Well this is the first time I've done one of these online contests and I'm realy looking forward to it.

My initial thoughts regarding the challenge...
I'm intending to try and create a smaller in scope image, more achievable in the timescale. I have done some 3D modelling and texturing, but am hoping to use this mostly as a learning task. Therefore I don't want to aim so high I don't end up finishing. Equally, it's good to have a project to give me some direction here.

My plan is to brainstorm initially as many possible human-alien interactions as I can think of. After I've found some possibilities that I think sound interesting (without being some grand scale war scene that I couldn't possilby finnish) I'll thumbnail some quick sketches. Hopefully some of these sketches can be developed into a more cohesive image that I can then start in earnest.

Importantly I want to have fun and learn more at the same time.

Well I work in retail and know how sometimes it can be completely manic, and other times so boring you want to knaw your own leg off just for something different to do.
I'm liking the idea of a guy working in some shabby human food stall in a fantastic alien "mall".
But he sees it every day and is bored.

Modeled and rendered in XSI 6 Fnd.
Placeholder objects so far. Need to add much, much more. But I'm having fun.
Will be scribbling concepts for the aliens on breaks at work over the next few days.

The first human head I've modeled that I'm not absolutly terrified to show. I know it's not perfect by a long shot, but I get better (very slightly) each time.

I'll probably take it into ZBrush later.

Moddelled in Silo.

edit..
Does anyone have any tips for poly-moddelling eye-lids? I can never do them, so any help would be gratefully recieved.

Modeled in Silo, sculpted in Zbrush.
An alien to be walking by.

Starting to put in some other models and textures. Not going to be anywhere near what I had hoped when I began, but I've enjoyed taking part.

Added another couple of objects and adjusted lighting slightly.

Aaargh, why does UV mapping not seem to behave as I want it to?

Bleedin' Silo to XSI then through Roadkill, to ZBrush, back to XSI. It should be so easy, but I don't know which step it's going wrong.

great idea and the modelling is good, altough you should concentrate to add more detail to the objects in the scene, also improve the lighting
good luck

Hi,

Firstly thanks for your interest. It's appreciated.

I absolutly agree with all that you have said, unfortunatly I am just running out of time (as I think we all are).
I am going to add as much to it as I can, but It will still be a long way from what I wanted.

Oh well, it has been fun taking part. And it's forced me to learn some more, so I've benifited from taking part.

Still working on this. Tried to make the lighting a little more intersting.

Still need to do more on the textures.

Well it's my final image. I'd have like to have gotten further than I did, but I'm not completly dissapointed with it.

I know I have a very long way to go to get to the level of some of the competetors here, but I'll try.

Best of luck to everybody.
