Here's my conceptual sketch done in Painter.
I decided to go for a simple concept this time. Here, the concept can be about a rescue mission; the alien pilot rescued the stranded humans and aliens from something (maybe an exploding ship); or; its an abduction.
this should be sweet. great sketch jerome!

HammaJamma: Hi there, thanks for commenting!
chilombiano: Hey Daniel, I plan to do more concepts of the spaceship. Trying to nail down an unique look for the alien spacecraft. As for the concept of the painting itself, I like this one, so I will go for it straight on.

I've widened the canvas, revised the ship design and added some extra elements to give some story to the scene. I consider this step as my final line art and I will begin the painting process soon!
As for the story concept, I've settled on the rescue theme: the alien pilot rescued the band of humans and aliens from a strange place and during their escape attempt, they were surprised and assaulted by a school of strange space jellyfishes that are comprised of rocks, and energy tentacles.

Good to see you here, Jerome! Gorgeous job on the background! Although I think you could expand it further: it's feeling a bit claustrophobic for a flying scene. Have you picked out a color yet for your ship? You probably already have ideas, but I'd bet orange would look great against that landscape. Good luck!

Judging by what I've seen so far I think I will have to keep a close eye on how this develops! Excellent sketches, cool concept.

HornlessUnicorn: Hi Dimitrij, thanks for dropping by!
Walrus: Hey Mike! Long time no see! You might be right about the piece being a little claustrophobic for this kind of concept, so I'll expand the canvas and see how it goes. I'll widen it too to make it feel more cinematic. Orange ship sounds perfect for a lifesaving vehicle! Great tips there, Walrus! Thank you!

Hey Jerome ! Long time no see ! ( since Journey Begin ;) )
Your color palette and background is really already awesome. I'm ok with walrus about a orange tint to boost your volumes and focal point. I notice a place too for some "dark desaturate violet" touch.
May be you can win with the deep by adding antother spaceship with the same design, more down and little. ( under attack ? lol )
Good luck

I've widened the canvas following Walrus' advice. I've left some part unfinished because I'm going to add some clouds later which will cover some of the areas. Still need to fix the tone of the overall depth, will sort it out later. Feedbacks are welcome.

Jaba153: Heya Didier! Thanks for your kind words. I love 'em old masters style definitely, but I also want to try to keep it loose too and not too stiff. Hope I can accomplish that.
MasonRoberts: Heya Mason, nice to see you again since Journey Begins! thanks for your comments!

joana: Hola minha amiga, Joana! Thank you for watching! Bom Dia!
medunecer: Hello Marco, thank you for checking it out! But I am not that fast. I like to try to take my time on this one while the contest last.
beelow: Heya Bryce. That's definitely a great idea. I implemented that in my new update. Is it wide enough? Thank you for your comments, mate!
chilombiano: Daniel, are you STILL waiting in the office? :)
mdavid: Thank you, Mark! I am definitely going for orange! The color is synonym for life guards (or was that red?).
Tranchefeux: Hi Eric, thank you for checking it out! :)
DeeVad: Hey there David! ong time no see since The Journey Begins! Oh, you think some part will be great for some dark desaturated violet hues? Ok, I shall try it out and see how that turns out. Purple goes well with yellow! Thanks for this idea! Another spaceship? Yes, within the context, it is plausible to have another lifesaving ship to rescue more victims. Will see if I can fit it all in later. Thank you! :)

This is a wonderful painting so far. This will be very intersting to see how you handle the lighting of the alien rock/jellyfish around the ship. again, this is really amazing so far, I look forward to the finish. The expression of the humans is what I am waiting for, and the way you characterize the rock/jellyfish's mood (or intent) upon the human/alien group in the ship. The choice of red is bold and brings the ship right to the front while still remaning dark, allowing for good contrast later to make it a focal point when you add the lighter values.

Painting the ship and her passengers. Here, I painted the pilot and its cockpit. I plan to add a co-pilot at the backseat. Wondering if I should make it a human or alien.. most probably a human.
For the ship itself, I plan to add more well-worn textures later in the painting stage, especially with scratches caused by the flying rock jellyfishes.

