Haven't attempted to enter a CGTalk challenge since machineflesh....but I'm going to give this one a shot.

I'm going to be making a short film (I dunno....2 minutes tops) that takes place in a spaceship somewhere out in space. I haven't nailed down the details...but I'm thinking it's going to take place after the hull has been breached by some type of sentient creature. The film is going to be about an encounter between the last living member of the crew and the alien.

The mood I'm going to be trying to create is one that'll be really eerie...I'd like the overall feel of the piece to be dark and mysterious....as if it were a missing scene from "Event Horizon" or some other horror flick.

I'm super busy these days but I'll definitely be working hard towards getting this one done :D

I'm looking forward to your progress :)
I loved Event Horizon's mood, and setting. Your short may be what the film was actually missing :)

Cheers

Ok....so I think I'm pretty close to nailing out my story idea. I'll be hopefully posting a very rough animatic soon as well, so you can see how I'm planning to visually set this up.

The story is overall very simple...the title "Matrioshka" is the name of russian stacking dolls (you know, the ones where you open the doll up, and there's another one inside...then you open that one up, and there's another one inside etc etc...an image can be seen here: http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/images/matrioshka/matrioshka_1a_10part_all.jpg). The reason for the title is because it is metaphorical for the alien creature in the story (the alien wears several layers of "disguise").

Here's basically the plot outline:

Please note, although this is a relatively elaborate explanation of the plot, it's only going to be 2-3 minutes. This will be more evident once I get the animatic up.

Opening shot: Exterior

We slowly pan in towards some kind of space station slowly orbiting a large planet that looms in the distance. The opening credits will be appearing during this sequence. As we get closer to the station, we see there is a small spacecraft docked to the side of it. As we get closer to the spacecraft (really close at this point), we see there is a medium sized puncture hole in the side of it, as well as some scratch and tear marks around the hole.

The camera pulls in through the hole, and we hear the rushing sound of air decompressing out through the hole. The interior is rather dark. There are flickering lights and debris scattered throughout. Despite the dark setting, we can see blood stains on the walls, and other such signs of distress.

The camera pulls through the room, and towards a well-lit doorway, near which we can see a man lying on the floor, wearing a spacesuit. As we approach the man on the floor, we can see that he's still breathing. However, he's clearly injured, and he's having a hard time getting oxygen (due to the decompression of the chamber). His breathing is very restrained and he looks semi-conscious.

The camera rests beside the man for a moment, peering past him into a long dark hallway. We here rustling in another room. A few more moments pass, and we see a large figure slowly emerge from one of the rooms down the hall. The figure is fulling concealed in a spacesuit (similar to the one the man lying on the floor is wearing), and is moving very slowly.

Once the figure emerges from the room, it slowly turns towards the man lying on the floor. The lights in the hallway flicker. The figure begins walking towards the injured man.

The man on the floor sees the figure approaching him. Thinking it's one of his comrads, he wearily calls out "M-morgan?? Is that you?"...the figure doesn't respond. "What's going on Morgan? Did...you kill it?"...

The figure continues walking towards the man, eventually stopping directly in front of him. The figure slowly bends down in front of the injured man, and proceeds to remove the injured man's helmet. The injured man begins shaking in fear, saying some un-discernable things amidst his quivering and weakened breathing. "What are you doing" he pleads.

Once the helmet is removed, the figure (whose head is concealed behind the space helmet....which will look something like this: http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/space/station/briefing/spacesuit/spacesuit.gif), leans further towards the man, as if studying his head. The figure then reaches down and removes one of the gloves of the spacesuit it is wearing. As the glove is removed, we see underneath of it a human hand, being worn like a glove over a thick mass of gooey flesh, covered in oozing slime.

The figure then reaches its appendage towards the man's face, slowly caressing the side of it. Unable to move, the injured man simply reels back in disgust as the glove-like hand slowly slides down the side of his head

The figure pauses for a moment, as if contemplating its next move....and then it reaches its unmasked hand towards the man's neck, digging its fingers into its side. We cut away from the up-close framing of these shots, and view the scene from a distance....we hear the screams of the man on the ground and are able to see the dark figure looming over him--but no details. Cut to black.

