Working up a tighter sketch - the server bots are serving starters; the guests are struggling with the cutlery and human etiquette. The neo chimp and gorilla wish they were back in the trees...

Closeup shot - underpainting detail - maybe I have bitten off more than I can chew... still a way to go.
The server bot now has wrists and ankles to stand on!
The human is beginning to look like that guy in that film who had no hand and a chainsaw? Maybe not.

Some nice solid drawing and character designs there!

I think the busyness works for this composition. Maybe you could have cut the depth with a wall or something though?

One thing I noticed... although I don't know if it is a problem... but a lot of the characters are facing square on to the table... if you see what I mean. I think some of them could be rotated a bit or be twisting their heads a little. Difficult to describe... hope that makes sense.

RupertD
04-03-2008, 01:37 PM
joana and Andy--Jones: Thanks a lot, I'm pushing on and luckily I still have plenty of time.

John Keates - Thanks for the advice - I think the busyness will recede somewhat after I put the colour in. I'm planning a hazy, subtle, golden-yellowy sunset in the background.
Square on characters - Originally I was thinking of quite a formal table setting so it doesn't bother me really that they are all staring forwards.
Maybe its the awkwardness of the situation that is making them stiff, combined with the lousy speech the Earth Commander is giving? :)

RupertD
04-08-2008, 07:55 AM
Me too, I would love to start the colour now but I've got to put in a little more effort on the underpainting.
Its killing me but hopefully it will be worth it.
I think my mistake was drawing it out on A3 paper and scanning in at 300dpi, then painting straight onto that.
The size is way too big.
Secondly I should have reconfigured the painting to have 1 main figure and a couple of secondary ones.
Instead I have a lot of stuff happening and a lot of work to do.
At least I can say it is epic in scale...

hello rupert this a very nice thread!
i have only one crit i think your sketches are simply fantastic theres so much energy in it and i feel u loose that energy in the latest version ..if i can do a suggestion u sholuld bring nonsense in the lines ..less straight logic lines in perspective but keep this crazy dynamism u have in your sketches ..there 's an old school belgian comic drawer called "Franquin " he was a master to keep energy like ur sketches and come with a final render in the line...i know is easy to say and i also know that is maybe one of the most hardest things to do...anyway good luck rupert!

I like your style, keep it up

RupertD
04-12-2008, 12:46 PM
kukart: Many thanks.

harachte: Thank you, when I started the piece my idea was to draw a final line-drawing from a rough sketch and then stick to it rigidly. In the past I have tended to meander, pushing paint around endlessly, with no firm guidelines. I thought it best to do it this way for this highly detailed image. Anyway I got lazy at the end and didn't finish the linework perfectly.
I see what you mean about the bottom of the picture - will adds some more at the bottom if I have time.

Jassar: Thank you.

Jaba153: Thanks for the great advice - I had a look at some of Franquin's stuff and I see what you mean - absolutely agree with you the drawing is feeling quite stiff. Whether I can do something about it at this late stage is another question... I am hoping to give it that energy again when I paint in the colour...

CartoonBox: Thanks for the support.

asparta, Pearlyking, Huggy; Thanks a lot guys your support is much appreciated!

chandro: Thanks a lot and yes you are right there is a classic look here, don't know how that crept in.
Could be the greyscale underpainting technique, although I'm now getting historical 'Last supper' cues.
I think it is in the pose of the human character. Maybe I'll change that. heh heh

one thing. no one is gonna be smoking?

RupertD
04-16-2008, 06:29 PM
Thanks chilombiano; I hadn't thought of a smoking character but I think that's a great idea - the chimp is a prime candidate to have a cigarette, maybe even a pipe. Also considering putting in some vapour trails in the sky from smaller unseen ships. Hell why not, more is more.

04-16-2008, 06:44 PM
Hey man,
The colors are vibrant and work really well with all the little details you put into the scene. I think chilombiano has a point. A high-class dinner has to have a smoker or two.....and maybe you can give a monocle to the ape or the monkey. As for the seats i think a bit of texture to suggest there's foam or something comfortable to sit on would be nice cuz if u leave it like that they would look like extended toilet seats........not too high on the comfort scale imo. just my 2 cents.

Good luck though i doubt you'll need it

This is looking nice so far. You have really fanciful, interesting aliens in a greeat setting. And you have a whole lot of bright vibrant colors, everywhere. There's little break anywhere from the colors, and every single part of the canvas is equally intense, all fighting for the eye's attention. It makes it hard for the eyes to rest anywhere, or help from being pulled somewhere else. One thing that could help your composition is to vary the values and saturation levels more: The table is obviously the main focal point so what if it were the most intensely colored thing on the page and other less important areas (like the sky) were less saturated and trying to grab your attention less? Or if you focused on having more warm hues in the foreground and cooler colors in the background? Or vise versa, to provide some warm/cool contrast between front and back?

Anyhow, just some ideas. Great work so far, and terrific details!

HornlessUnicorn - Thanks a lot for the support. Still slaving away here. heh heh

Walrus - Thanks for the great advice. I agree with your sentiments exactly, which was why I was calling it a fruit salad a while ago. I have toned down the background quite substantially and desaturated a couple of foreground elements. I definitely think its better now.

Azagthoth - Thanks a lot. The chef is the lion character who used to sit next to the gorilla, but was needed in the kitchen as the uplifted warthogs needed supervision! Maybe he had to have a bite of one? (You can see him in some of the earlier pics)

harachte - Thanks and thanks for the advice - I think I have basically done just that - toned the background down and kept the foreground quite vibrant. Although it definitely seems to be more vibrant in photoshop as opposed to on the web?

