planning to make several pieces? Anyhow, I really admire ur speed and everything what r u doing. The present concept looks great, peaceful and so full of colors. I like it. And when I'm looking at it, it reminds me of children playing with hand gliders in the wind.. maybe if u add some of them it would look like a harmony of children playing with hand gliders and those who actually rides "them". Just a thought :)
Keep up the great work!

you could do a scene with more depth, maybe with more smal hills in the background with a landed spaceship back there like they just landed to have some fun with those alien creatures and maybe a little wider canvas.
looks great

Goro - Ha, I'll slow down when I'm done :D To be honest I've only spent about 6 hrs on it in total. I'm using Painter oils which are so good to use they almost paint themselves. Thanks for the encouragement!

Your work is flawless Baron. I think that the background aliens could be a bit more washed down, so as to enhance the one in the front. That's it, the only crit I could come up with.
I love how the one on the top left seems to be under a shadow casted by a cloud high above. Great artists know what happens inside and outside the frame of their pictures.
Good job.

All of your creatures are unique and beautiful, Simon. This one is no different! I'm looking forward to seeing the final result. If I have a crit to add, it would be that the humans are too small I thought they were part of the creatures head, like their eyes or something upon first glance.
But it is still such a nice and vivid piece of work!

This looks awesome already! The more details you add the better it looks (naturally), love the detail on the upper planet and the subsurface scattering on the fins of the flying creatures. I also like the curves and the sense of movement and lightness.
I agree about the humans – but I’m sure you’re not through with them yet. Anyway it’s fascinating how everything crystallizes more and more.

I don't know if this letterbox format is helping at all with this image as far as scale goes. It could be that or the composition is just not as strong as should be, I am leaning towards the format of the image though. I can't put my finger on the problem though. The image flows nicely. It is beautifully rendered still. Colors are good and I still like it.

Got to love Painter Simon. - especially when it's used as well as you use it. I'm still looking for the 'superspeed' setting in mine, that must be included with your edition. How the heck do you turn in such a wonderfully rounded image so quickly? Simply breath-taking.

Yes i noticed the first pass aswell..how many passes had you in mind anyway? haha
I see you removed the shrub, it does tidy the piece up very well. Is this all sans reference?..because i am loving the lighting of the creatures underbelly, a soft shadowy green. Its incredibly realistic..Way to go Simon

The Creatures and the scene look fantastic. my only crit would be the people.
they remind me of little kids who put a rug around there knecks and run around yelling im superman haha. that and snot nosed Harry Potter fanatics. The people also seem sort of emotionally detached from the creatures more like the creature is a toy rather than a living being. Maybe u could consider losing the capes and have the main person in the forground rest his head down on the creature like hes hugging it rather than just riding it. for example you ever see a kid lovingly hug a teddy bear?
Any who im loving how this is coming along. Good luck :)

LightSovereign - Just one pass to go! This weekend, hopefully.
I used two references for this. One for some of the cloud textures and one for the field (although the field one was so tiny it wasn't really useful). Everything else just sort of evolved in my peculiar imagination :)

Minor critique...the two planets are lit inconsistently with the rest of the scene. The upper is lit from the left and the lower is from the right a little. Also the lower planet, by its shadow side, looks like it is in front of the sky.
BaronImpossible
03-28-2008, 02:36 PM
KOryH - Cheers, I've got an idea about the riders, I'll try it out at the weekend
nickjsky - Thanks for the crit. The left side of the right-hand planet is actually meant to be dimmed because of the distance haze on the horizon rather than another light source. I'll see if I can make that clearer.

Sorry about the last post, just trying to interject a little humor. Every time I look at this piece I'm somehow pulled to the left abit. One thing i noticed was the painting goes from dark to light, starting with the left sides clouds and foreground and being fully lit towards the right. Maybe it's no big deal. Just an observation. Fantastic work by the way.

