Latest Update: Work In Progress: Test Render 1 (alien + backdrop)

I have always loved the work that comes out of these competitions and when I saw the topic for this I thought I would give it a go. I am pretty busy with my final year of Uni but hopefully I will be able to submit something half way decent.
My idea at the moment is having two characters, a female alien and a male human. the man is standing in front of the woman with his head turned away with a look of sadness on his face.
the woman is looking at the man in sympathy and has a hand resting on his shoulder.
I am a seriously crappy drawer but i will try to come up with some concept work soon

So I thought i would build on the original inter-species brothership theme and change my concept so that it has two main characters. The human character is dead from some kind of bullet wound to the chest and the other one a kind of typical tall gaunt alien type will be carrying him shedding a single tear.
I thought I would call the piece, 'Compassion, remorse and other alien emotions'

6th time the charm? Having trouble uploading so lets see if this works.
this is how i want to lay out my image.
basically the big alien is carrying the dead human and having a teary

this is a sketch of how I want my alien to look. He should look proud but humbled in the final outcome. I want to give him some animal features so to keep in theme a bit with the uplift story and in this case I think some dog-like features will help to convey the proud but sad/humbled emotion

so I finally after 6 or so tries to upload my concept stuff. The drawings are a bit poor but drawing isn't one of my strong points.
But now that thats out of the way I can get into the fun stuff 3D YAY!!!
I have started work but havent really got much done yet. I have so far been testing how I can render some of the liquid in the scene realistically as I haven't really done that before. I have set up a quick scene with a drip of blood running down an arm. If it turns out any good I'll post if not the next post will probably be with the base meshes

this is my alien so far. needs some tweeking and then I plan to make it super awesome in Zbrush the most awesomest program on earth. It kind of resembles the sketch so thats a plus. still need to make the UV's which is always fun :(
if anyone wants to tell me how to output displacement maps from Zbrush it would be greatly appreciated all i can get is normal and cavity maps?

This is a quick test I did to see how I could go about detailing my alien character. I used the body from the generic soldier that comes with zbrush. I have since made my own.

This is another zbrush test this time with the body I made. I have finished modelling the aliens accessories in lightwave and I will probably try to detail them in zbrush too

Just a test render for my alien and the background. I don't like the cliff so i'll probably redo it. I still have to model my human and detail everything in Zbrush and then hopefully I'll be gettin something that looks ok
