Venus gets drunk after a night out with Adonis and crash lands in a fishermen's cove. She is fished out by a bunch of fishermen. This is a quick sketch to put my thoughts on paper. I intend to finish this one quickly for I don't have a lot of time. :D

I darkened the mock up a bit so the characters are bit more visible. I also shifted the kneeling character more to the right out of the middle . I'll see how I feel about this placement tomorrow.

Interesting idea! It certainly beats the same old tired cliche of space aliens in spacey-alieny paraphernalia!

Golden ratio and everything! Love it.

I have been working on the design of the composition. I am pretty much happy so far, with the rough placement of the main elements. It gives me an idea of what I will be aspiring to achieve in the final picture. Of course nothing is written in stone and I may vary a thing or two along the way.

My next step is to start working on the characters in the picture starting with the main character, venus herself.

After glancing at the forum I saw your entry and was curious, so I clicked. It's a very interesting take on the subject, and I love the ratio aspects you put in. I also just wanted to say thanks, since seeing your thoughts made me reconsider my base concepts for this. I knew they were cliche, but this sort of magnified it a hundred fold. So aye, thanks for bumping me off the monorail of thought, good luck with things!

Hey Ego, really interesting approach to the concept :). Nice studie on the composition. perhaps yo have two really strong points of interest and I feel that are dividing yor image in two sections, the venus and the fishers ( the eyes of the viewer jumps for one section to another without a guidance) . Maybe you need to move the right fishers grup more closer to the venus and a bit to the center, only a comment :) Again, nice work and lloking forward for more updates. Cheers mate!!

I have changed the characters in my story a bit.

This is the story, behind my painting painting:

"Millions of years ago, powerful beings from far away galaxies, walked amidst the people of the earth. They possessed extra ordinary powers, beauty beyond measure, technological advancement surpassing any known in the history of the world, and a keen interest in the spiritual empowerment of the inhabitants of earth. The humans, in return for the generosity of these beings, worshipped them as gods.

It soon came to be known in all the galaxies that earth was under the protection of these gods. Many many years passed and humans have not reached the spiritual awakening hoped for by their patron gods. Their stubbornness, greed and ill will towards one another caused much pain and displeasure among their protectors who finally decided to leave the earth. It has been millenia since the last patron god left the earth. Humans no longer enjoyed the alliance and protection of their patron gods and there has been countless wars, famine, and oppression from other races.

Venus, the bringer of joy, one of the original patron gods of earth, has landed on a small village to see for herself whether there was a slight chance that humanity was worth taking under her wings. Venus in my picture will bring much wealth, and beauty. The picture will just examine the reaction of the first humans who came in contact with her upon her arrival.

Ego, I like how you are staying away from archetype scaly alien angle. I would challenge you, beyond your description, to look at how a casual viewer will know that's Venus (and an alien), not just a hot naked chick on the beach. I think you can pull it off.

Hey Ego, really poetic bacground for your story :) I like the changes on your idea, and the new composition works really nice. Maybe you can play in the Venus design with some mix of mythological and outearth technological elements :D Only a comment. Nice work! Cheers mate!

In researching my character, I have looked at the old masters, and how they handled paintings of venus for hundreds of years. I also have my own personal references and a couple of stock references.

@Velk, I am glad you subscribed to my thread. I really hope I can finish this.
I thought I had more time.

I really do not subscribe to the theory that all alien life form is ugly, malformed and did I say ugly?
I chose to believe that this particular alien is beautiful, even more so than humans.
I am hoping that her traditional mode of transport, which is a shell, her mascot, the flying fish (which by the way is symbolic) will set her apart as a non human and not a naked chick on the beach. And about the nake part, I am still trying to make a decision about whether to paint he naked or with fabric on her.

@Felk, thanks again. Your words of encouragement mean a lot. I hope I don't panic and reduce the composition to just one figure, just so I can finish on time. :D
From tomorrow, I will be on a mad schedule to finish this.

Cool idea! I'm also thinking Venus could have some tech stuff on her to mark her out as an alien. Especially the shell could look hi-tech. In your first composition you had a swirling motion with the characters leading the eye around in a really nice way, try not to loose that. Especially the guy on the left of Venus was important, maybe put him back? (One more guy to paint! Arrgh!) Anyway, nice work!

Tagger, thanks. I promise I will keep working on it until the fat lady sings in a few days.

Minnhagen, thank you. I get scared thinking of all the characters that can make this work, but this is the kind of challenge I like. I will keep developing all of them and play around with my final compositing to see what works the best. i will definitely keep in mind your suggestion to watch out for that design. I actually love painting guys because I have a ready model at home who does not mind (read manly grumble) posing for me .

Ok, lots of updates ahead. Back to the wacom.

I am investigating giving venus a slightly more direct look at her hosts rather than the eyes closed look. I started thinking that the eyes lowered look gave her too much of a haughty demeanor, which may not be translated as friendly.

Venus face study 2. I have to now decide which version to go with so I can go forth and paint this stuff already. :)