Cut back in. We now see the figure standing over the lifeless body of the man. The figure is holding a flap of fleshy skin. The figure reaches towards its helmet, pressing the button that retracts the visor. Despite the camera's distance from the figure, once the visor retracts we are now able to see the figure's true form. It's head is covered in small, globular eyes, amidst a range of pulsating, fleshy, inahalation orifices, all visible under a thick mess of semi-transparent ooze. We watch as the figure raises the fleshy sack towards its head. We can now see that the fleshy sack of flesh is actually the skin from the injured man's face. The figure proceeds to pull the flesh over its head, wearing the man's face like a glove. The figure then enables the spacesuit's visor, covering its head once again.

As the sequence comes to a close, we watch as the figure (who is quite obviously now an alien in disguise) approaches the exit hatch of the spacecraft (the hatch of the spacecraft that leads into the spacestation it is attached to). As it nears the security checkpoint device, it raises its hand, pressing a severed finger its holding against the fingerprint verification pad. We hear a robotic voice say "Welcome Dr. Streiger" as the hatch opens, and we watch as the alien (still disguised in the spacesuit) slowly enters the next room. Cut to black.

Bahaha well here's the animatic....feel free to laugh at how terrible my drawing skills (or lack thereof) are! You might need to read through the plot synopsis in order to understand what's going on, because my scribbles are pretty awful.

There are a few shots that I may extend or shrink, but overall I think the timing is pretty good. And this animatic is approx 1.5 minutes, so it's right on target. I can imagine that extending a couple of the shots might bring it up to the 2 minute mark....but that's not a problem.

Love it so far. Perhaps there should be some cuts on his face? Having blood run into one of his eyes, and having it a little more swolen than the other could make for some interesting facial expressions. Not nessesarily swolen like a boxer has hit him-but more just like a blood vessel has burst from the pressure of having the helmet break?

I was watching ALIENS again this weekend, and immediatly thought of your animation when the salvage team finds Ripleys ship. The music...camera work. And thats just from your animatic!

Cool bro thanks for the comment :)...the only thing is that he'll be wearing traditional space-suit headgear in the final...similar to this: http://www.skycontrol.net/UserFiles/Image/Aerospace_img/200611/200611esa-swedish-astronaut-iss.jpg (see the cap he's wearing inside the helmet)....that'll also be so I don't have to deal with hair on his head.

And the reference I used was actually William Shatner....I didn't want the final model to look like him, but I referenced his proportions.

Were you not able to upload your animation through cgtalk? the image uploader? I've been trying to do it myself without much success. I see you posted yours through your own webhost. From reading the rules it seemed like we would be able to upload directly through the uploader using a .flv file, but it's not working for me. You got any info on that?

Time is going to be really tight for this contest, because I've also got University finals coming up in a week....but I think I might make it.....I've only got about 10 more shots to go!

Thank you everyone for the kind words! They are what keep me moving along :D

I'm currently past the shot where the face-ripping begins...so that means I'm almost done the "main" sequence. My ultimate goal is to get ALL of the animation/rendering done before June 1 (ie...in the next week or so)....so that will leave the first 10 days of June to do audio editing, the "30-second" re-edit, and finishing touches like compositing tweaks and such.

Like I mentioned, it's going to be tight because I have 2 major Uni essays due in the next 2 weeks....work deadines, etc...but I'm sure I'll be able to budget time accordingly. Wish me luck!

wow...this is one of favorites...it looks so freat...tell me...how you did work the lights?

Hey...if by "work the lights" you mean the flickering...it's just a noise float applied to the multiplier channel :D...so it's fully automated.

Btw....here's a progression showing exactly how I'm doing the compositing....hopefully this is helpful :) I've kept the number of passes to an absolute minimum...so most shots only have three passes---beauty, ambient occlusion, and rpf (for depth/velocity channels)...the rest is purely comp work.

I love how, in your final grading, the image gets a kind of purple outline in some places....almost like its being filmed off a TV Screen. Definately pumps up the 'realism' and feel of the shots.