The painterly-posterly-style of the image feels somehow both old and movie-like to me, like science-fiction movie posters of old. And that is all good! You have your own style but the feel of it, to me, has the mentioned connection.
Going with the neo-dolphing and chimp looks like a very good choice to me.
BTW are the humans inside of the same family? The men look like brothers and the woman is not much different.
This is really coming together so well, and I'm loving watching the stages of this one. I don't have any crits or advice to offer just my encouragement :) Looking forward to the finished article :)

LightSovereign: Hi Marley, thanks for your comments. Yeah, I'm forcing myself to be very patient while painting. I have the tendency to become impatient and go for the simplistic routine, but this time, I am training my own discipline.
Ramitxon: Hi Ramon, thanks for liking it!
Sleepyghost: Hi Niko. Yeah, it does certainly reflect the points you mention. I do like the old style because they feel so classic! Classic Sci Fi all the way! Thank you for confirming my choice of replacing the random aliens with the neo-dolphin and chimp. I do not really have the human characters firmly established in mind when I paint. I decided just to let the stylus pen guide me in creating their characters and their personalities. I'm just the audience in this one! :) So, after seeing the final look for the humans, then yeah, they all must be family!
Pearlyking: Thank you for your continous encouragements, my friend! Appreciate it!

Your painting with evolved/moved good, the bottom is well managed. If
I can deliver an opinion on the vessel, I think that you should dice
saturate the color in the shade and to be less dark with the back, to
be more realistic with the environment. Good courage for the
continuation.

When painting the planned alien rock jellyfishes, I find that the adding tentacles to the aliens might clutter up the painting by too much, so I made them tentacle-free (Maybe later I will try a smaller variety of tentacles instead). I also made the 'rock-jellyfishes' into an alien vessel. When they fly in front of a source of light, the bio-translucent rock that form the outer wall of the alien vessels reveals the alien pilot within.
I am still working on the rest of the alien ships.

great work, thumbs up!!!

04-17-2008, 06:06 PM
The rain would have been overkill. As it stands its an exception work.
My only crit would be that all the action is centered around the middle. The alien jellyfish may benefit from more randomness. But, that is a very tiny critique.
Otherwise, top to bottom, subject to execution, its an admirable piece.

Wow, you finished that up really quickly! Looks great. My main comment would be that I'm not sure what the big blue/white burst is for on the front of the ship. It's become the main focal point of the iamge - it's the brightest, coolest spot on the canvas, so my eyes tend to skip over everythign else and go right to that point. It's pretty distracting, and takes the attention away from everything else in the scene, which I don't think is great for the rest of the piece. But that's just my thoughts on it.
Cheers!

I gotta hand it to ya, this is looking really amazing! :)
I like how the light passes through the rock creatures so we can see a bit of silhouette of the creatures, which also makes sense for the tentacles ( a little shorter than I imagined).
This peice gets me thinking about what happened to upset these little guys. I like that this is a rescue ship, and not just some stranded ship trying to escape. It gives a bit more story to me, like what may or may not have been left behind (ship or character). The rain would be a lot of work I think. For a question, what is the girl with her hands on the glass looking at? Lastly, I am glad to see you fixed the rim between the two "windshields" to have the angle on the left like you had the right, it wasn't showing the form correctly before. Now it looks much better. I'm going to have a hard time catching up, Awesome work! Love it. :)