Sigh...So lovely! I would abandon my own entry now, if I didn't really want that XSI license ;)
Is that really a square aspect ratio, or have you just cropped it for detail shots?

nightwoodwolf - Thanks v much
sasquatch70 - No probs, I'm a Christopher Walken fan too :) Yep, the light to dark is intentional so that the creature disappearing out the frame on the left doesn't lead the eye away from the focus. I think it would be too much if everything were bright.
tkier - Thanks!
ScottC - Go for it, and good luck! (I wouldn't know what to do with an XSI license if one landed on my head, but still :) ) And it's an almost square aspect ratio, yes :)

I only miss something/somebody on the ground (now even more when you omited the little tree)...maybe some children too small to be able to ride these beasts and who envy that the older children can enjoy it or parents of the riding children sitting on the meadow and worrying a bit about their children (but only a bit because they know that these creatures are even safer than Volvo;) )
anyway pleasure to watch this picture and good luck

Hey simon, i have saved your last 2 steps..I feel the second to last post (b4 close-ups) has the better sky..
The clouds were sharper and had a more rough texture, which i found more appealing..to me it seemed more natural and vibrant rather than the softer approach for the latest..
I don't know if you agree, but it I feel it has stilted the artwork somewhat..
Just thought i'd share that observation :D

LightSovereign - I know what you mean about the clouds, I noticed the same thing. Basically I needed to smooth out the bulk of the cloud but leave the edges sharper, but it didn't work out. If I can be bothered I might rework that aspect, we'll see. Thanks for the input!
RedThirteen - Thanks, appreciated
Neubius - Initially I used a big oil brush to block in the main colours. Then all I used was a standard round brush with low opacity and plenty of grain, with pressure sensitivity so that I can blend existing colours as well as put down new ones.

Beautiful image, and your pace of drawing is astonishing.
The only thing that is bugging me is that planet in the upper left corner. It doesn't seem to be perfectly round (or maybe just the clouds in the foreground play tricks with my eyes).
Anyway, best pic in this contest so far, definitely a winner.
Good luck!

Admiration is natural and deserved, up and until a certain point. The following words are in defense of a majority of less experienced and less certain artists who are still struggling with this challenge and its interpretation. The work of art shown in this thread seems unquestionable, but not viewed from alternative perspectives. The only comment I have to give is about something essential that is missing: a deeper insight in the probable relation between man and aliens. What I see is a beautiful and perfect rendering of a naieve and mindless riding on horses disguised as flying snaildragons. I am looking for a riddle, a puzzle. That is what is absent: a question mark! Apart from that: it is perfectly done and shows a harmony of color and composition. Now let us look at what other thinkers come up with...
Greetings,
Thalassos

nwiz25 - Thanks, glad you like it
Thalassos - Thanks for the input! I tend to like to leave it to the viewer to assign their own interpretation and to imagine what events lead up to the scene, and even what might happen next. I suppose if you want a riddle, it could be, "How the heck to these guys get up on those creatures' backs?" :D

Actually I looked at your entry on my home PC over the weekend and I didn't see the seemingly over saturated foreground colours I got on my work monitor. It did seem a little strange when judged against the work in your portfolio.

Crazy good !
i am wondering how those fantastic creatures can just float in the air. fantastic feeling. No wings at all. just an unknown energy.

great.
Maybe they've "gas sacks" - organs filled with hydrogen or helium (which is rather rare but it's fantasy anyways)? Having said that - this image is definately one of my favorites from this contest - magnificient!
I think painterly works are a bit underapreciated around here in favor of "photorealistic" photoshop art - but unjustly so.
The best of luck in the contest!
Dimitrij.

nwiz25 - Thanks v much!!
MartinNielsen - Thanks!
yakonusuke - Glad you think so :)
walrus - Cheers, Mike! :) I've only just got back home and I'm able to see your pic on a decent monitor - those expressions are cracking! I bet it was so close between us - if the wind had blown in another direction you would have scooped it :)
scala - Good of you to say so, thanks!
HornlessUnicorn - Much appreciated and your comments and encouragement helped. How do I feel? Suprised, mainly, and pleased of course! but at the same time I'm aware I'm not suddenly a great artist because I won a competition - I've got ****loads to learn and it's a long process
Ferx - Heh, I might have to settle for some orange-juice tonight :) I tell you what, though, the thought of me on a judges panel like this one cracked me up :D :D Talk about a small fish in a big, big pond!!

When you get a comment like Thalassos's that means you went to a league up. the piece is so good that it will start to get more profound analysis than the average cool comment.
love it!

outstanding image and well deserved price. As mentioned by everyone; Great colors and lightning combined with a nice hudson river school feeling. Not to mention the approach: it´s allways an eye candy to see what you skulpt out with some dropped colors on a screen.
cheers, fahrija

Baron, congratulations! . sure winner. great work you did and not just that ..great support and feedback. especially your last comment in my thread :)
One thing to say . The simplicity of your piece against crazy amounts of detail and FX made its way up! that was lovely!

Congratulations, Simon!
It is said that one of the marks of real art is that it looks natural and effortless, it is definitely the case here. :)
Hat off to you, and thank you for your advice in my thread. :)
