View Full Version : alien fish skin dude wip
hello I have been working on this for a few days and its pretty much turned into an attempt at making skin. which as you can tell by the pic I totally suck at.
any comments about the model I would like.
any comments about the texturing, especialy on how to make it shinier and more oily, I would love.

Heh he looks really cool so far, except he looks like he is glowing a little. I don't know though whether you meant to make it look like that or not. But that was the first thing I noticed about the model if ya wanted to know :] I like his little "tribal" paintings on him though ....
I think you really nailed the fish kind of look with the model, especially the eyes and lips...
Meaby add some gills behind his jaw or on his neck.
Nice texture, how'd you get a diffrent color on both sides, or is it colored light as well?

JIII: Here is that skin I was talking about. Unfortunatly it is DarkTree :(
the two colors is pretty simple when you think aboout it.
it is a fusion of two fusions, both have a falloff in the base channel and a fresnel in the blend, just with two diffrent colors you get two diffrent colors, ohh and its in the luminence.
vestanpance.
boo hoo guess I will have to make do with what I have, But I am thinking aobut adding scaly thingys to him as well.
an experment with scales that I did, of course it looks like crap because I seriously need to redo my uvmapping.

i like mr scale...looks cool.
how'd ya do the texture then?
i also like someones idea about gills...would be cool.
and get eye colour to go with texture...
personally i like first one also...but as you rightly point out needs wet sheen look to it.
i think the bit under the nose and between the lip is to wide personally...

lol, hey vestan thats the skin i used on my worm, although the specular was a little to high
Click for teh worm (http://www.metafex.net/imagehost/worm.jpg)
yeah the mouth needs to be brought up a bit.
That is about twice the size of the normal gap between the mouth and nose.
The scales were prett simple.
its a two layer shader. one with my base colors with the scales at 50% in the bump map.
and then the head is duplicated scaled up by .01.
to 1.01 of original and the scales are replaced in the bump map but transpanreny is also turned on.
isntant scales.
will try working on gills later.

argh...frustrating
cant see any of the images u mention in this thread JIII...
cancel that, now i see them  i guess there was a temporary problem to get them from metafex.net when i first watched the thread.
anyway...
me i like it :) i like the color scheme (and the "tribal" kinda tatoos)u used in the first pic, would be nice if combined with the scales of the last pic. the only problem maybe about the scales, is that its "hidding" a bit the geometry details. maybe u could combine 2 differents materials on the head ? one with less bump around the eyes and mouth for exemple, and keep the scales for the rest of the head ?
it should not be all that hard to reduce the ammount of scalyness on the face.
the hard thing is those gills. they are impossible.
gahh I tried to model gills all day then I went and examined some fish.
found that my gills were backwards.
aggahh back to square one.

I like the first one more, the model looks very cute.
lol yeah I am trying to fight the cuteness factor as much as possible those lips and nose and facial expression lead you to the cute idea.
I should probibly tweak the mesh a bit to make it more uncute.
after all how many cute people have facial tattoos ?
Does anyone have a good way to make abs?
I have tried various methods and it seems very difficult to get the shape right.
does anyone have any ideas or thoughts about how to model them?
I have been working on a torso for this guy.
after many restarts my newness to torsos is still showing but this is what I have so far.
anyone want to help a poor C4D user figure out the torso a bit better? pleae crit this thing, the torso is giving me fits.
http://www.metafex.net/~j3/torso.jpg
An easy way I usually use is to take a box with 2 'X' segments and 3 'Y' and start inner extruding, extruding and beveling until I have a basic simple shape from wich I continue with dragging points.
some crit on your model would be the hard outer edges of the muscle, try softening the outer sides of the stomach muscles.
Meaby this editor screen is usefull for some reference...

HI. It looks like its heading in the right direction. I would try and remember the chest is what needs to be sticking out the most. The abbs-especially the top row look like they stick out almost as much as the chest muscles. In point mode you may want to just pull everything below the chest back a little. The view may be fooling me though.:)
no wilson you are right the abs are way to far foreward. Thanks for pointing it out.

here is a little update. anyone have anyother crits of my torso?

the ridge down the middle looks a little deep.
but it depends on size of rest of body and look youre going for.
nice work btw