Good eye! Yup...that's chromatic aberration...basically a bit of RGB bleeding in different directions...I got the idea when I was browsing the animation WIP section here on CGTalk...and noticed that someone had added it to their animation--and it really gave it that "something else"...so I stole the idea ;)

WOW is the first thing that came to mind, whilst browsing thru the images..i love the whole ambience of the corridor..it really is creepy. STRONG artistic direction, can't wait till its all done and dusted.

Have to say i had a little giggle to myself when i saw the images of the astronauts broken helmet..is as if its a naked gun moment when the camera man zoomed in too close and broke the glass..DOH!!!

Anyways, congratulations on a fabtastic effort so far!!..

Im wikipedia'ing it now! (chromatic aberration)

Are you running a separate layer slighty out of sinc with the rest, grading it differently, and adding in a blend between them? Ive only recently dabbeled in compositing, so im trying to learn from the masters! Its just such an awsome effect!

ivanisavich
05-23-2008, 06:52 AM
Hey mate...

The effect is extremely simple to achieve....an example of it would be as follows:

1) Duplicate your beauty pass (placing the duplicate overtop the original)

2) Colorize your beauty pass however you wish (for example, deep red)

3) Set the blending mode on the colorized pass to "difference".

4) Scale the colorized pass a tiny bit (ex, 101%)

5) Set the opacity to something fairly low (30-40%)

Voila! Now it'll give the appearance of a slightly offset red/green channel.

There are also other methods which work for all 3 channels etc, and plugins that do it too.

Hope that helps :)

Well I don't know the exact number of hours I spend on everything...but I try to budget properly. When I have work to do for MAKE or school I don't really work on this (or at least, very little)....when I have time off...I work on this like crazy....so in the end it all balances out ;) (ex: I had the day off today so I spent all day working on this project....and now it's 4:30am! haha)

Hey all...so the last shot I have to do is the first shot, which is the establishing shot of the spaceship....here's my modelling so far on the spacecraft that will be attached to the space station.

Just a few hours work....it's all basically cylinders and tubes and planes :)...you can see a little bit of greeble in the center, which will be mostly veiled in shadow but will add that little bit of extra detail in the dark areas.

Software: Photoshop

This was submitted earlier in the form of a video link from my webspace, but I need to upload the "official" version to the CgChallenge video thing....so here it is again :)

So I think the modelling for the spaceship is about done. Now I just need to model the space station and bridge that will connect to the ship (as well as the super-fine details on the ship, like the hole punctured in the side).

This model sits at around 350k polys...

Pyke
05-27-2008, 05:30 PM
Awsome man! I love that design...very retro, but with a feel like an old blimp.

I love the 'rudder' detail at the bottom of the ship.

So...the ship is basically textured, and the space station it's attached to is already modelled....which means that all I have to do is texture the station....put them in a scene...add all the effects and stuff and finish the shot....then all the shots will be done :D (excluding any revisions I make)

Btw...this is rendered with mental ray...and takes about 1 minute to render.

Ok...so I said no updates...but I'll at least post this one.

It shows the difference between the face texture before, and the new one.

I think the new one definitely gives a greater sense of urgency because he looks more injured. He also doesn't have those funny eyebrows, or the excessive specular on his face that was making him look waxy.

Alrighty! Here is draft #1 of 'Matrioshka'. There are some minor technical tweaks I'm sure I'll be making before the final deadline...but otherwise this represents the quality of the final film.

CGSociety is partially down due to a fire in their server building (which means I can't upload this to their servers)....so I'm temporarily hosting this on mine. The only problem is that the Sorenson compression on .movs tends to have much lower contrast than it does on .flvs....so this version doesn't have the full contrast it should. Not a big deal though.

Also, the final resolution of the short is 960x540, but the challenge rules state that the final entry must be uploaded at a resolution of 640x480...so this version is much smaller, and letterboxed.

Hopefully you enjoy! Also, warning to those who are slightly squeamish...this does contain some graphic content :)

It had the perfect balance of 'what is that'....and even when you saw the alien, it still had a moment of 'wait...what IS that???'

So here is Draft #2 of the finished version. Several minor things have been tweaked based on some feedback I received. Mainly:

-entire spot has been slightly brightened, because some people using CRT monitors mentioned it was too dark
-desaturated some of the excessive suit color in the 2nd last shot
-details added into doorway that we pan by in shot2
-blood smear added to hand scanner in last shot
-tweaked some audio cues that were too loud during tentacle-reveal shot
-cropped off excessive black video at end
-fixed some black frames near middle, and cropped off a few of the black frames at the beginning

The glitch was awesome... The only thing missing in my opinion is some blood on the access door controller (he presses the cut off hand on it).

