View Full Version : problems with Yafray
Spelljammer 05-08-2003, 02:45 AM I downloaded the latest yafray files and I see the yafray option in wings under render. But, when i use it, i shows everything with a very dark texture when i it renders. charcoal grey actually. What step am i missing? I played with all the options. any help would be appreciated

I'm going out on a limb here but I'm guessing you're missing lights.

When you setup lights, do you set them up in wings or in the rendering program? Does it matter? Is one way perfered over the other?
Again, I know nothing of rendering...once I knockout texturing though - that is my next phase in the learning evolution.

Depends on the program used to render. If it's just a renderer (Aqsis, 3Delight, POV-Ray, Yafray...) then creating the lights in Wings is the easiest way.
If you're using 'full package' (Max, Maya, LW, C4D, Blender...) software then it doesn't really matter.

I was using the spotlights. I switched to one infinite light and it renders nice now except no textures are showing. I heard that yafray can't use tga files, so i tried with just materials in wings and that is still black and white. At least it cast shadows though. I even looked at the xml file on a yafray export and i can't find the texture file even mentioned there
I was hoping to modify the xml and point to a jpg version of the tga file. What the heck am i doin wrong? I've seen yafray do color because i've seen the posts.

Any way you can post the scene file?
Might help in locating the problem...
Also,did you download both the latest binary release and the CVS update for yafray?
(Assuming you're on windows) The release notes for the latest wings said it needed both.
I've not gotten the latest wings and yafray installed in windows yet,
but they're working nicely under linux.
Only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to use my painted texture maps in yafray,
but then I haven't really been messing with that at all.

k, well, I got it to work now with materials. But I don't see a way to use painted textures with it. BTW, thanks for the help. It was the CVS update file. I had downloaded it and ran, thinking it was a self extracting executable. But now i see it is just the yafray executable that needs to be copied over to the yafray directory manually.
Let me know if you figure out how to use yafray with painted textures. I hear that it can only use jpg and not tga
Hi guy`s,
i was just browsing the contribution page over at Yafray and found that eeshlo seem`s to have added .tga support on 09/03/03.
you can read it hear:
http://www.coala.uniovi.es/~jandro/noname/about.php#contrib
but, i can`t find any more posts on the subject, except for the stuff on the
changelog page where esshlo use`s a
.tga for the "normal image backround"
you can read it here:
http://www.coala.uniovi.es/~jandro/noname/data/documentation/changelog20030309.txt
i`m also interested in finding out more about the use of the .tga`s in Yafray.
i`ll keep looking, and hope this helps someone:)

thanks, H@dj. I did find this on that second link you gave me.
New texture import syntax & targa texture import
----------------------------------------------------
The new syntax is more general which will allow other image formats to be added
without changes to the loader syntax;
example:
<texture type="image" name="walltex" >
<filename value="wall1.jpg" />
</texture>
The image formats supported at the moment are jpeg and targa (colormap not supported yet).
===============
sounds like I would have to modify an exported xml file to do this. I don't see why the Yafray pluggin doesn't do this? It cam out after March. Maybe the next version of Wings will do it. In the mean time, i'll experiment with modifying an xml export and see what happens
You need to turn on the modulator to get textures in the current
wings version. Mark create modulator in the material editor and then press ok. Bring up the material editor again for that material
and you will get access to the modulator, i.e. texture options.
This will be better in the next version, i.e. if the material has a
texture the modulator will be created by default. The yafray-plugin writer has promised this.

I'm still confused. I don't have a material to edit so that i can turn on the modulator. My model is fully textured using a tga file. Should I make the model a material and then use the modulator and tell it what file to use? And, can I use TGA or do I need to convert texture file to jpg for this?