Thank you very much for the needed feedbacks and crits. I'm wondering what else to do. I need fresh eyes to spot the things I overlook and can improve on!
Hornless Unicorn: Now I am back to the tentacle thing. Raspberry jellyfishes! The fruit that stings! :D
Ferx: Hey you are not the only one thinking that. Didier pointed it out for me as well at office. This suggestion has alot of merit! I'm gonna apply that when I get home.
mdavid: Hi Mark! Thank you! The idea of the translucent alien vessel comes quite out of the blue. Its really fun to just try to let the painting evolve on its own.
Donglu-LittleFish: Thank you for the kind remarks, Donglu. Yes, I made my own custom brushes for this. However, for the smooth and reflective ship, I use the default Photoshop brush. Thanks for telling me not to add the rain! Too much salt spoil the soup! :)
Argopo: Thank you for your feedbacks, Jose! How do you mean by more randomness? Add more of them? Or put them not too close to one another? Thank you for liking my work too!
MartinNielsen: Yes, everyone is telling me to stop adding anything more. Thank you, Martin! :)
walrus: Heya Mike. Its not truly finished. It's 'finished' for the extreme critique stage part where everyone gets to tell me what does not really work. The bright blue burst of light at the bottom of the ship is actually the ship spotlights, which they use to scan for survivors. It is really quite bright so that they can see things better, they are rescuers after all. But if you say that it is too distracting, I'll try to tone it down! Thanks for this good feedback, Mike!
HornlessUnicorn: Hi Dimitrij: No problem, I will see how I can improve the chimp. Thank you for pointing that out.
shauncharles: Thank you, Shaun! It is a good question about what the girl is looking at. The original purpose would be that she is looking into the space, the place of their salvation from the attacking rock-jellyfishes, desperately hoping that they will make it safely. But since this doesn't really read so well since we cannot see the space in this angle, the purpose becomes moot for the viewers. So I'm going to make her stare at the nearest rock-jellyfish instead (as suggested by Didier as well). Adding the rain might obscure the details too much. For instance, I would have to paint the splashing rain droplets on the windscreen thus obstructing what is inside the ship. Yeah, I spotted the design mistake on the rim there. Hey, we have plenty of time left in this competition, so please do not worry too much about it. I'm going to use the time left to fix and improve this painting. Thank you again, Shaun! :)
Didier: Hey man, thank you very much for your continuous support and critiques. I really agree with your reasoning to tweak the color for better blending. Toning down the white light inside the cockpit is truly a sound idea! Hehe, Thanks for liking my strawberries! :)
On to further improvements then!

Hi Jerome, That's brilliant man, fantastic work!. I have to say something though, I think maybe the ship is not contrasted enough from the far background to give the impresion of flying at high altitude, maybe you could lighten up a bit that backgound, also I must agree with Walrus about the blue flare, I find it too big and distracting and the horizontal glow disturbs the composition. I know I'm a total jerk as your image is wonderful and full of nice details, but you have still time to end a winning piece.
Strong image!...the background is icredible and the lights are very well done! also the vehicle design is interesting and original. well done!!

It looks so slick all through, brilliant ship design... I'd comment though, if I may, that some elements might look better if they stood up from the background a little more? Truly superb entry anyhow!

Here's a before and after comparison. I've tweaked the background tone and colours, making it lighter and added warm blending tones in the sunlit area. I've also tone down the ship spotlight, reduced the size of the blue flare line, improved the chimp, made the girl look at the rock-jellyfishes in front of her and other minor details like adding scratches to the ship. The new details can't be seen in this small version, so I'll be posting the single full version shortly.

mant-Raz: Hi Przemek, thank you for your comments. I decided to go for a more simple ship design to complement the simple alien design. So that none will look superior over another. Just my own theory.
sasquatch70: Thank you. I like to paint electricity! :)
Ramitxon: Hi Ramon, thanks for great suggestions! I've toned down (lightened) the background to make the foreground elements pop up a bit more. I've also reduced the blue flare at the ship's spotlight. Again, great suggestions! Thanks!
OZ: Thank you, Fabio! Glad you like the ship design.
harachte: Hi Raul, Thank you too. I've improved the BG. Hope this is better!

I really like this new version a lot better. Nice work on those last fixes. Only remaining comment I have is that the reflection on the front viewscreen feels a bit too solid and opaque. But aside form that (and I'm not even totally certain about that one point) I'd say it's done. Congrats!
Edit: ooops, i was posting my comment the same time as you were posting your color options. I still like the original: The green really looks nice in the composition, it's interesting, it makes it feel like a planet. And out of the 2 green compositions, the original has the rock-jellyfish darker, which makes them feel more in the scene foreground where they should be. So I like the one before you made other tries at the color. Sorry! :)
Anyhow, nice work.