--- edit --- sorry I just watched the update.. :) blood smear is awesome.

Other than that its looking fantastic. Can you give us a rough estimate of how many hours it took you to do this from storyboard to compositing? you seem to have set a new benchmark :)

Cheers.

Can you give us a rough estimate of how many hours it took you to do this from storyboard to compositing? you seem to have set a new benchmark :)

Hmm...that's a tough one but I'll try to break it down....

Modelling: a few days...environment took a couple days to model + texture, same with characters. Exterior shot of ship took a couple days to model and 1 to texture/render.

Animation: there weren't any shots that took more than a few hours to animate, although i did go back to a lot of them and tweak them after seeing the first render pass. But usually they took about 1 full day to complete each (including compositing)....there were 24 shots in total that I animated and rendered out....but I didn't get to work on this project everyday so I was usually kicking out about 3 shots/week.

Rendering was pretty fast....no GI was used (soft shadows were faked with ambient occlusion)....so I was usually able to see a first pass of render results within a day.

Compositing was also straight foward. Most of the trial-and-error work was done for the second shot (the pan through the doorway)....then, once that shot was composited, the rest of the shots used it as a template....so in my after effects comp, all I literally had to do was a "replace footage", minor tweaks, and add in any additional passes (blood, and other overlays) and the shots were ready to go. Then of course, as I progressed through the project I tweaked my grading and did some other tweaks...but they were all fairly minor.

Sound editing took a couple days. I usually get a "feel" for sound and don't like to take large breaks....so it was all basically done in 1-2 days, with the day after that used for tweaks. I had originally done some sound design in the first animation test I posted, but that was later redone for the final version.

So....if I were to estimate the total number of hours worked on this...I'd say around 150-200? Spread over a period of 2.5 months...I think I budgeted time fairly well...

Thanks man!

The voice in the intercom is a modified text-to-speech clip. The app which I used to convert the text to speech can be found here: http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php. The initial text-to-speech output was then modified with a "mechanize" filter, as well as some reverb and echo using Goldwave.

Hey everyone,

So here is my first draft of the trailer. I still need to add in:

-accompanying text
-necessary foley sounds
-end Title, and other text info ("Matrioshka" "A film by Tyson Ibele" "Now Playing" or whatever)
-keep working on the music....add necessary effects to each transition (ie...swooping sounds as we pass into the corridor, etc)

http://www.tysonibele.com/Main/Animations/Matrioshka/trailer1_Lg_Prog.mov (15mb with sound)

Let me know if the little flashes and cuts throughout are too distracting....I want to give it a very hallucinatory feel....but don't want to give the audience a seizure, if you know what I mean :D

I love the flashes. Very 'Fight Club'. ;)

To add to the hallucinery feel, what about fisheyeing the lense slightly? Not massively, but it could be quite 'disconcerting' to have the lense fisheyed in some flashes, and back to a normal lense. Just thinking out loud tho. ;)

Im really looking forward to your MAKING OF. I would be interested in seeing a breakdown of the first zoom shot, through the ship.

Second pass of the trailer....did a lot of tweaking/re-editing/audio work. I think it's getting closer...

Also I've decided to do without the text throughout...I figure it'll be more mysterious with just the title and "now playing" at the end.....adding "catch" lines in the middle would take away from the creepiness I think.....

Let me know what you guys thinks!

Hi Tyson, great job on this, but I feel this new trailer is a little agressive in it's cuts. Too many short cuts with little-to-no transition, I must say I found it a little disjointed.

