Title: Sprocket
Name: Nikhil Sharma
Country: India
Software: Maya, mental ray
Final render of a medium polygon sprocket in Maya using Mental Ray. I used default materials(Dgs_Material and Mia_Material_x) and placed a HDR Image map on it.
I have tried to achieve the reflection of a barred window on a smooth table with a shiny cog kept on it.

2 critiques for ya, there is too much edge bevel, gears tend to have a tighter edge on them, a lot of them are machined or milled so they have much finer edges, yours looks as if it was cast and the other one is try to remove some of the faceting, its very noticeable on the inner ring. If you did follow the gear tutorial, the faceting is because you did the edge bevel all the way around, the beveling should be localized to the teeth and outside edges, not the vertical edges.
The render is pretty snazzy, the blurred reflection looks very nice.

Thanks, guys, for your replies.
Firstly, joel3d, I did follow that tutorial, though not completely. I found the gear itself was well executed and explained, but the base and background remained lacking. So I experimented a bit until I got the effect I needed.
Secondly, Oddgit, I agree with you completely abouth the excessive edge bevel. I had tried reducing it earlier, but the render looked aliased. So I compromised sharpness for smoothness. In any case, I prefer the liquid metal feel, even if it deviates from reality. And you're completely right about the inner faceting, I'll keep it in mind the next time.
Looks like a desktop wallpaper for KDE.
Is it inspired by KDE in some way?
Put a big shiny 'K' in it and submit it to the KDE community, they'll love it.

Thanks, Dtox, for the comments.
Honestly, though, I had never heard of KDE before this day(just Googled for it). I've been a Windows guy all my life(not always proud of it, though) and I can't hide my ignorance about the other operating systems out there. Still, I like the look of the interface of K Desktop Environment for Unix 4.0. Maybe I'll give it a go, someday.
I only know it through Linux.
It's pretty good, you can make it Windows like or Mac like(my main OS is MacOSX).
It's best used on a secondary system though, IMO anyway.
Since most major applications (especially graphics apps) aren't ported for Linux or require a costly Linux version.
I'm a Slackware user and a couple years back Slack switched from Gnome to the K Desktop.
I wasn't happy about it at first, but it's grown on me since then.

Frankly speaking, I like the look of KDE far better than the idea of a different OS Envirounment. I love the Open Source Community and all that they're doing: I find they really bring out the best in interface design and graphical implementation, even if the technical edge of commercial products is lacking. But I've grown too cosy with XP to consider moving on to other pastures. Lack of software support is another problem, as you mentioned. I hope it is overcome soon, though.