Hey there from Jo'burg (not for long..)

I like your work with the nice technique and intricate details.
Some real digital skills there imho
Only thing is the one comment that figures look rigid looking forward,
and there really doesn't seem to be a lot happening in terms of actual movement.

But it somewhat makes up with all the details and nice characters you created.
I particularly like the tiny "table people" and can't possibly figure what they're up to..
Nice colours (triad?) good going for sure :buttrock:

nwiz25 - Hey thanks a lot for the support and the great colorblender tip - since then I think I have made some progress in nailing down the colours?

sasquatch70 - Thanks a lot Brad - wish I had made it a little simpler though. To separate all the different elements I have resorted to putting black lines around everything; probably a fatal mistake but its too late now...heh heh.

Spin99 - Hey Spin99 from Joburg, nice to see some local guys here. Thanks for the support. Yes I agree the figures are a bit stiff but I think I can get away with that as its quite a formal setting. Colours were supposed to be a base charcoal grey with red and yellow and gold accents but they went a bit wild!?

I have decided to go back to the original background - a starscape. The sunset was making the composition way too wild... The eye now has an area of calm to rest in, and the composition has a focal point, the table.

Heres a closeup of the human character. I still would like to fix him up a bit. The red fur on the chairs is driving me crazy as its looks quite lame. In general the image is far too tight but its a lesson well learnt...

Hey Rupert,

Fur looks fine. New background the resting place you were talking about.
Also been a learning curve for me. Colours always go wild?
And so much for being local, it looks like I'm packing to the beach past the border again.
Wonder where I'll go after that

Cheerio.

I have been fiddling around with the background like a dog gnawing on a bone- trying to make it recede, and trying to loosen up the brushwork. I took some elements out too as I'm running out of time and they didn't add much. (meaning I'm sick of the picture now) heh heh

hi,

I like what I see here. But you still have to play around with those vibrant colours
to guide the viewers eye.
The toned down version was the best thus far imo.

Busy subduing the colour; I've changed the tablecloth colour too. I've calmed the chairs down, and thrown out the red fur once more! Hope I don't see it again. I need to put back some highlight on the chairs though.

The heads of the ancient alien races have finally arrived in earth orbit, having travelled for months at faster than light speed to attend this the first summit on alien relations. That evening, after the first round of turbulent talks, the supreme commander of the earth races invites his new found friends to a sumptuous banquet. Only the finest delicacies from a thousand light years away will be served.

He turns to his trusted uplifted advisors: "I want you all on your best behaviour - first impressions are everything. That means no swinging on the chairs, and try to keep the screeching down. Our friends have come a long way to see us."

Unfortunately things do not go quite as well as planned...

The guests struggle to understand the earthly cutlery and to most of them, manners are 'alien'.

The carving bot has mistaken the Grand Emissary of Wirrrvthhtrr as a piece of rolled roast beef and proceeds menacingly.

The pesky little steel men from Fruuuth are running all over the place and destroying the ambiance.

The jelly lightfish pudding is feeling depressed at the thought of being eaten, and Huuuze the four legged flautist is tormenting everybody with his dreadful harmonies and foot tapping.

And unfortunately Dolph the Neo dolphin can't sit, so instead he hangs excitedly around the table chattering and whistling. The Neo primates are wondering whether it would not have been better to remain in the trees...

Other than that it is the perfect dinner party.

Thanks to everyone for all the support in finishing (and starting) this painting. Enjoy.

Rupert

MartinNielsen, Paul4wood, GaeasHerald, chilombiano, nwiz25 Thanks guys you are way, way too kind!

I had a great time painting this (and I am still tweaking here and there)
I made quite a few basic mistakes - my main mistake was starting to paint at the final hi res and not upsizing as I went along. Wow that was dumb...

Next I didn't bother to do any small colour studies before I leapt into the colour so it got way out of hand and I had to fight to get it back under control (I think) :banghead:

And I painted it on two layers, foreground and background, and used masks to separate the areas so when I changed the position of any element I had a mismatching mask... :p

So my next one will be small and painterly! Heh heh

Thanks again and good luck. ;)

Huh, I thought I had posted since you made the sweeping background changes but I guess I didn't. Congratulations on finishing this piece. It came out terrific! I really like everything with the darker sky, as it really focuses the attention on the characters well. And the characters - and all of the details on the table - look wonderful. The aliens, the earth-creatures, the food... and I especially love the little mini-jug-shaped robot in the front. Nice work!

As for judging times, don't hold your breath. It always takes a long time - there are a LOT of entries, a lot of good entries - and only 2 big awards - and in this case the video competition is still going on for another month. I think we have a long while to wait! :)

RupertD
05-16-2008, 06:39 AM
Hey Walrus thanks for stopping by and thanks for the compliments!

I had a big battle with the colour which in retrospect could have been averted by a simple couple of colour roughs in the beginning, but you have to learn sometime :banghead: . I still think the colour could be more subtle but I think I just gave up and got too tired of looking at the same thing so often.

I think ultimately I'm happy with the way it turned out, the only thing I don't like is the style of paint application - if you zoom into the details its not a pretty sight  . But I think in future with use of the smudge tool and perhaps using painter, I could get more life into the painting style.

I had a look at your Walrus Droppings blog - (awesome stuff, your Dominance War guy is a winner  ) I really enjoyed your working process. One question - once you have gone through your process do you flatten the image and then paint in the final details? Or do you paint the final small detail changes back into each layer?

Its a nice smooth workflow that reminds me of how a neo-classical painter would approach a work.

Anyway thanks and best of luck,