Hi!
Nice improvement since the last time I ve seen this thread, I really like how you change the strong white background and the hard contrasted color change to something more soft and smooth. And the reflection is a perfect add. :applause:
My favortie are the 3 and the 4 but it depend how you want to tell the story, what you wanna tell.
Anyway it's a beautyfull piece of art! Good luck!

Awesome image, Jerome! Just awesome. Love the changes you made. As for the colour versions it's very difficult to say. I like the original and the other variations as well. From the new variations I probably like 2 and 4 best. 4 has a very nice warm feel to it.
But the original one is also good...
Again - very beautifull image! Congratulations!! It's amazing...
All the best, Dimitrij.

walrus: Hi Mike, thank you for your quick response! Yes, you are right about the reflection being to opaque, so I've tone it down quite a bit. Thanks for that useful pointer! As for the color I've listened to everyone's comments so far and will try to blend certain colors that work with each aspect of the painting. But I'm keeping most of the original values for the ship and the rock-jellyfishes. I'll be posting my final image tonight!
Jaba153: Yo Didier, thanks for all of your feedbacks. I've tried your suggestion from our msn conversation this morning with further experimentations. Hope the end result will work.
tkier: thank you, Tom.
SuperXCM: Hi there, Simone. Thanks for your comments! I've blended the colours that work and hope they will come together well.
HornlessUnicorn: Thank you very much, Dimitrij! I'll post the final image tonight and hope you like the new color combination. Do let me know if you don't. Thank you again :)

hey buddy! :p your work is alive and kicking .. some serious ass :D :D :D :D
about the colour variations which, by now i guess you're pretty much done with the final image ... but off the record .. i think i like 3 better ... mainly because the scene has blended well .. especially with the ship :)
we look for the same thing when it comes to hdr rendering, that the model has to blend well with the photograph (background), to make it look like it's really 'there' and not out of place ..... ( i hope made some sense  ) ... me really looking forward to your final image! :p

I vote for the original one. The contrast between the cold color dominated foreground and the background dominated with a much warmer palette gives definitely more depth to your image. As Walrus pointed out: the darker rock-jellyfishes make your eyes focus more on the rescue ship which is the center of the attention within all the visual elements. My only suggestion is that you might try to give the yellow light on the foreground rock-jellyfishes a more greenish tone, it would synchronize with the green on the rescue ship.
You have done a great job! :)

I vote for 2 and 4. They are stronger pieces than 1 and three, both have a greater sense of unity, hence a stronger tone. Really talk out the relationship here, find out what your feeling, figure out what your characters are feeling. number 2's purple hued palette suggests a slightly colder mood, yet ripe and majestic. 4 is a bit warmer, and to me provides a sense of ease and warm experimentation in terms of relationship and char. interaction. It's also the most atmospheric and believable of the four.
good luck
hope that helps a bit
-marcel
Hey Jerome, a difficult call :D Think the colours on (2) puts a nice outworld environment on the concept, and like (4) too. Maybe the back ground jellyfishes needs a rim light ( or some traslucens) to separete a bit from the background and looks more floating on the atmosphere, only a comment :) Again, terrific work, really awesome!! love the whole concept !! :D Cheers mate

Yes, the reflection is much better, and that she is looking at the danger. Toning down the flair, or blue light is nice, as well as a little bit more detail in that area. You know, the warmer atmosphere is beautiful and very skillfully done. In a way it gives a greater contrast to the blue light up front. However, I liked the BEFORE image landscape being a cooler temperature because of the mood it made. Especially on the right side. It looked like they needed to be rescued from a harsh environment, an "alien" environment. The AFTER image is more pleasant and warm, true, only it says something different about the story. The beautiful sunset is a very powerful symbol, make sure it doesn't contradict the feeling and mood of the characters predicament. :) So, I like the AFTER...except the change of color in the background landscape. Excellent work!