I would suggest if you have time to render some new footage from different angles, to get some of your trailer footage that way. Maybe because your short is, well, short - it feels like this is a trailer of a trailer! It is fantastic job overall - i especially enjoy the hallway shot with the door opening - but do you agree with my comment? Maybe it's just me :)

I might do the different angles thing...and on my next pass of the trailer I'll be taking out some of the cuts at the beginning....but overall, the "trailer of a trailer" is the nature of the beast (ie...making a trailer for a short film that's only supposed to be around 90 seconds) :D

Hey all,

So here's the current state of the "making of" video....2 changes I need to make are:

-in the "modelling" section, the swivel-view of the head model is cut off by the subtitles
-in the "lighting" section, the viewport is also a bit cutoff by the subtitles
-add some light background music

Everything else I think is done....let me know if it's informative enough, and if you could understand the audio! (I included subtitles because I had to talk really fast to fit it all in 1.5 minutes)

Hey, really nice work. Mind if I ask what kind of system do you use to make this on?

And about the passes, like the ambient occlusion, how does that work? (lol, perhaps I am asking too much, if u got link for somewhere to explain it can work too)

My renders are taking ages to get anything decently done.

Hey, really nice work. Mind if I ask what kind of system do you use to make this on?

I'm working on a dual core AMD with 2 gigs of ram. I have access to other machines but this is the one I did all of the main work on.

And about the passes, like the ambient occlusion, how does that work? (lol, perhaps I am asking too much, if u got link for somewhere to explain it can work too)

Ambient occlusion approximates distances between objects with a monochromatic gradient (black = closer, white = farther)....it's basically a good way to simulate soft shadows. Most renderers now include some kind of AO system. I used mental ray for this film.

Quick question that I'm slightly confused about....the "deliverables" section of the rules state that for video entries, the following must be submitted:

• Finished Video (via CGUploader).
• 30 second version of trailer for initial judging. Followed by a maximum of 90 sec making of material, followed by full length Video.

Does that mean we submit one copy of just the film alone, and then a second copy of the film accompanied by the trailer and the making-of? I noticed some other entrants have just been submitting the video with everything combined (without a separate film-only submission). Any ideas?

JurajMolcak
06-16-2008, 01:45 AM
hey Tyson, I am in the process of finishing my entry so I am not going to type a lot now. Just wanted to make sure you know you suppose to have all videofiles in ONE FLV file for judges. Administrators will display only one video file - probably the last one you uploaded as FINAL. So there should be something like - Trailer (break) Film (break) MOf (end)... try to search around last pages of FAQ thread to make sure.

Amazing short, and killer making of feature!

Im only just starting to get into the animation side of MAX (currently in ArchViz), and your work is definitely an inspiration!
Hell, as we speak I think im sucking up your webpages bandwidth and downloading all your tutorials. Sorry. :)

ONTO THE ENTRY! The thing I love about this is that it works fantastically as a short, but feels like it could be a scene from something bigger. Im not sure where the story could expand to, or where it came from-but its definitely there! The idea of an alien clawing off some poor scientists face, and wearing it like a mask, it disturbing, freaky, and freaking badass.
I love that you never quite get a full on shot of what the alien looks like. Just these hints...out of focus pans, and horrid sounds. Even tho it has a 'hand', somehow I dont picture it is a bipedal creature...but rather this mass of tangled veins, sinew, muscle, and flesh. Kinda like turning someone inside out, and running them through a grinder.
I am a massive MASSIVE fan of cheesy b-grade horrors like The Blob, and The Thing, and Slither. I love the cheap thrills of those movies..seeing someones head explode, or some get eaten..horror movies that are made for the fun of being horror movies. I think that your short captures those moments amazingly.

Like I said, Im busy attempting to get into animation, and will look at your work as a constant source of inspiration!

I think that this challenge has 2 clear winners in the individual category, and I definitely dont envy the judges!

Well done on a short you can definitely be proud of!

Pyke! Thanks a lot man! Your comments mean a lot as you're a super talented CG artist yourself (I'm a little jealous that I don't have access to a camera...as I would have loved to try some match moving shots like the ones you did).

And I'm glad the intended feeling of the short came through :) Was definitely going for that "show you enough to make you want more" feeling. It's kind of weird having this as a "short film" as it seems more like a short sequence from a larger piece (although I'll agree that I'm not sure what it would be about ;))

I should have the final version uploaded shortly....I've been procrastinating but now I've gotta get my act together!

Miyamoto: I just used max's default lens (I believe it's somewhere around 45) and then added some lens warp in AE (using the bulge distorter).