Something bad happened down there on this strange seemingly uninhabited planet. They received a rather urgent call for the rescue ship to be summoned down to the surface. The victims: A Neo-Dolphin and a Neo-Chimp, with their human and alien chaperones. The human is their sister. The brothers, along with an alien pilot, made quickly for their destination. They found them hiding in a cave. The Neo-Dolphin was badly hurt and unconscious. The chimp, looking dumb-founded, kept exclaiming “They are coming, they are coming”. Their sister was really scared. As for the other alien chaperone, they could never make out its expression at all. They quickly got onto the rescue ship and attempted to fly away.
Before they could reach beyond the planet’s atmosphere, a swarm of rock-like jellyfishes suddenly appear before them. Powerful jolts of electricity lashed out from their tentacles. Some of them even rammed the ship with their ultra-strong rock walls. What exactly happened here? What were they doing down there in the first place? Will they survive?
Blah, I am no good at writing stories.

Ivy00: Hi Linda, you were not too late. I've taken all of your opinions into careful consideration and finally decided on suitable combinations. Thank you for your help!
artizakO: Thank you for your vote too, Reynan!
nwiz25: Hi Neville, thank you for the positive comments! Yeah, I know about those compositing rules. I've worked on digimattes for feature film and I can say the same thing about that albeit in a different manner, but same thing all the same. Thank you again, Neville! :)
Donglu-LittleFish: Thank you Donglu, I've retained the original color tone for some aspects of the artwork like the ship, and the rock-jellyfishes, and also a small part of the BG. I decided not to make the sunset a green colour because its a little too garish in my opinion. Thank you for your suggestions! :)
radio24: Thank you Marcel! 4 sure is the most popular of the bunch, so I've included it in for the sunset area. Thank you for your reasonings too! Appreciated!
Ferx: Hi Fernando, thank you for your suggestions. I've added some slight touches for the rock-jellyfishes at the sunset area to make it more translucent. Aside from that, I think I better leave the rest alone. Thank you so much for the positive comments!

hey jerome, i love your piece but i got a serious peve with it right now. the space ship's top most fins are being cropped off. i think it would be better if you extended the image a wee bit right now it just looks kind of wonky because thats the only part of the ship that is being cut off.

Slav has a good eye, the ship was so close to being complete. It does lower the humans in the cockpit below the center of the image, but I don't think I would add to the bottom of the image. Adding black to the back fins was a good move, it stops our eye from going off the page in a way. Also a good move raising the rock jellyfish to fill that space. AH, the bonuses of finishing early. :)

Back to Work in progress. We still have 2 more weeks to go for the Image category, so I would like to try to make it better. After being away from this painting for some time and come back with a fresh eye, I felt something is missing from the painting. Maybe the sense of threat is not strong enough? Maybe the characters are not expressive enough? The ship is too simple looking?
I will try to spend the remaining days left to reexamine the painting and try to improve it. For now, I'm adding more rocky-jellyfishes that truly attacks the ship.

I've been thinking on how to make this better. Instead of the white reflection on the glass of the ship, maybe it should reflect a more orange-pink reflection given it's background. I know it's supposed to be underwater; possibly you could add some air bubbles, especially coming out of the back of the ship and on the sides where the "fins" are propelling the ship. Just some thoughts. Great image, and love the scene tremendously! Well done.

Ha! I just noticed that this image is not set under water! Sorry, haha. I would still alter the reflection on the glass though, and maybe add one more reflection of the jelly fish over the piloting alien, b/c that one seems like it is close to the glass. Sorry about my goof; it just seemed like it was set underwater at first to me. Thanks.

Damn nice work man, I really like what you did with the clouds and the sky, keep up the great work

It is going to be tough to make this even better than it is! The only suggestion I have is to try and make the main characters more punchy.
Great work.

Here's the latest addition and refinements. I've added lots more rock jellyfishes. I've tweaked the ship too: the sunlight reflection on the glass, the reflections of the rock jellyfishes, shadow under them, deep gashes they made. I've also added a new co-pilot behind the human at the back of the ship.
I've brightened up the scene slightly.
Is it much better now? Hmmm...

Slav: Hey Slav (minus the E, sorry about that typo! My bad) Thank you for you kind words and forgiveness! I've improved on the entry, do you like it better?
Minnhagen: Thank you, Mats!
Nickillus: Thank you, Nick! Haha, swimming with dolphins is still cool! Thank you again!
TCPortfolio: Oops, my bad, sorry for making you think it is an underwater scene! I've toned down the white reflection of the glass... agreed it was too hard looking. The reflection you thought was missing from the other rock jellyfish, is actually because I just added it. Now it is there in the latest piece. Thank you for your great feedbacks!
nmcelmury: Thank you, Nicholas!
John Keates: Hi John, i know the main characters in the ship are not punchy enough. But its quite hard to see them already. Oops. So I have to try them more readable from a distance. Or are you refering to the rock jellyfishes?

Ooops, I stopped looking at your thread a little while back because I thought you finished it. It's looking really nice and I like the addition of more rock-jellyfishes, which now seem even more of a threat. It might be nice to have even more, very small ones off in the distance, swarms of them in the upper left.
There's one concern, though: I was showing off your thread to some frieds last ngiht and we were looking at it and talking about it. And here's what we decided: The area of the strongest contrast in the piece is the bright red rock-jellyfishes in front of the brightest part of the sky. It's got bright values, it's got a lot of contrast, and thus it draws the eyes mroe than any otehr part of the picture. The humans and other main characters are subtle and muted, and here the eyes are being pulled away to a relatively unimportant passage. I'm not sure what to suggest - make them less red? Make the sky dimmer? Brighten the characters? Make the sky cool and pump up the warm colors on the ship and occupants? - but I wanted to point it out as something to think about. Good luck!

This is a really good looking image! I like the toned down reflection and I like walrus' idea about swarms of the threatening jellyfish in the background. However, I do like the image the way it is...I'm kinda torn between the two ideas. Very well done.

Walrus: Hi Mike, that's a very good observation there. Yes, I also felt that the focus is lost somewhere in the sunset. So I tweaked the painting again and yeah, it works. Thank you for your very useful crits! Much appreciated! I've also added more rock-jellyfishes in the horizon.
TCPortfolio: Thank you! I hope my next update will be more to your liking!
I'm going to go for the final soon. I'll be quite busy after this, so no more tweaking.

Here's the third and hopefully final revision. (Revision: more rock-jellyfishes, dimmer background and red rock jellyfishes, brighter ship interiors, some small fixes)
Story (from previous post):
I hope this will be the last revision unless any of you spot some mistakes I overlook. I am getting busy with other works now and will not be able to continue further with this. I wish you all the best with your entries, my fellow participants!
i think its truely done. i cant really thing of any way to make it better. awesome work here!

This is so well done, with refinements and careful considerations along the way to make it even better. Though I am a sucker for great landscapes, it is true that more rock/jellyfish solidified the threat. It makes sense to have a really dinged up ship with more scatches. A co-pilot in the back is nice too, to fill in that space and add more alien/human interaction. Again, I love your piece. Great work, can't wait to see your other work you are working on now. Take care, and thanks for the inspiration.
Hey Jerome, the revision looks great! For sure the ship looks in a more danger :D I think the electric rays of the jelly fishes need to be more brigther and neat, except the rays of the jelly fish attacking the front of the ship and maybe some of the jelly fish charging electrical power to all of its body or glowing brighter for a inner body part, but are minor details :D , perhaps more a wish than a critic :D. I really like your image and the great enviroment on it, superb work my friend! And for this time no beers...... better .... yes! wine!! :D a lot of bottles of wine !! Cheers!

Alright, alright, I'll stop now!

That's lovely, Jerome! Congrats on finishing. Thanks for posting the larger image. I t was nice to see a lot of the small details in context, like the cracks in the viewscreen that i'd never noticed before. Nice work on all the little bits of lightning too... heck, nice work on everything, I'm just appreciating new (to me) details. Glad you added more rock jellyfish, too - they really add to the threat, and make it feel more plausible that the ship would even encounter them. (It's a big sky, after all!)
Anyhow, great work, as usual. :)

Hi Jerome,
Great Colors, really strong composition values, and like Eric said, the 1sth I see uses perspective color in this thread, that’s awesome you can see the evil jelly fish rock aliens in all views, and make your imagination wonder of what will happen and how they end up there, the characters inside the ship, are all a good design for a team, like each one fits anatomically perfect in the design! Great details again!
:applause: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#) Congratulations!
